Pause before sending money or signing a wallet transaction. Guaranteed returns, urgent pressure, unsolicited investment coaching, fake account-growth displays, and demands for extra money to withdraw are serious warning signs. To check a token, verify its full contract or mint address on the correct network against the issuer’s independently reached official documentation. A familiar name, ticker, wallet balance, listing, or verification badge does not by itself prove that a token is genuine or a safe investment.
How crypto investment scams and fake token listings work
Investment pitches that manufacture trust
A scam may start with a direct message, social-media contact, dating-app conversation, or a person posing as an investment manager. The promoter may promise easy or guaranteed profits, show fake testimonials, or direct you to a convincing website or app. That interface can display invented account growth to encourage larger deposits. When you try to withdraw, access may be blocked or the operator may demand additional fees. The FTC describes these patterns in its investment scam guidance.

Other pitches use celebrity impersonation or fake giveaways. The common thread is an attempt to get you to act before you can independently check the offer. The FTC reported $4.6 billion in losses to investment scams in 2023, more than for any other reported fraud category, in its 2024 report. Separately, the FTC said more than 46,000 people reported over $1 billion in cryptocurrency losses to scams since the start of 2021; those are reported figures, not a complete count of incidents or total losses, in its 2022 data spotlight.

Tokens that borrow a real project’s identity
Anyone deploying a token contract can choose its displayed name and symbol. A fake token can therefore use the same name or ticker as a known project while having a different contract address. A wallet display, apparent holders, transaction activity, or unsolicited airdrop does not authenticate it; token-contract behavior can produce misleading balances or transfers. Ethereum.org explains why the address matters in its guide to identifying scam tokens.

Solana tokens use a mint address, and the network matters too: a genuine token on one network is not automatically the genuine asset on another. Solana’s verification guide says verification identifies the canonical token for a name, symbol, and mint address, but is not an endorsement or a guarantee of value, safety, or legitimacy.
Address poisoning is a separate risk
In address poisoning, an attacker uses a lookalike address in the hope that you later copy it from transaction history. A matching beginning and ending are not enough: compare the entire destination address with one obtained independently from the intended recipient. The FBI describes this risk and prevention steps in its public service announcement.

How to check an investment offer before sending funds
- Stop and investigate independently. Do not let a countdown, “limited” allocation, apparent past profit, or personal relationship rush you. Search the company, person, and token name alongside terms such as “review,” “scam,” “fraud,” or “complaint.” Check more than one result; testimonials are not proof. The FTC warns that unsolicited approaches and pressure to act quickly are common investment-scam tactics in its consumer guidance.
- Identify what you are being offered. Write down the claimed asset, the network, and the full contract address or mint address. Do not treat a token with the same name on another network as interchangeable.
- Find the issuer’s address from a trusted route. Navigate to the project’s known official site or documentation yourself, rather than following a link in a message, advertisement, or unsolicited support reply. Compare every character of the address. Ethereum.org identifies the issuing organization as the best source for the genuine token address in its token-identification guide.
- Cross-check the token on the appropriate explorer. Review the contract or mint details, transaction source, and any labels. Ethereum community explorer labels may help identify tokens already reported, but an explorer is not an authoritative source of truth. Solana Explorer aggregates independent verification providers. These checks can add context; neither makes an investment safe.
- Inspect wallet requests before approving them. If a site, token, contract, or transaction consequence is unclear, do not sign the transaction or grant a token allowance. Scam interfaces can imitate legitimate sites and prompt harmful signatures or allowances, as Ethereum.org explains in its guide.
- Verify the destination separately before a transfer. Compare the full recipient address with the intended recipient’s address from an independently trusted source. Do not rely on an address copied from unverified transaction history or on matching only its first and last characters, as the FBI warns.
How to compare two tokens or listings with similar names
| Check | What to compare | What it can establish |
|---|---|---|
| Network | The blockchain on which the project says the token exists. | Helps prevent treating addresses on different chains as interchangeable. Ethereum.org and Solana guidance: Ethereum and Solana. |
| Full contract or mint address | Every character against the issuer’s independently reached official documentation. | A strong identity check; names and symbols alone are not unique. Ethereum.org and Solana. |
| Address source | Issuer documentation versus a social message, advertisement, or unverified search result. | Helps avoid relying on a link controlled by an impersonator. FTC and Ethereum.org. |
| Explorer and verification signals | Contract or mint details, labels, and verification-provider information. | Useful cross-checks, but labels may be incomplete and verification is not an endorsement. Ethereum.org and Solana. |
| Liquidity and trading behavior | Pool depth and price impact. | Potential risk clues, not proof that a token or investment is genuine or sound. Ethereum.org. |
| Recipient address | The entire intended destination compared with an independently obtained address. | Helps reduce lookalike-address and address-poisoning errors. FBI. |
Warning signs that deserve a pause
- A promise of guaranteed returns, unusually large payouts, or fast profit with little or no risk. The FTC says such claims are a warning sign in its investment scam guidance.
- Pressure to invest immediately, keep the offer secret, or avoid independent checks.
- An unsolicited person—particularly an online romantic contact—offering to manage your crypto or teach you how to invest.
- A polished dashboard showing gains that you cannot independently verify through custody, activity, and a completed withdrawal.
- A demand for an extra payment, tax, or penalty to release funds after you have invested.
- A token using a real project’s name or ticker but a different contract or mint address.
- An airdropped token’s wallet balance or explorer activity being presented as proof of value or authenticity.
- A listing, badge, source-code verification, or apparent liquidity being presented as a guarantee of safety.
- A proposed destination address that resembles a saved one but differs in the middle characters.
What to do if you suspect a scam
- Stop sending funds and do not sign unclear transactions. Do not pay an unexpected person who promises to unlock an account, recover crypto, or release a profitable token. Do not share seed phrases or private keys.
- Preserve useful records. Keep transaction IDs, wallet and recipient addresses, screenshots, site URLs, and messages. These details can help when making a report.
- Contact platforms through verified channels. Use contact information reached independently from the platform’s official site, not details supplied by an unsolicited caller or message. Individual wallet-provider support processes vary.
- Report through official routes. In the United States, the FTC directs consumers to ReportFraud.ftc.gov for investment scams and to its SEC complaint channel for suspected securities-related fraud. The FBI points victims of token impersonation to IC3.gov in its announcement. These routes are U.S.-specific; consumers elsewhere should use the relevant official authorities in their jurisdiction.
