How to Avoid Crypto Presale Scams and Verify a Token Project

Before sending money to a crypto presale, verify its people, contract address, chain and offering terms independently. Learn the warning signs and the limits of on-chain checks.

There is no single check that proves a crypto presale is legitimate. Before sending funds, independently verify the project’s people, token contract and chain; read what the token actually entitles you to and how the proceeds will be used; and treat pressure, guaranteed returns or unexplained claims as reasons to stop. A white paper, audit, registration, contract address or liquidity pool can provide evidence about one part of an offer, but none guarantees that the project is honest or that you will recover your money.

Start with the claims that should make you pause

  • Guaranteed returns or “no risk.” The SEC and CFTC warn that all investments carry risk and investors should question supposedly guaranteed returns. Their 2019 alert uses promised returns of “20-50%” as an example of a scam claim—not as a measured rate, normal return or universal threshold. CFTC: Investor Alert on fraudulent digital-asset websites
  • Urgency. A countdown, claim that a sale is nearly full, or expiring bonus is not a reason to skip verification. Fraudsters may use pressure to keep people from checking an offer.
  • Unsolicited pitches. A direct message, social-media post, group-chat consensus or screenshot of someone’s gains does not verify a project. Links in messages can lead to spoofed sites. CFTC: Digital Asset Frauds
  • Confusing explanations. You should be able to understand what is being sold, what rights the token carries and what the project says it will do with the money. Jargon is not a substitute for clear terms.
  • Unverifiable identities or credentials. Check named founders, companies, partners and registration claims independently. A registration record is relevant to regulatory questions; it is not a safety certification.
  • A demand for another payment. Do not pay a supposed tax, release fee or advance charge just because a promoter says it will unlock profits or recover an earlier payment.

Verify a presale in a deliberate order

  1. Stop the clock. Set aside the countdown, private message or “last chance” pitch. Do not send money while you are still trying to establish what the offer is.
  2. Find the project independently. Reach its site using a domain you can verify from a reliable source or a bookmark you already trust—not a promoter’s link, QR code or message. The CFTC warns that links may lead to spoofed websites.
  3. Match the exact chain and contract address. Compare the address on the independently located project site with the address shown by an explorer for the relevant blockchain. Check the chain as well as the address. A token’s name, ticker, logo or social-media profile does not uniquely identify it. Ethereum.org recommends checking contract addresses because scam tokens can imitate legitimate projects. Ethereum.org: How to identify scam tokens
  4. Read the offering documents. Look for the token’s rights and intended function, sale conditions, supply and distribution terms, stated use of proceeds, development plan and risks. Check whether the documents answer these questions plainly and whether their claims match the pitch. Do not assume rights, protections or a way to recover funds if the terms do not say so. The CFTC advises buyers to understand what is being sold, its risks and fees, and how value could be lost. CFTC: Use Caution When Buying Digital Coins or Tokens
  5. Check who is responsible. Verify the people, company and claimed partners using sources independent of the project’s own materials. Check licensing or registration claims with the relevant regulator. For US securities-related questions, consult current SEC information and the appropriate state regulator; whether a token or offer is subject to securities laws depends on its facts and jurisdiction.
  6. Use on-chain information as supporting evidence. Contract history, holder distribution and liquidity can help you understand visible activity. They cannot establish that promoters’ off-chain claims are true, that trading will remain possible or that investors will receive what was promised.
  7. Decide based on what remains unverified. If important claims cannot be checked or the terms remain unclear, do not send funds. A deadline does not make missing information less material.

What a contract address and liquidity can—and cannot—tell you

Contract address

A contract address identifies a particular token on a particular blockchain, helping distinguish it from another token with a similar name. A matching address on the project’s independently found site and the relevant chain explorer is a useful identity check. It does not authenticate claims about the team, reserves, partnerships, audits, future utility or use of proceeds. Ethereum.org also cautions that there is no authoritative source that establishes token legitimacy across decentralized networks.

Liquidity and other visible activity

A liquidity pool can indicate that trading is possible under current conditions. It does not prove that a presale is fair, that the pool will remain liquid or that the project is trustworthy. Treat liquidity, holder data and transaction history as clues to investigate, not as a pass/fail certificate.

White papers, audits and polished websites

These materials may help you examine a project’s claims, but their existence alone does not prove legitimacy or investment safety. Read the actual terms and verify material claims independently rather than treating presentation quality or a document title as proof.

Compare projects by evidence, not by a single score

There is no approved universal score for crypto presales. If you are comparing offers, assess each across the same questions. A strength in one area does not cancel a serious gap in another.

What to check Useful evidence What it does not establish
People and entities Names, roles, company details and registration claims checked against independent records. That the offer is safe or that a registered entity is free of fraud risk.
Token identity The exact contract address and blockchain match between the project site found independently and a chain explorer. That the project’s off-chain claims are true.
Token rights and purpose Offering documents clearly state what the token is meant to do and what rights, if any, it carries. Rights or protections not stated in the documents.
Sale terms and use of proceeds Clear conditions, distribution information and an explanation of how funds are intended to be used. That the project will follow its stated plan or that you can recover funds.
Material claims Claims independently confirmed rather than repeated only on project channels. Truth of claims that cannot be independently checked.
Sales tactics Time to review the offer without pressure or promises of guaranteed returns. Legitimacy merely because the pitch avoids obvious pressure.
On-chain signals Visible contract activity, holder distribution or liquidity, interpreted cautiously. Honest management, fair trading or future liquidity.

Understand the limits of legal and enforcement information

The CFTC’s token advisory says whether a token is a security depends on the facts and circumstances. This article does not classify any particular token or determine the law for every jurisdiction. For a specific offer, check current regulator records and consult qualified counsel where appropriate. SEC and CFTC guidance cited here is US guidance; Ethereum.org’s token-identification guide is technical education, not regulatory approval of a project.

Regulator announcements about a case should also be read precisely. In a May 20, 2025 press release, the SEC said its complaint alleged that Unicoin and its executives raised more than $100 million from thousands of investors through alleged misrepresentations. That figure describes allegations in a specific charging announcement, not a general measure of presale fraud or a final adjudicated finding. SEC: Unicoin and top executives charged
