Before buying, verify that you are comparing the same product and condition, check the seller and the full offer terms, calculate the delivered price, and use a payment method that gives you a way to dispute a problem. Treat unusually low prices on branded goods as a reason to investigate, not a verdict by themselves.
How can you tell whether an online deal is real?
Start with the item, not the advertised percentage. A discount claim can look impressive while referring to a different model, condition, quantity, or bundle than the one you want. Compare the offer against the exact manufacturer and model number, then work out what you would actually pay.

- Match the product: Check the model number, size, color, included accessories, and quantity.
- Match the condition: Look for terms such as used, refurbished, vintage, close-out, or open-box. A lower price may be reasonable if the item is not new.
- Calculate the total: Include shipping, handling, taxes, and other fees. Check whether the price requires a membership or an unwanted bundle.
- Compare credible offers: Check reputable sellers rather than relying on a single comparison site. Some comparison sites may rank sellers that pay them, so consider how the results are selected.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says ordinary truthfulness standards apply to sale prices and price comparisons. Its business guidance describes bait-and-switch as advertising a product the seller does not intend to sell in order to steer buyers to something else, usually at a higher price. Those standards are not a simple consumer formula for proving that one particular discount is fake; state and local requirements may also apply. FTC guidance on advertising and marketing
What should you check about an unfamiliar seller?
Search the seller’s name with terms such as “review,” “complaint,” or “scam.” If you found the offer through an ad, search the exact site or URL as well. Look beyond the seller’s own product page, and compare what you find across sources. Reviews can be manipulated, so look at reviewer history and timing instead of relying on the star average alone.

Read the entire listing and identify who is actually selling the item. A polished page, familiar logo, or marketplace listing does not establish that the goods are authentic or that the seller will fulfill the order. HTTPS protects the connection between your browser and a website, but it does not verify that the site or seller is genuine. The FTC notes that it can be difficult to judge review authenticity by appearance alone. FTC advice on online shopping
Understand what marketplace disclosures do—and do not—tell you
The INFORM Consumers Act requires marketplaces to disclose contact information for certain high-volume third-party sellers that meet the law’s thresholds. It does not mean every marketplace seller must display the same information. A disclosure can help you identify and contact a seller, but it is not an FTC certification of that seller or a guarantee about a specific item. FTC information about the INFORM Consumers Act

The FTC lists suspicious marketplace activity that shoppers can report, including an apparently fake or counterfeit item; goods that differ from the order or listing; unexpected deterioration or signs of use; expired items; and branded merchandise offered at unusually low prices. Use the marketplace’s reporting process when you see those warning signs.
When is a low price a warning sign?
An unusually low price—especially for an expensive branded product—deserves extra scrutiny. The FTC warns that such offers can involve counterfeit or misrepresented goods, or goods that never arrive; it also notes that branded items could be stolen. But price alone does not prove fraud. Check the item details, seller history, fulfillment and return terms, and total cost before deciding.

Be especially cautious if the offer’s conditions are hard to find, the seller will not answer reasonable questions, or the advertised item appears unavailable while a more expensive alternative is pushed instead. None of these clues settles the question alone; consider them together with the seller’s identity and the complete offer.
What return terms should you read before buying?
Find the return policy before paying, including any terms that differ for sale or clearance items. Check the return window, who pays return shipping, whether there is a restocking fee, and how refunds are handled. Make sure you know whether you are buying from the marketplace itself or an independent seller, since the listing and seller terms may affect where you need to raise a problem.

How should you pay, and what records should you keep?
The FTC recommends using a credit card when possible. It may give you a way to dispute a charge if merchandise does not arrive, is the wrong item, or is defective, but a dispute is not a guaranteed refund. For the specified billing-error rights, contact the card issuer promptly and send a letter that arrives within 60 days of the first statement showing the error. FTC online shopping guidance

Does the FTC fees rule apply to ordinary online shopping?
No. The FTC’s Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees took effect on May 12, 2025, and covers businesses selling or advertising live-event tickets and short-term lodging, including third-party platforms and resellers. For covered offers, it requires upfront display of the total price, subject to exclusions such as taxes, shipping, and optional add-ons, with the final amount disclosed before payment. It is not a general total-price display rule for ordinary retail products. FTC FAQs about the Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees
