Check who is selling it, the item’s condition and exact specifications, and whether its claims match the manufacturer’s information. No seller label, badge, rating, review, or visual check alone proves authenticity. If an order arrives materially different from its listing, document the differences and use Amazon’s reporting and order-support routes.
Start with the specific offer, not just the product page
An Amazon product detail page can describe an item while individual offers on that page come from different sellers. Before ordering, inspect the offer you plan to buy: seller identity, condition, item details, and any seller-specific return information. A seller disclosure can help you identify who is offering the item; it is not an authenticity certificate.

For many third-party sellers offering new or unused consumer products, the US INFORM Consumers Act requires online marketplaces to disclose specified seller contact information. The FTC explains the law and its scope in its marketplace guide. Disclosure helps with transparency, but it does not establish that a particular product is genuine.

- Confirm the exact model or version, size, edition, color, and condition.
- Check what is included in the box and whether stated compatibility matches your device or setup.
- Look for claims about origin or specifications that matter to you, and compare them with the brand’s product information or another authoritative source when available.
- Review return information for the specific offer rather than assuming every offer has identical terms.
A mismatch or surprising claim is a reason to verify before buying; it does not, by itself, prove that an offer is counterfeit.

Use warning signs as prompts to investigate, not as proof
A price that seems unusually low, awkward or unusual wording, or reviews that appear unrelated to the item can justify a closer look. Official sources cited here do not set a price-gap threshold or validate any review pattern as a counterfeit detector. Ratings and badges also are not guarantees of authenticity.
Reviews can help you identify questions to check, but a high rating does not authenticate a product. The FTC’s Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule, effective October 21, 2024, addresses specified deceptive practices involving reviews and testimonials; it does not make a positive review proof that an item is genuine. Amazon says it blocked over 275 million suspected fake reviews in 2024, a figure Amazon reported in 2025 about its own enforcement activity. “Suspected” is important: this is not an independent estimate of all fake reviews, and it does not show that reviews remaining on the site are genuine. Amazon’s account is in its report on actions against fake review brokers.

Amazon’s US Anti-Counterfeiting Policy prohibits counterfeit products and says sellers and suppliers are responsible for authentic products and for providing authenticity records when requested. That is Amazon’s policy statement, not evidence that every offer has been independently verified or that detection catches every counterfeit. Read Amazon’s Anti-Counterfeiting Policy for its terms.

When Transparency codes can help
Amazon says its Transparency program lets shoppers scan codes on products enrolled in the program to verify them. This can be useful when the item participates and has a valid code, but it is not a general-purpose test for products that are not enrolled. Details are on Amazon’s Transparency page.
If the item you receive seems different from the listing
Keep the order and listing details, then describe specific differences—for example, a different model number, missing included components, or a condition that conflicts with the offer. Concrete details make it easier to explain the issue; a suspicion alone does not establish what happened or guarantee a particular remedy.

- Report a suspicious product or seller: Open the product page, select “Report an issue with this product or seller,” choose the applicable issue, and follow the prompts. Amazon also offers a Customer Service route. See Amazon’s Report Suspicious Activity page for current steps.
- Get help with an order: Go to Your Orders and select the relevant order to see the available support options. Keep your description focused on how the received item differs from the listing.
- Check whether the A-to-z Guarantee applies: For eligible orders from third-party sellers, Amazon lists damaged, defective, or not-as-described items among possible item-condition grounds. Eligibility depends on the order and the guarantee’s current requirements and time limits; a counterfeit complaint does not automatically qualify. Review the live A-to-z Guarantee page and follow the order-specific process.
Understand what reviews and enforcement claims can establish
FTC Chair Lina M. Khan said in the FTC’s August 14, 2024 announcement of its final rule on fake reviews and testimonials: “Fake reviews not only waste people’s time and money, but also pollute the marketplace and divert business away from honest competitors.” The statement describes the FTC’s concern about deceptive reviews; it is not a measured estimate of consumer losses. The announcement is available from the Federal Trade Commission.

The cited consumer and platform materials concern the United States. Seller-transparency rules, remedies, and return rights can differ in other countries, and Amazon’s help pages and program features may change.
