Run on upstream-conformant Kubernetes, package software as OCI containers, keep infrastructure and policy declarative, isolate GPU and network integrations, export data and telemetry, and prove that a representative workload can run on a second provider before production scale.
Specialized clouds can offer scarce accelerators, high-bandwidth fabrics, and managed AI services. Those benefits are valuable only if you can leave without rewriting the application, losing access to data, or waiting months for a replacement environment.

What vendor lock-in means for an AI workload
Lock-in is more than having to change a billing account. An AI deployment is difficult to move when its control plane, container runtime, GPU software, networking, storage, identity, security policy, or observability depends on one provider’s private interfaces.
For example, a Kubernetes manifest may look portable while relying on a proprietary scheduler, custom resource definitions (CRDs), provider-only ingress annotations, a private container registry, a managed feature store, or a database whose export format is incomplete. A training job can also depend on a particular GPU topology, driver branch, CUDA and NCCL combination, or fabric configuration. Those dependencies become migration work even when the application code itself is unchanged.

Make upstream Kubernetes part of the procurement contract
Kubernetes is the most practical portability contract for many AI workloads because its API and ecosystem are widely implemented. The Cloud Native Computing Foundation’s 2025 Annual Cloud Native Survey reported that 82% of container users run Kubernetes in production. The same survey found that 66% of organizations hosting generative AI use Kubernetes for some or all inference workloads. Those figures do not make every Kubernetes service portable, but they explain why upstream compatibility is a meaningful baseline.
Require a certified, upstream-conformant distribution
Ask the provider which official upstream Kubernetes version is running, how quickly supported versions track upstream, and whether the service is CNCF-certified. NVIDIA’s AI-cloud requirements call for official CNCF-certified upstream versions, unrestricted core APIs, and no mandatory proprietary extensions. The requirement is explicit: “No (Mandatory) Proprietary Extensions: Core functionality must remain portable to other standard environments.”
Put these points in the contract or service description:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Supported upstream Kubernetes versions and their end-of-support dates.
- Unrestricted use of standard Deployments, Jobs, StatefulSets, Services, ConfigMaps, Secrets, ServiceAccounts, admission webhooks, and projected service-account tokens.
- Access to ordinary Kubernetes APIs for creating, updating, watching, and deleting resources.
- No requirement that a workload use a provider-only operator, CRD, scheduler, policy engine, or image format.
- A documented process for exporting manifests, policies, and cluster configuration.
Reject hidden dependencies in the plugin layer
NVIDIA’s GB300 requirements state: “No proprietary lock-in of CNI, ingress, CSI, or scheduler; upstream/OSS usable.” Treat this as a practical acceptance test. You should be able to select a standard container network interface (CNI), container storage interface (CSI), ingress implementation, and scheduler, or at least run upstream and open-source implementations without losing core functionality.
Request a complete inventory of provider-specific annotations, CRDs, controllers, admission policies, and sidecars in the reference architecture. For each item, record what replaces it elsewhere and whether the replacement changes performance, security, or operations.
Design the application so provider-specific code stays at the edge
Package with OCI images and reproducible dependencies
Build application and inference images as OCI-compatible containers. Pin operating-system packages, language dependencies, model-serving libraries, and accelerator libraries. Generate a software bill of materials (SBOM) for each release and retain the exact image digest used in production.

Use reproducible builds where practical. A second provider should be able to pull the same digest from a registry you control or from an exported archive. Avoid a build pipeline that silently downloads a provider’s private base image or injects credentials and certificates at runtime without a documented equivalent.
Keep infrastructure and policy declarative
Store Kubernetes manifests, Helm or equivalent templates, admission policies, secrets references, node labels, and autoscaling rules in version control. Infrastructure-as-code should use broadly implemented resources rather than provider-only objects. Separate the portable core from a small overlay containing accelerator, network, storage, or capacity settings for each environment.
Do not place a provider’s resource identifier directly in application code. Use configuration for endpoint names, queue or topic identifiers, object-storage buckets, and model registries. Keep secrets out of images and source control; use a portable secret interface or a controlled adapter that can be replaced during migration.
Treat the GPU software stack as a replaceable boundary
GPU portability is often harder than Kubernetes portability. Record, test, and version every item that affects execution:
- GPU model, memory capacity, interconnect, and node topology.
- Host driver and firmware versions.
- CUDA, NCCL, accelerator runtime, and framework versions.
- Container runtime and device-plugin behavior.
- Scheduler, topology-aware placement rules, and requested resources.
- Collective-communication settings, fabric configuration, and performance assumptions.
- Model-weight distribution, checkpoint format, and cache behavior.
Place these assumptions in replaceable GPU node pools rather than spreading them through application manifests. Maintain at least one validated configuration for a different accelerator or provider. A workload that requires a specific GPU generation may not achieve identical throughput elsewhere, but you should know the performance and accuracy impact before an emergency migration.

Use portable networking and storage interfaces
Prefer standard service names, Kubernetes Services, ordinary ingress behavior, and a documented service-discovery mechanism. Keep provider-specific load-balancer annotations and firewall rules in an environment overlay. Record every dependency on a private DNS zone, traffic manager, service mesh, or high-performance fabric.

For persistent data, use CSI-compatible volumes where possible and define backup and restore independently of the provider’s console. Verify that snapshots can be exported or recreated from application-level backups. A volume snapshot that exists only inside one provider is not an exit plan.
Make data export a routine operation
Maintain exportable object and database formats, including schema, metadata, retention information, and integrity checks. Keep encryption keys under independent control where possible, with a documented procedure for re-encrypting data in the destination environment. Test restoring a realistic dataset, not just downloading a file.
Write down the egress-cost and egress-time model. Include the size of model weights, training data, checkpoints, feature stores, container images, logs, and backups. Account for parallel transfer limits, transfer-tool fees, temporary storage, and the time during which both environments must run.
Export identity, policy, and telemetry
Use interoperable OIDC or SPIFFE-style workload identities where feasible. Keep authorization policy in a form that can be reviewed and applied on another cluster. Map provider IAM roles to application identities rather than embedding provider role names throughout the codebase.
Send logs, metrics, traces, audit events, and alerts to systems your organization controls. Retain dashboard definitions and alert thresholds as code. During a migration, an observability gap can hide degraded throughput, queue buildup, data corruption, or security events even when the application appears healthy.
Build a migration capability before production scale
A written exit plan is useful only when it has been executed. Use a representative inference or training slice, including its container images, model weights, data sample, secrets flow, autoscaling behavior, and monitoring.

- Inventory dependencies. Export all Kubernetes manifests and list provider APIs, CRDs, annotations, images, registries, GPU versions, data stores, identity integrations, network rules, and operational dashboards.
- Classify each dependency. Mark it portable, replaceable with an open implementation, or provider-specific. Assign an owner and a documented substitute for every non-portable item.
- Prepare the destination. Create an upstream-conformant Kubernetes cluster, equivalent identity, network, storage, registry, and telemetry paths. Use infrastructure-as-code rather than manual console steps.
- Transfer a controlled dataset. Export model weights, checkpoints, schemas, and a representative data sample. Record transfer duration, bytes moved, integrity checks, and direct and indirect costs.
- Deploy the same release. Use the same OCI image digests and pinned dependencies where hardware permits. Apply only the destination overlay for node labels, storage classes, ingress, and accelerator settings.
- Validate behavior. Compare correctness, model accuracy, latency distributions, throughput, startup time, batch behavior, failure recovery, and autoscaling. For training, compare convergence and checkpoint restore behavior.
- Validate operations and security. Confirm that identities, admission policies, secrets, logs, metrics, traces, alerts, backups, incident access, and deletion procedures work without the original provider.
- Record the timed result. Measure restore time, performance variance, data-transfer cost, observability gaps, and engineering effort. Set a maximum acceptable recovery time and revisit the test after major GPU, Kubernetes, or model changes.
Use confidential computing without creating a new lock-in boundary
Some organizations must protect model weights and sensitive inference inputs from cloud operators or unauthorized infrastructure. Confidential Containers provide one portability-oriented approach: standard Kubernetes pods run inside lightweight confidential virtual machines based on Kata Containers, changing the trust boundary while preserving the Kubernetes operating model.
NVIDIA’s reference architecture describes delivering encrypted model weights to a customer-controlled environment and decrypting them only after remote attestation verifies the hardware, guest, runtime policy, and GPU state. In practice, that means the key-release service must recognize an approved combination of CPU or GPU trusted execution environment (TEE), firmware, guest image, confidential-container runtime, policy, and accelerator state.
Before choosing a provider, verify these details on every target:
- Supported CPU and GPU TEEs and the exact hardware generations available.
- Confidential Containers and Kata Containers versions, kernel requirements, and supported Kubernetes releases.
- Attestation service ownership, evidence format, certificate rotation, and revocation behavior.
- Whether your key service can enforce measurements for the guest, runtime policy, container image, and GPU state.
- How encrypted weights, checkpoints, logs, and crash artifacts are handled.
- What happens when attestation fails, hardware changes, or the provider performs maintenance.
If attestation and key release work only through one provider’s proprietary service, confidential computing may protect the workload while still creating a migration dependency. Keep policy and key-release logic documented, exportable, and testable on a second environment.

Nearly twice as many certified Kubernetes AI platforms were reported by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation in March 2026 compared with the program’s November 2025 starting point. More certified options can improve choice, but certification does not guarantee identical GPU performance, data services, or operational practices. Keep your own acceptance test as the deciding evidence.

Negotiate an exit-ready contract
Technical portability can still fail if the contract blocks access to data or assistance. Negotiate these terms before committing production workloads:
- Export: formats, APIs, metadata, snapshots, logs, audit records, and encryption-key responsibilities.
- Deletion: verified deletion timelines, backups, replicas, caches, and certificates of destruction.
- Egress: rates, free allowances, transfer limits, throttling, and any fees for support-assisted export.
- Notice: advance notice for region closure, GPU retirement, Kubernetes-version removal, major API changes, and material price changes.
- Access: incident-time access to logs, metrics, audit trails, and affected infrastructure details.
- Capacity: reservation, shortage, substitution, and service-credit terms for the accelerator types you require.
- Upstream support: the Kubernetes versions, APIs, and open implementations the provider will continue to support.
- Migration assistance: named technical contacts, reasonable export support, and cooperation with a successor provider.
Common failure modes and fixes
“It runs in a container, so it is portable.”
A container does not remove dependencies on GPU drivers, host firmware, network fabric, storage semantics, IAM, or proprietary operators. Maintain an explicit accelerator and platform compatibility matrix and test it on another substrate.
“The provider offers Kubernetes, but the workload needs its extensions.”
Extensions may be useful, but mandatory extensions are a lock-in signal. Isolate them in an adapter or environment overlay, identify an open replacement, and verify that core deployment and recovery still work without them.
“Backups exist, so migration is covered.”
A backup that has never been restored is an assumption. Restore a production-sized sample elsewhere, include schemas and metadata, and measure the full transfer and validation process.
“The destination has the same GPU name.”
Identical model names do not guarantee identical driver, firmware, topology, partitioning, fabric, or scheduler behavior. Re-run throughput, latency, accuracy, and failure-recovery tests after every accelerator-stack change.
“Security can be rebuilt after the move.”
Identity, key release, admission policy, audit logs, and confidential-computing attestation are part of the workload. Include them in the first migration rehearsal, not as a later hardening phase.
A practical go/no-go checklist
Do not make a production commitment until you can answer “yes” to the applicable questions:
Recommended Free Tools
- Can the workload run on an official, upstream-conformant Kubernetes version at another provider?
- Are standard Kubernetes APIs usable without mandatory proprietary extensions?
- Are CNI, ingress, CSI, and scheduler dependencies portable or isolated in replaceable overlays?
- Are OCI images, SBOMs, dependencies, model weights, and checkpoints reproducible and exportable?
- Is the GPU driver, CUDA, NCCL, runtime, topology, scheduler, and performance matrix documented?
- Can data and encryption keys be exported, transferred, restored, and verified within the required time?
- Can identities, policies, logs, metrics, traces, alerts, and audit records operate in a second environment?
- If confidential computing is required, do TEEs, runtimes, attestation, and key release work on every target?
- Have you measured redeployment cost, duration, throughput, accuracy, operational effort, and missing capabilities?
- Does the contract cover export, deletion, egress, incident access, notice, capacity, upstream support, and migration assistance?
The strongest portability evidence is a successful, timed redeployment of a representative workload. Build that test while the original platform is healthy, repeat it after major changes, and use its measured results—not a provider’s portability claim—as the basis for scale and contract decisions.
