Then check Google Photos separately for “Backup complete” and confirm that any critical app has its own backup or sync in place. These steps reduce data-loss risk, but they cannot guarantee that every app’s private data will be recoverable.
Back up your Pixel’s Google Account data
- Connect the phone to a reliable network and make sure it has enough charge for the backup and update. These are practical precautions, not stated Pixel-specific requirements for installing an update.
- Open Settings > Google services > Backup. Menu labels can vary by Pixel model and Android version.
- Review Backup details to see the categories covered. If you want to start a fresh backup, tap Back up now. Google’s Android backup instructions describe this manual option.
- Return to the Backup page and check the current backup information rather than treating the tap as confirmation that everything has finished. Google says the process can take up to 24 hours to complete fully.
Google lists apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS among the data that can be backed up to a Google Account. RCS messages are included when you use Google Messages; call settings and blocked numbers are included when you use Phone by Google. Coverage depends on the app and service: Google cautions that “Not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data.”

Verify photos and videos in Google Photos
- Open Google Photos and check the backup status at the top of the library. Wait until it says “Backup complete” before moving on.
- Review which device folders are selected for backup if photos or videos in screenshots, downloads, or messaging-app folders matter to you.

Check account storage and app-specific data
Google publishes 15 GB of storage at no charge for a Google Account; this is Google’s stated allowance on its Android Help page, accessed in 2026, and may change. Google Photos, Google Drive, and Gmail share that account storage, so review available space before relying on cloud backup. Google says additional storage is available through Google One.

For high-value data in banking, authenticator, messaging, notes, or other apps, open each app and check its own backup, export, or account-sync settings. Do not assume that the Android device backup includes private app data or credentials; the app’s own instructions determine what can be restored.
Optional: make a separate copy of files on a computer
A USB copy is an extra option, not a prerequisite for the Google Account backup. If you want another copy, connect the Pixel to a computer with a data-capable cable, unlock the phone, select file transfer when prompted, and copy the files you want. Check the copied files on the computer afterward. Google documents the process in its Android USB file-transfer guide; the computer needs available disk space and a compatible port.

When the checks are done
Once the backup information is current, Photos reports completion, and any important app-specific data has been checked, proceed with the Android update. The backup guidance describes recovery and transfer options; it does not say that a routine Android update requires a factory reset or normally erases user data.
