For selected Windows or Mac folders, use UGREEN’s desktop client to create a Backup this computer task. For a Mac backup history that can include files, applications, and settings, configure a dedicated Time Machine share on the NAS and connect to it from macOS. These are different workflows: file sync is not a substitute for backup, and a copy on the NAS does not protect against loss of the NAS itself.
The right choice depends on what you want to restore. A folder task is useful for protecting chosen files on either platform; Time Machine is the history-oriented option UGREEN describes for a Mac. Whichever you use, make sure the computer can stay connected through the backup, leave enough room at the destination, and test a restore before relying on the copy.

Choose the backup method that matches what you need
UGREEN documents two ways to copy computer data to a NAS. The desktop-client workflow backs up selected folders from Windows or macOS. Time Machine over SMB is the Mac option for maintaining backup history. Choose based on the recovery you need, not simply on which setup has fewer steps.
| What you need | UGREEN desktop-client backup | Time Machine over SMB |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Selected folders on a Windows PC or Mac | Mac backup history for files, applications, and settings |
| Setup | Install UGREEN’s desktop client and create a Sync & Backup task | Enable SMB and Bonjour, designate a Time Machine share, then select it in macOS |
| Deleted and overwritten files | UGREEN says source-deleted files remain, but overwritten-file history is not provided | Time Machine is UGREEN’s history-oriented Mac option |
| Capacity management | Choose a NAS destination with enough available space | Use a dedicated shared folder and set a capacity quota |
| Computer compatibility | UGREEN documents the client for Windows and macOS | Mac only; the cited guide specifies UGOS Pro 1.9.0.0035 or later and macOS Monterey 12 or later |
| Important operating condition | Keep the computer awake, connected, and the client open while the task runs | Configure service discovery and a dedicated destination; protect the encryption password if encryption is enabled |
UGREEN distinguishes backup from sync: “Sync this computer” keeps files consistent across devices, while “Backup this computer” creates a recoverable copy of selected folders. Sync can propagate changes and should not be treated as an independent backup. In practical terms, use a backup task when the goal is to keep a copy for recovery, rather than to make the same current files appear on multiple devices. See UGREEN’s guide to syncing files between a UGREEN NAS and a computer and its computer backup guide.

Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
The workflows also differ in scope. A desktop-client task lets you select folders, which can be a good fit when you know which files matter or want a Windows option. Time Machine is the Mac route described for a broader history that includes files, applications, and settings. The folder task’s behavior is more limited: UGREEN says deleted source files remain, but overwritten-file history is not provided. If you need to go back to earlier versions of Mac files, do not assume a folder task provides that history; configure Time Machine instead.
Back up selected PC or Mac folders with the desktop client
This approach is useful when you want to protect specific folders—such as documents, photos, financial records, creative work, or local data that would be difficult to download again—without setting up Mac-wide Time Machine history. UGREEN documents the client for Windows and macOS. It is a selected-folder workflow, so first decide what you actually need to recover after a computer problem. Personal records, original work, and local files that are not readily replaceable are stronger candidates than data you can easily retrieve elsewhere.
Think about the destination before starting. UGREEN recommends a distinct NAS folder for each computer, which helps keep different machines’ copies identifiable and simpler to manage. A personal or shared folder can serve as the destination, provided the account used for the task has permission to write there. Choose a folder with enough available space for the data you select, and avoid using a destination that another account cannot access when it is time to restore files.
Set up the computer backup task
- Download the desktop client for your platform from UGREEN’s app-download page. Sign in to your NAS account.
- In the NAS interface, open Sync & Backup > Back up & Restore, select Add, then choose Backup this computer.
- Select the folders on the computer that you want the task to protect. Prefer data that matters and cannot readily be replaced; avoid selecting folders merely because they exist.
- Choose a personal or shared NAS folder as the destination. The account used by the task needs write permission, and the NAS destination needs enough free space for the selected data.
- Review the selected folders and destination before starting so the task points to the intended computer data and NAS location.
- Start the task. Keep the computer awake and connected to the network, and leave the desktop client open while it runs. Sleep, shutdown, network loss, or closing the client interrupts the backup.
UGREEN recommends a distinct destination folder for each computer. That makes it easier to identify which machine a copy came from and to manage recovery. This is especially useful if more than one PC or Mac backs up to the same NAS: a clear folder name reduces the chance of confusing one computer’s files with another’s later.
For a large first transfer, use wired Ethernet if practical. UGREEN describes roughly 110 MB/s as a practical estimate under favorable 1GbE file-transfer conditions, not an independent benchmark. It is not a promised speed for every NAS, computer, or network. Wi-Fi, small files, sleep, and other network activity can reduce actual transfer rates. The first copy may take longer when a large amount of data is selected or when conditions are less favorable, so plan to leave the computer available until the task has run. Details are in UGREEN’s backup guide and its NAS backup strategy guide.
Understand what this task can restore
UGREEN says this workflow retains files deleted from the source computer, but it does not provide version history for files that were overwritten. Those are distinct cases: if you delete a source file, UGREEN says its copy remains in the backup; if you modify and overwrite a file, this workflow does not give you a documented earlier version to roll back to. Do not assume that an earlier revision can be recovered after a file changes, and do not describe this task as versioned or immutable backup.
This distinction matters when choosing what to protect. If your main concern is keeping a copy of selected folders, the desktop-client task may fit. If your concern is recovering earlier versions of files on a Mac, UGREEN points to Time Machine as its history-oriented option. For a Windows PC, the sources reviewed document the folder backup workflow; they do not establish a Windows equivalent to Time Machine or a specific version-history feature in the desktop task.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the task stops before completion, check the basics supported by UGREEN’s instructions: the computer must remain awake and connected, the desktop client must stay open, the NAS must be reachable, and the task account must be able to write to the chosen destination. A completed status is useful, but it is not a substitute for checking that the files you care about can actually be opened after a restore.
Use Time Machine to back up a Mac to the NAS
UGREEN’s documented procedure uses Time Machine over SMB. The cited guide says it supports UGOS Pro firmware 1.9.0.0035 or later and macOS Monterey 12 or later. Firmware and macOS menus can change, so check the current requirements for your NAS model and macOS release if those labels or options differ. Do not assume that a menu in an older guide has the same name in every current software release. UGREEN’s setup instructions are in Connect UGREEN NAS to Mac: Finder and Time Machine Setup.

Time Machine and the desktop-client task are not interchangeable setup paths. The NAS needs SMB enabled, Bonjour enabled for discovery, and a shared folder designated as the Time Machine destination before you select it on the Mac. A share that you can browse from Finder is not necessarily configured as a Time Machine destination. Keep this workflow Mac-specific, and verify current requirements if your NAS firmware or macOS version falls outside the versions named in UGREEN’s guide.
Prepare a dedicated Time Machine destination in UGOS Pro
- Create a dedicated shared folder for Time Machine. Keeping it separate makes its capacity and contents easier to manage and avoids mixing the backup destination with ordinary shared files.
- Open Control Panel > File Service > SMB and enable SMB.
- In the SMB advanced settings, enable Bonjour so the Mac can discover the Time Machine destination.
- Designate the new shared folder as the Time Machine folder. Creating a shared folder alone is not enough; it must be designated for this purpose in UGOS Pro.
- Set a capacity quota for the folder and check that the NAS has adequate free space. The quota gives the Time Machine share a defined capacity limit, while available NAS space indicates whether the destination can accommodate the backup.
- Use UGREEN’s sizing suggestion as a starting point: its guide recommends a destination at least twice the Mac’s storage capacity to allow more history. This is a recommendation, not a guarantee of how long backups will be retained. Actual retention depends on available capacity and how quickly the Mac’s data changes.
For example, if a Mac has a particular storage capacity, UGREEN’s rule of thumb is to plan for a Time Machine destination at least twice that capacity. It does not mean you will retain a fixed number of days, months, or backup points. A Mac with more changing data will use space differently from one with less change, and the quota and free space still constrain the destination. Treat the figure as a planning baseline, not a retention promise.
Select the NAS in macOS
- On the Mac, open System Settings > General > Time Machine.
- Select Add Backup Disk, then choose the NAS destination.
- Enter NAS credentials if macOS asks for them. Use an account that can access the designated share.
- Consider enabling Time Machine encryption. UGREEN says the Mac encrypts the network backup before it is stored on the NAS. Keep the encryption password somewhere secure: losing it can make the backup unrecoverable.
- Allow the first backup to complete. UGREEN describes it as a full copy; later backups contain changed data.
- For the first transfer, use Ethernet if practical. Wi-Fi performance varies with distance, interference, router capability, and the Mac’s wireless connection. The wired connection is a practical choice for a large initial copy, not a requirement stated for every backup.
Before leaving the Mac to back up, make sure the NAS is available on the local network, the chosen share has enough quota and free space, and you have retained any encryption password. The first backup and later changed-data backups have different data volumes, but actual completion time depends on the data and connection. UGREEN’s approximately 110 MB/s estimate applies to favorable 1GbE file-transfer conditions; it should not be treated as a Time Machine speed guarantee or as a tested result for your setup.
Troubleshoot when Time Machine cannot find the NAS
Being able to open the NAS in Finder does not by itself mean Time Machine’s service discovery and destination configuration are complete. If the NAS does not appear as a backup disk, work through the setup in order rather than assuming the network share alone is sufficient:
- SMB: Confirm that SMB is enabled in UGOS Pro. Time Machine’s documented UGREEN setup uses SMB.
- Bonjour: Check the SMB advanced settings and confirm Bonjour is enabled. UGREEN includes Bonjour as part of discovery for the Mac.
- Time Machine designation: Make sure a shared folder has actually been designated as the Time Machine folder. An ordinary shared folder may be visible in Finder without being configured as the backup destination.
- Network and credentials: Confirm the Mac can reach the NAS on the local network and use credentials that can access the share. If macOS requests credentials, provide an account with access to the designated destination.
- Quota and free space: Check that the share’s capacity quota and the NAS’s available storage leave room for the backup. A destination that is too constrained cannot hold the intended backup data.
- Version compatibility: Compare your NAS firmware and macOS release with the versions in UGREEN’s guide, and check current requirements if you use a different release.
These checks follow UGREEN’s Mac and Time Machine setup guide. If Finder works but Time Machine still does not show the destination, revisit the distinction between a browsable NAS share and a share that has been designated as a Time Machine folder with SMB and Bonjour configured.
Protect the NAS copy and test recovery
A computer-to-NAS backup protects against some computer-side problems, but it does not protect the NAS copy if the NAS is lost or damaged. UGREEN recommends keeping an additional copy on an external drive, in cloud storage, or on another NAS. The point is to have an independent destination, not merely a second feature on the same NAS. RAID can help with some drive-failure situations, and snapshots can be useful, but UGREEN says RAID and snapshots are not substitutes for an independent backup destination.

Check your specific NAS model’s supported drives, file systems, and capacity before choosing a disk. No specific external-drive model or cloud provider is established as the required choice, so use the destination that fits your device and needs rather than relying on an unsupported compatibility assumption.
After the first backup, restore a few representative files and open them. Choose examples from the folders you intended to protect, rather than testing only a single easy-to-replace item. A task reporting completion does not by itself confirm that the files you care about can be recovered and used. This check is a practical way to catch a wrong destination, missing source folder, or unusable copy before there is an emergency.
For Time Machine, UGREEN describes the network backup as a sparsebundle image; do not manually delete files inside it. Manage it through Time Machine and UGOS controls, and retain the encryption password if encryption is enabled. The password is essential to an encrypted backup: UGREEN warns that losing it can make the backup unrecoverable. Keep it somewhere secure and separate from the NAS copy so that the backup does not depend on a password stored only alongside it.

Keep an active Photos library off the network share
UGREEN advises against keeping an active Apple Photos library on network or internet storage. Keep the live library on the Mac or on directly attached storage formatted for the library. Back up that Mac-stored library with Time Machine, or export originals to a regular NAS folder if other users need access to image files. See UGREEN’s Mac file-management guide.

This distinction is between the working library and a copy of its contents. The active Photos library should remain on the Mac or directly attached storage, while the NAS can hold a backup made through Time Machine or exported originals in a normal share. Do not treat a regular network folder as a suitable location for the live library simply because it is visible in Finder.
Frequently asked questions
Can I back up a Windows PC to a UGREEN NAS?
Yes. UGREEN documents its desktop client for Windows and macOS. Install the client, sign in, then use Sync & Backup > Back up & Restore > Add > Backup this computer to select folders and a NAS destination. Keep the PC awake, connected, and the client open while the task runs.
Can I use Time Machine with a UGREEN NAS?
UGREEN documents Time Machine over SMB for Mac. In UGOS Pro, enable SMB and Bonjour, designate a dedicated shared folder as the Time Machine folder, then select it in macOS under System Settings > General > Time Machine. UGREEN’s cited procedure specifies UGOS Pro 1.9.0.0035 or later and macOS Monterey 12 or later; verify current requirements for your exact versions.
Does “Backup this computer” keep earlier versions of overwritten files?
UGREEN says this workflow retains files deleted from the source computer but does not provide version history for overwritten files. If Mac file history is what you need, UGREEN describes Time Machine as the history-oriented option. Do not assume the selected-folder task can restore an earlier overwritten revision.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow much space should I give Time Machine?
UGREEN recommends a dedicated Time Machine destination of at least twice the Mac’s storage capacity as a starting point for retaining more history. It is not a guarantee of a particular retention period. How long history remains depends on how much data changes and the available quota and NAS storage.
Why can I see the NAS in Finder but not in Time Machine?
Finder access alone does not prove the Time Machine destination is fully configured. Check that SMB and Bonjour are enabled in UGOS Pro, that a shared folder is designated as the Time Machine folder, that the Mac can reach the NAS and use valid credentials, and that quota and free space are adequate.
Can I store my live Apple Photos library on the NAS?
UGREEN advises against keeping an active Photos library on network or internet storage. Keep the live library on the Mac or directly attached storage. Back it up with Time Machine or export originals to an ordinary NAS folder for access by other users.
Does a backup on the NAS protect me if the NAS itself is lost?
No. The computer-to-NAS copy does not independently protect data from loss or damage to the NAS. UGREEN recommends another copy on an external drive, in cloud storage, or on another NAS. RAID and snapshots are not substitutes for that independent backup.

Does “Backup this computer” keep earlier versions of overwritten files?
No version history for overwritten files is documented for this workflow. UGREEN says it retains source-deleted files, but that is different from keeping older revisions of changed files. For Mac backup history, UGREEN describes Time Machine as the history-oriented option.
How much space should I give Time Machine?
UGREEN recommends a dedicated destination at least twice the Mac’s storage capacity as a starting point for retaining more history. This is not a promised retention period; actual history depends on data changes and available quota and NAS storage.
Why can I see the NAS in Finder but not in Time Machine?
Check that SMB and Bonjour are enabled, that a shared folder is designated as the Time Machine folder, that the Mac can reach the NAS and use valid credentials, and that quota and free space are adequate. Finder access alone does not mean Time Machine service discovery and destination setup are complete.
Can I store my live Apple Photos library on the NAS?
UGREEN advises against keeping an active Photos library on network or internet storage. Keep it on the Mac or directly attached storage; back it up with Time Machine or export originals to a regular NAS folder.
Does a backup on the NAS protect against losing the NAS?
No. UGREEN recommends an additional independent copy on an external drive, in cloud storage, or on another NAS. RAID and snapshots are not substitutes for an independent backup.
The Bottom Line
Use UGREEN’s desktop client for selected Windows or Mac folders, and use Time Machine over SMB when you want Mac backup history. Give the destination enough space, keep the computer connected during the initial backup, and verify recovery by restoring and opening files. Then keep a separate copy of important NAS data elsewhere: a backup stored only on the NAS does not protect against loss of the NAS.
