For a compatible file, FFmpeg can loop the video with -stream_loop -1 and send its existing encoded audio and video with -c copy. That avoids decoding and re-encoding on the computer sending the stream. It does not stop YouTube from processing the incoming live stream: YouTube says it automatically transcodes live input into playback formats for different devices and connections.
The command below is a starting template, not a guarantee that every 4K60 file will work unchanged. Compatibility depends on the file’s codecs and stream structure, timestamps, output format, and YouTube ingest requirements.

What “no re-encoding” does—and does not—mean
FFmpeg streamcopy passes already encoded packets through without decoding and encoding them again. The FFmpeg documentation describes this as “very fast” with “no quality loss.” That means no additional local encoding loss; it does not mean every source file is suitable for streamcopy.
Recommended Free Tools
It also does not mean viewers receive the original incoming bitstream directly. YouTube Help says: “YouTube will automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all of your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.” Local streamcopy and YouTube’s playback processing are separate stages.

Loop a compatible file with FFmpeg
Command template
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -c copy -f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/$STREAM_KEY"
This is an illustrative template, not a tested command. Replace input.mp4 with your file and use the server URL and stream key shown for your broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Keep the stream key private: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel.
- Check the input. Confirm that the file contains the intended video and audio streams and note their codecs, frame rate, resolution, and timestamps. FFmpeg’s
-c copycannot convert codecs or repair every incompatible stream. - Get the ingest details. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream in the Live Control Room and copy its server URL and stream key into your encoder configuration. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions use these values to connect an encoder.
- Place the options correctly.
-stream_loop -1is an input option, so it comes before-i input.mp4. The value-1requests indefinite repetition.-rereads the file at its native rate, which is useful when pacing file input for live output.-c copyis an output option and requests streamcopy. - Start the process and inspect the result. Check FFmpeg’s stream mapping and output for errors, then watch YouTube’s live stream-health indicators. A process running without an obvious error is not proof that viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
The template uses FLV output as a common RTMP-style example; it is not a universal compatibility prescription. Use the ingest protocol and output arrangement supported by your current YouTube encoder setup and your FFmpeg build. If streamcopy fails, investigate the reported stream or muxing incompatibility rather than assuming the loop option is at fault.
Check whether the source meets YouTube’s live input guidance
YouTube’s English UK encoder guidance, accessed 2026-10-03, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video. It supports frame rates up to 60 fps and recommends constant bitrate (CBR) with a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. The same guidance says RTMPS is the secure ingest option it recommends.

For 2160p60, that English UK table lists these ingest bitrates. The figures are YouTube recommendations and minimums, not a requirement to alter a file that already meets your needs. Regional language versions have shown inconsistent table figures, so check the current YouTube Help table for your region before configuring an encoder.
| Codec | Recommended bitrate at 2160p60 | Minimum bitrate at 2160p60 |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
A source file’s bitrate alone is not a reason to re-encode. With streamcopy, FFmpeg retains the encoded streams; it does not lower their bitrate to meet a target. Changing bitrate generally requires encoding, so do not treat a lower bitrate setting as a streamcopy fix.
YouTube’s encoder guidance also says 2160p streams do not offer its low-latency setting and use normal latency. This is a YouTube-side constraint, not a setting that streamcopy can change.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
When streamcopy is the wrong tool
Streamcopy is the simplest route only when the source streams and output requirements are compatible. It preserves the existing encoded streams, so it cannot transform their contents.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Need | Streamcopy | Transcoding |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the existing encoded audio and video | Copies packets without decoding or re-encoding; adds no encoding generation loss. | Decodes and encodes again, using compute and potentially adding generation loss. |
| Change codec or encoding parameters | Cannot do this while copying the encoded stream. | Can produce a different codec or encoding configuration. |
| Scale, filter, or add overlays | Cannot apply decoded-frame filters or overlays. | Normally requires decoding and encoding to make the transformed output. |
| Meet a different output bitrate | Retains the source bitstream rather than lowering its bitrate. | Can encode to a different bitrate, with corresponding compute and quality trade-offs. |
If the source is incompatible with the ingest path, a remux may be sufficient when only the container or stream packaging needs to change; if the codec or encoding parameters must change, re-encoding is generally needed. The correct remedy depends on the actual FFmpeg error and file streams—there is no universal streamcopy command for every 4K60 file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common problems and fixes
- FFmpeg reports that the output format or codec is unsupported. Check the input stream codecs and the chosen output format against the current ingest requirements. Streamcopy cannot convert an unsupported codec; select a compatible source, remux if only packaging is the issue, or transcode if conversion is required.
- The stream connects but YouTube reports poor health. Compare the incoming resolution, frame rate, codec, keyframe interval, and bitrate with YouTube’s current guidance and read the specific health warning. The template does not enforce CBR or alter keyframes because it copies the source streams.
- The command exits or the loop does not continue. Review FFmpeg’s output for input or muxing errors and confirm
-stream_loop -1is positioned before the relevant-i. The option repeats file input; it cannot make an invalid or unreadable input playable. - The stream key is rejected or the wrong broadcast receives the feed. Re-copy the server URL and key for the intended stream from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Treat the key as a secret and replace it in Studio if it has been exposed.
- Viewers see a delay or different playback formats. YouTube performs its own live-stream transcoding, and 2160p uses normal latency rather than the low-latency setting. Neither behavior is prevented by local streamcopy.
Plan for operation and archives
A looping FFmpeg process only repeats the input while the process and sending computer remain operational and connected. It does not itself guarantee uninterrupted streaming or automatic recovery if the process, connection, or YouTube ingest fails.

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not treat that as a promise of an indefinite archive for a longer loop.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live from uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud rather than on your home computer: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
