Before installing beta software on a Samsung Galaxy phone, make a computer backup with Samsung Smart Switch PC. Samsung specifically recommends this because unexpected beta behavior can cause data loss. Keep that backup available: if you later roll back, the process resets the phone and removes data generated during beta testing.
Back up your Galaxy to a computer with Smart Switch
Samsung’s One UI Beta Program guidance recommends backing up to a computer with Smart Switch before installing beta software. The precise menus and available backup categories can vary by phone, operating system, software version, and connection option, so follow the instructions displayed for your device.

- Update your installed apps. Samsung’s beta guidance advises updating apps before you install the beta. Also check the instructions for the beta program and your specific Galaxy model, since eligibility and steps vary by device and region. Samsung’s One UI Beta Program guidance
- Prepare Smart Switch on a computer. Install and open Samsung Smart Switch PC on the computer you will use for the backup. Use a USB cable that fits both your phone and computer and supports data transfer.
- Connect the phone. Connect the Galaxy to the computer by USB, unlock the phone if prompted, and respond to any connection or permission prompts on its screen.
- Start the backup. In Smart Switch on the computer, select Backup and follow the on-screen instructions. Samsung says the data categories available to transfer can vary with the phone’s OS, software version, and connection option; do not assume every app or data type is included. - Verify completion. Wait until Smart Switch reports that the backup is complete. If the app shows an error or does not confirm completion, address that before installing the beta rather than treating the attempt as a usable backup.
- Keep the backup accessible. Leave the computer and backup available while testing the beta and until you are comfortable proceeding without a rollback. If you return to the previous release, Samsung’s rollback process resets the phone and removes data created during beta testing; Samsung says a computer backup can be restored afterward. Can Samsung Cloud or Google backup be used too?
Yes. Samsung documents Samsung Cloud and Google backup as additional ways to back up supported Galaxy data. They can provide extra copies, but they are not a substitute for the computer backup Samsung specifically recommends before installing beta software. Coverage, settings, account access, and available storage differ, and no single method is guaranteed to include every category on every device.

- Samsung Cloud: Review the backup options available on your device and confirm that the relevant data is selected and backed up to your Samsung account. Samsung Cloud backup guidance
- Google backup: Review your Google account backup settings on the phone and make sure the account is accessible. Google backup is another path for supported data, not a promise that all app or phone data will be captured. Google’s Android backup guidance
Which backup should you rely on?

These methods do not necessarily preserve identical data. Check the options and status shown on your own phone rather than assuming one backup covers everything. Samsung’s beta availability and instructions vary by device, OS version, and country; confirm the current requirements for the beta you plan to install.
