Make a plan before the sale starts
Set your limit and list
Choose the most you can spend without borrowing or disrupting bills, savings goals or other priorities. Write that number down, then list the specific items you already intended to buy. You can use paper, a notes app or a budget tool you already have; you do not need to buy anything to make a plan.

The Federal Trade Commission advises shoppers to plan ahead by setting a budget and deciding what matters most about the item. The European Consumer Centre in Spain likewise recommends setting a budget and making a list of things you actually need. Those are practical planning suggestions; consumer rights and legal protections differ by location.
Separate needs from sale-created wants
For each item, ask: “Would I buy this at its ordinary price, or did the countdown and discount create the desire?” If it was not on your list, does not fit your budget, or would not be useful without the promotion, skip it. A limited-time offer is not a reason to revise your priorities.

Use a 24-hour pause for nonessential items
If an unplanned item catches your eye, do not buy it immediately. Save it to a list or leave it in your cart, then wait a full day before making a decision. Profeco, Mexico’s consumer protection agency, recommends this pause for nonessential purchases as a way to ease urgency and make room to consider emotional triggers, prices, budget and financial goals. It is a useful rule of thumb, not a guarantee that an impulse will disappear.
After the pause, revisit the item against your original budget and list. If the desire has faded, remove it. If you still want it, assess it on its merits rather than treating the time spent waiting—or the possibility that the offer will end—as a reason to buy.

Check whether the deal is actually good value
A discount label or countdown does not establish that a purchase is a bargain. Before paying, compare the product and seller, read the full description and deal conditions, and account for delivery charges and the return policy. The FTC recommends checking these details when shopping online; its guidance applies in the United States, and return rights and policies can vary elsewhere.
- Product: Confirm the model, size, compatibility, included accessories and other details that matter for your use.
- Seller: Compare the seller and the same or equivalent product from other sellers, not just the headline discount.
- Total cost: Check delivery and any other charges against your preset spending limit.
- Terms: Read the deal conditions and understand the return policy before placing the order.
- Usefulness: Ask whether the item solves the need you wrote down, rather than simply seeming attractive at a lower price.
Use price tracking without turning it into more shopping
Amazon offers tools such as lists, price history on eligible product pages and deal or price alerts. They can help you track products you were already considering, but they are optional—not safeguards that make an unplanned purchase wise. Repeated alerts and browsing can keep deals on your mind, so use them selectively and avoid checking them just to find something to buy. An alert is a prompt to review your plan, not an instruction to purchase.

Why a sale can make an unplanned purchase feel urgent
Promotions and countdowns can influence choices, which is why a pause and a written plan can be useful. Profeco’s January 30, 2026 article reports that the Asociación Mexicana de Ventas Online (AMVO) found six in ten Mexican digital shoppers say advertising and promotions influence their purchase decisions. That Mexico-specific finding concerns reported influence; it is not a measure of Prime Day impulse buying and does not show that any particular tactic prevents it.
