Before resetting your Samsung Galaxy, make a fresh backup and verify that it completed and is saved to an account or destination you can access. Samsung Cloud, Google backup, Smart Switch, and copying files to a microSD card cover different kinds of data; none should be assumed to preserve everything. Menu names and available services vary by phone and country, so check the options shown on your device.
Choose a backup route for the data you need
Use a cloud backup for supported device data, Smart Switch for a local backup to a computer or SD card, and manual copying when you mainly need selected files such as photos or documents. Combining routes can provide an extra copy of important files, but a folder copied to a card is not a complete phone backup.

| Route | Destination and requirements | What it covers and how restoration works |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Cloud | Cloud account and internet; availability and categories depend on device and country. | Select data categories and back them up through Samsung Cloud. Samsung documents restoring through Settings > Accounts and backup > Restore data. |
| Google backup | Google account and internet; available categories depend on phone and Android version. | Samsung lists photos, videos, apps and app data, contacts, call history, MMS messages, and device settings. Restore from the last available backup during initial setup after the reset. |
| Smart Switch | Local destination: a computer or SD card, depending on the available setup. | Creates a Smart Switch backup that can be restored to a phone; Samsung’s guide does not promise that every item or app state is included. |
| Manual file copy | Compatible microSD card; Samsung describes copying with My Files without internet. | Copy selected pictures, videos, music, and documents. This does not automatically save apps, settings, or other phone data. |
Samsung also describes OneDrive as a way to synchronize data on Galaxy devices. That is synchronization for applicable content, not an established complete device backup for factory-reset recovery; check which items are actually syncing. See Samsung’s [OneDrive and Galaxy synchronization guidance].
Back up with Samsung Cloud
Samsung Canada documents this path; labels or availability may differ in other regions and on other models. Its guidance also says individual files larger than 1 GB will not upload through the described Samsung Cloud process.

Samsung says automatic backup can run once every 24 hours when the phone is charging, connected to Wi-Fi, and has had its screen off for at least an hour. It will not run automatically if cloud storage is full, so do not treat an older automatic backup as proof that today’s data is saved. Samsung Cloud may not be available on every Galaxy device or in every country. See Samsung Canada’s backup and restore instructions.
Back up with Google
Samsung Canada’s documented path is through the Google Drive backup controls. Sign in to the Google account you intend to use for recovery.

Samsung’s Google One guidance lists photos, videos, apps and app data, contacts, call history, MMS messages, and device settings among the backed-up categories. Categories and restoration results can vary by Galaxy phone and Android version; a backup from a newer phone version cannot be restored to an earlier one. Samsung places restore during initial setup after a reset, so choose the available backup while setting up the phone rather than assuming it can be fully restored later from within setup. See Samsung’s Google account backup and restore guidance.
Make a local backup with Smart Switch
Smart Switch can save a phone backup to a computer or SD card and restore saved data to a phone. It is a useful local copy when you do not want your only backup in the cloud, but Samsung’s guide does not establish it as a bit-for-bit image or guarantee that every app state and item is included.

Copy selected files to a microSD card
On compatible Galaxy phones, Samsung Canada says you can use a microSD card without internet and copy files with the My Files app. This route is appropriate for selected items such as pictures, videos, music, and documents, not for preserving the phone’s complete apps-and-settings state.
- Insert a compatible microSD card into the phone.
- Open My Files and locate the files or folders you want to keep.
- Use the app’s copy or move controls to save them to the card, then check the card to confirm the files are present.
Card support depends on the phone model. Samsung’s microSD instructions are included in its Galaxy backup and restore guide.

Verify the backup before you reset
- Confirm that the latest backup finished; do not rely on a remembered backup date or an automatic backup that may not have run.
- Check that you can sign in to the Samsung or Google account holding a cloud backup, or access the computer or card used for a local copy.
- For manually copied files, open the destination and confirm that the important files are there.
- Check the backup categories and available storage on the phone. A backup route may omit content you expect, and Samsung Cloud’s Canada guidance excludes individual files over 1 GB.
- For Google restoration, be prepared to select the available backup during initial phone setup after the reset.
