Before paying for a video game collector’s edition, verify the seller, confirm exactly what the edition includes, ask for photos of the item they will ship, and check your refund and dispute options. A suspiciously low price is a reason to investigate, not proof of a fake—and a marketplace’s rules do not authenticate an individual listing.
Start by checking who is selling it
Review the seller’s recent feedback and read the comments, rather than relying on a star rating alone. The FTC warns that online reviews can be fake or misleading. Look for a usable contact method, shipping charges, return conditions, and whether the seller is a business or a private individual.

For auctions and older games, Nintendo advises checking the site’s reputation and buying legal, licensed products. It says a retailer with a standard retail operation may be more accountable than a pure auction site; that is a general rule of thumb, not a guarantee about a seller or item. See Nintendo’s guidance on online auction sites.

Match the listing to the edition
Compare the edition name and promised contents with the publisher’s announcement or product information for that specific release, if available. Ask the seller to clarify what is included and whether anything is missing, opened, damaged, replaced, or reproduced. There is no universal contents checklist for every collector’s edition: the details vary by release.

Ask for photos of the actual item
Request several clear photos of the item the seller has, including its packaging and the contents relevant to that edition. Stock images cannot show the item’s actual condition or establish that the seller has it, the FTC says. Keep the photos, the listing, and the seller’s written answers.
Descriptions such as “used,” “vintage,” “refurbished,” or “as is” describe condition; they do not establish authenticity. The FTC cautions that such descriptions may mean an item is not in top condition.

Treat low prices and urgent pitches as reasons to pause
The FTC warns that an expensive item offered at a very low price might be fake. That makes price a reason to investigate, not a standalone authenticity test: no universal price threshold for video game collector’s editions is established, and a discount alone does not prove a listing is counterfeit.

Check buyer protection before checkout
Read the marketplace’s refund, return, and dispute rules before paying. Confirm that the stated protection applies to this item and seller, who is eligible, and how long you have to make a claim; marketplace protections differ and deadlines may be short, according to the FTC.
Pay through the platform’s checkout and use a credit card or secure payment service with buyer protection where available. The FTC warns against requests to pay outside the marketplace and identifies wire transfers, gift cards, and cryptocurrency as payment methods that can be difficult to recover. Moving a transaction off-platform may also forfeit marketplace protections.

For U.S. shoppers, the FTC recommends keeping correspondence and disputing a credit or debit card charge if a purchase goes wrong. In the EU, the Commission advises secure payment with fraud protection and dispute resolution; after a scam, consumers can ask their bank about freezing a card or seeking a chargeback. Exact rights and deadlines depend on location and payment method.

In the United States, the FTC says the INFORM Consumers Act requires online marketplaces to verify the identities of high-volume third-party sellers and make suspicious activity easier to report. Those duties do not certify that a specific listing is genuine. The FTC described the requirements in its June 2023 announcement.
eBay prohibits counterfeit and fake goods as well as unauthorized copies, including bootleg or self-made game recordings and copied software. Its counterfeit policy sets rules for eBay listings; it is not an authentication service or a guarantee about every item on eBay or another marketplace.
For EU online purchases, the European Commission describes seller identity and contact transparency, disclosure of whether the seller is private or professional, and online-shopping rights including withdrawal and legal guarantees. Its guidance was updated July 16, 2026; applicability and exceptions depend on the transaction and seller. Read the Commission’s consumer guidance rather than assuming those rights apply in other regions.
If the item is missing, incomplete, or misrepresented
- Preserve the evidence. Save the listing and seller profile, messages, payment receipt, and photos of the package and item.
- Contact the seller promptly. Explain the problem in writing and retain the reply.
- Use the marketplace’s process. Follow its stated steps while your claim window is open. Do not assume a marketplace claim pauses a separate deadline set by your card issuer or payment provider.
- Contact your payment provider if needed. Ask how to dispute the charge and follow its instructions. The FTC advises U.S. card users to dispute a charge when appropriate; EU consumers can ask their bank about a chargeback.
- Report a suspicious listing. Use the marketplace’s reporting channel. On eBay, the counterfeit policy includes a route for reporting suspected policy violations.
U.S. consumers can report suspected dishonest businesses to ReportFraud.ftc.gov and their state attorney general. EU consumers can contact relevant national authorities; the European Commission also identifies European Consumer Centres for cross-border purchases within the EU, Norway, and Iceland.
