Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBitcoin addresses are pseudonymous, not anonymous: transactions are public and permanent, and information from a purchase, exchange, public post, or other disclosure can connect an address to you. You can reduce easy connections by using a fresh receive address for each payment, keeping different payment purposes separate, and checking what your wallet reveals to its servers or peers. None of these steps erases a link that already exists or guarantees that an address cannot be identified.
What it means to link a Bitcoin address to your identity
A Bitcoin address does not display your legal name by itself. It is a pseudonymous identifier associated with transactions on a public ledger. The connection to a person usually comes from information outside the ledger: for example, an exchange or merchant may record who made a payment, or someone may publish an address alongside a name or social account. Bitcoin.org’s guidance describes Bitcoin transactions as public and permanent and cautions that protecting privacy takes effort.

Once an address is associated with you, observers can examine its visible transaction history and look for links to other addresses. This does not automatically reveal every fact about the person behind it, and a transaction graph is not the same thing as a verified identity record. But a known address can expose more activity than the single payment that first revealed it, especially when later transactions connect funds or addresses.
Privacy measures are therefore about limiting the information you disclose and avoiding easy associations. They do not make the public ledger private, conceal a payment from the recipient, or guarantee that blockchain analysis cannot draw connections.

Why a fresh address helps—and what it cannot undo
Use a different receive address for each payment
When you reuse one address for multiple incoming payments, anyone who can see that address can readily associate those payments with one another. Generating a fresh receive address for each payment makes that direct association less obvious. Modern wallets commonly generate fresh addresses automatically; use the wallet’s receive flow to get a new one rather than copying an old address from a note or public page. Bitcoin.org’s FAQ and privacy guidance recommend fresh addresses for this reason.
Older addresses generally remain valid for receiving funds, but continued use weakens privacy by making payments easier to group. Do not assume an address is single-use in the technical sense; the point is that reuse adds visible information about which payments may belong together.
A new address does not sever a known connection
If you give a merchant an address while making a purchase, the merchant may retain a record connecting that payment to your account or identity. Creating a new address for the next payment does not erase the first record or make the earlier transaction anonymous. Likewise, a fresh address will not conceal an identity link already created by an exchange, custodian, public post, or payment record.

Keep identifying information away from addresses you want private
Before posting or sharing an address, decide whether you are comfortable making the association public. An address placed on a personal website or social profile can be tied to that identity by anyone who sees the post. The same concern applies when you send an address in a message or submit it to a service that knows your name: the recipient may be able to connect the address with you even if the connection is not visible to everyone else.
- Do not publish a personal receive address on a profile, website, or public forum if you do not want payments to be attributed to that identity.
- When a service needs to pay you, consider what identity information the service already has and what records it may keep.
- Do not assume that a new address makes an already disclosed payment relationship private.
For public donations or business receipts, a publicly advertised address may be useful precisely because it lets people associate payments with that organization or purpose. Treat that as an intentional disclosure, not as a private channel. If you need to keep those receipts apart from personal activity, use separate wallets or accounts and avoid later transactions that bring the funds together.
Separate payment purposes and avoid reconnecting them later
Using different wallets or accounts for public donations, business payments, and personal use can reduce direct mixing between those activities. The separation only helps while activity and funds remain separate. If you later spend from a transaction that combines funds from the different wallets, you may create a connection that observers can use to associate the activity.
Bitcoin transactions can spend more than one prior output as inputs and create new outputs. When inputs from separate activity appear together in a transaction, observers may infer that they are controlled together. That inference is not proof of common ownership in every case, but merging funds can weaken the separation you intended. The Bitcoin Developer Guide discusses unique addresses, change addresses, CoinJoin, and avoiding merges as privacy considerations.

Practical separation checklist
- Choose distinct wallets or accounts for activities you do not want readily associated, such as public fundraising and personal payments.
- Keep a record of which wallet serves which purpose without putting public identifying details into a place others can access.
- When spending, review which funds the wallet is selecting. Avoid combining unrelated funds merely for convenience if maintaining separation matters to you.
- Use the wallet’s fresh change-address behavior where available; do not assume that a new receive address alone keeps later spending separate.
Wallet behavior and transaction history affect the result, so there is no universal rule that two wallets remain unlinkable simply because they started separately. Separation is a practice to preserve, not a property guaranteed by the wallet labels.
Understand what your wallet and network can see
Address privacy is not only an on-chain issue. Some wallet designs query a server for address or transaction information. Depending on the implementation, that server may learn which addresses or payment relationships the wallet is checking. A lightweight wallet can disclose information to the server it queries; a full node or a wallet using a different server architecture can change who receives that data. These designs are not interchangeable, and wallet implementations can change, so check the current documentation for the wallet you use rather than assuming a category behaves identically across products.
Bitcoin Core’s privacy guidance describes Tor as a way to help separate online activity from a user’s IP address. That can reduce the network-level information associated with wallet activity, but it does not hide transactions from the public blockchain. It also cannot prevent a merchant, exchange, or other counterparty from learning your identity through its own records.

| What to check | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh receive and change addresses | Reuse can make payments or later spending easier to associate. | Whether the wallet generates fresh addresses and how it handles change. |
| Server or peer disclosure | A wallet’s queries may reveal addresses or related activity to the service or peers it contacts. | What data the current implementation sends, and to whom. |
| Tor support | Tor can help separate network activity from an IP address; it does not make on-chain activity private. | Whether the wallet supports Tor and what configuration is required. |
| Key control and backups | Privacy choices are of little use if you cannot safely control or recover your funds. | Who controls the keys and what backup process the wallet requires. |
| Coin selection and collaborative transactions | Spending choices can merge activity, while collaborative methods may complicate some analysis. | What the wallet supports and whether you understand its transaction flow and tradeoffs. |
Bitcoin.org’s wallet assessment criteria include address reuse, disclosure to servers or peers, and Tor compatibility. Those criteria are useful because wallet privacy depends on implementation and user behavior, not only on whether a wallet is described as a wallet for Bitcoin.

CoinJoin
CoinJoin is a collaborative transaction approach that can make some chain-analysis heuristics less straightforward. It is not a guarantee of anonymity, and its practical value depends on how the transaction is constructed, the wallet’s support, and how the user handles funds before and after the transaction. Do not treat a CoinJoin label as proof that all links to your identity or prior activity have disappeared.
Payjoin
BIP 78 describes Payjoin, another collaborative transaction approach. The existence of the proposal does not establish broad wallet adoption or imply that every implementation supports it. Before relying on Payjoin, verify that the wallet and payment flow you intend to use actually implement it, and understand the operational and security tradeoffs involved. Collaborative transactions can complicate some analysis; they do not promise absolute anonymity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSilent Payments
BIP 352 specifies Silent Payments, a static payment-address approach intended to avoid on-chain linkability of payments. A specification is not evidence of broad wallet support. Verify that the wallet implements the feature and understand its backup requirements before using it; do not assume that an ordinary static address or an address generated by another method has the same properties.

What to do if an address is already linked to you
You cannot remove an identity connection from Bitcoin’s permanent public history. If you discover that an address has been posted publicly or associated with you by a service, treat its visible transaction history as potentially attributable to you. Stop reusing it for new payments if you want to limit further direct association, but do not describe that change as erasing the old link.
Review whether your later transactions connect the address’s funds with other activity, and avoid unnecessary consolidation if you want to preserve separation. If an exchange or merchant holds the identifying record, changing wallet addresses does not delete that party’s records. The practical response is to limit new disclosures and make future spending choices with the existing transaction history in mind.
Bitcoin.org also warns that information not currently traceable may become easier to trace in the future because the blockchain is permanent. A privacy decision should account for that long time horizon: a public transaction is not made private merely because no one has connected it to a person yet.

A realistic privacy routine
- Before receiving: generate a fresh receive address in your wallet for each payment, and decide whether the payer or audience will know your identity.
- Before publishing: check whether an address appears alongside your name, email, business, social profile, or another identifier. Publish only when the association is intended.
- Before spending: check which funds are being used and whether the transaction would merge activity you keep separate. Understand how the wallet creates change outputs.
- Before choosing wallet settings: review the current wallet documentation for address generation, server or peer queries, Tor support, key control, backups, and spending controls.
- Before adopting an advanced method: verify actual wallet support and learn its operational requirements. A proposal or protocol specification alone does not show that a given wallet can use it safely.
The right level of effort depends on what you are trying to keep separate and from whom. For many users, the most consequential basics are avoiding address reuse, not publishing identifying links inadvertently, and not merging funds from separate activities without understanding the visible connection that can result.
