Before starting a major build, make a separate copy of the world and check that the copy was created. Keep it somewhere other than the active save if you can. The right steps depend on whether you play Bedrock on Windows, use a Realm, or play on another edition or device.
Choose a backup method for your edition and platform
| Method | What it gives you | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Bedrock world export on Windows | An exported world file that you can save to a location you choose. | The documented export route is for Bedrock on Windows; do not assume it applies to Java, mobile, or consoles. |
| Download a Realm world | A local copy of the current Realm world, or a selected backup listed in the Realm’s Backups screen. | Minecraft says Realm backups are not retained indefinitely. Keep a downloaded copy if you need to preserve progress. |
| Windows Bedrock cloud backup and sync | Cloud backup and access across devices are described in Minecraft Bedrock Edition 26.40 release notes. | Availability depends on the installed version and cloud storage; Minecraft notes that an upload can fail when cloud storage is full. Cloud sync alone is not a verified independent archive. |
| Other editions and devices | Platform-specific guidance is listed in Minecraft’s Backup & Restore support index. | Use the steps for your exact edition and device; a single procedure is not established for all platforms. |
Export a Bedrock world on Windows
Minecraft Help documents an in-game export that creates a separate world file you can save before changing the world. The retrieved Help page is a Spanish translation that says it was AI-generated and may contain errors, so confirm the labels shown in your current English game version.

- Open Minecraft and select Play.
- Find the world and select its pencil icon to open its settings.
- Under General Settings, go to File Management.
- Select Export World. Choose any export settings you want, then select Export World again.
- Choose a save location and complete the export.
- Check that the exported file is present in the location you chose before you begin the build.
For a copy you can still reach if the computer fails, store the exported file on a separate device or in a storage service you control. Minecraft Education’s world-export guidance names OneDrive, Teams, Google Drive, Google Classroom, and a USB flash drive as sharing destinations; it does not establish particular hardware requirements or guarantee compatibility for every Minecraft edition.
Download a world from a Realm
Use the Realm slot controls to download the current world or select a listed backup. After downloading, the world appears in your local worlds list and can be played offline.
#1 Best Overall
- Open the Realm’s slot screen and edit the world.
- Choose Download World to download the latest world, or choose Backups and select a listed backup.
- Wait for the download to finish, then confirm the world appears in your local worlds list before replacing or changing the Realm.
Minecraft’s official Realm guidance warns: “Do not rely on your Realm’s backups, because they are not retained indefinitely.” A Realm backup is therefore not a permanent archive; download a copy when keeping the progress matters.
What to do on other editions and devices
Minecraft’s Backup & Restore support index separates instructions for Java Edition, Bedrock on Windows, Android, iPhone and iPad, consoles, and Realms. Find the entry for your edition and device rather than applying Windows Bedrock’s Export World steps to another platform. The available guidance here does not establish current step-by-step procedures for every non-Windows platform.

Check the Windows Bedrock cloud option
Minecraft Bedrock Edition 26.40 release notes describe cloud backup and cloud sync for Windows worlds, allowing world data to be backed up and accessed across devices on that platform. This is version-specific: check that your installed version includes the feature and that your cloud storage has room. The notes also describe an error when upload fails because cloud storage is full. For a major build, keep a separate copy you can locate and verify rather than treating sync by itself as an independent archive.

Verify the copy before building
- Make the copy before the first major edit, not after an unwanted change has already been saved.
- Confirm the export completed or the downloaded Realm world appears in the local worlds list.
- Keep the copy distinct from the active world, and choose storage you can still access if the device is unavailable.
- For cloud storage, check that the upload succeeded and space remains available.
- Keep track of which copy is the backup so you do not accidentally continue building in it instead of the active world.
