To avoid scams when investing in Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) shares, verify a broker and its specific branch through current PSX and Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) records before sending money or documents. Open and monitor an account in your own name, reject guaranteed-return pitches and paid “insider tips,” and check every trade against broker, CDC and NCCPL records. These steps can reduce fraud and account risks; they cannot prevent ordinary share-price losses.
How do I verify a PSX broker before opening an account?
Do not rely on a familiar company name, logo, social-media profile, app-store listing or a representative’s assurances. Fraudulent platforms may impersonate licensed brokers or regulators. Search the firm in the current PSX brokerage-firms information and confirm its securities-broker license through the SECP licensing information. Verify the particular office or branch you plan to use, not just the firm’s name.

- Find the broker independently in PSX and SECP records; check that its licensed identity and trading-rights information match.
- Confirm the office or branch in official records.
- Call using contact details from the official listing, not a number sent only by a social-media account, messaging group or unsolicited caller.
- Follow only the firm’s verified instructions for payments. Do not transfer funds to an individual or an account that you cannot confirm belongs to the broker.
- Before choosing a service, compare its authorization and registered office, custody and settlement options, fee and risk disclosures, trade alerts and statements, complaint responsiveness, and usability. Do not treat a ranking or an attractive app as evidence that a broker is safer.
SECP warned on 9 December 2025 about unlicensed online platforms, websites and apps that impersonate licensed brokers and attract users with exaggerated or guaranteed returns. Its warning describes misuse of identities belonging to brokers, professionals, public figures and regulators, and cautions against sharing personal or financial information with unknown social or messaging contacts. A November 2024 SECP warning described social-media schemes promoted through Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, including fake advisory or training services and paid tips presented as insider information. Those are dated examples, not a measure of how common scams are today. (SECP, 2025; SECP, 2024)

Which investment offers should make me stop and verify?
- Claims of fixed, guaranteed, risk-free or extraordinary profits.
- Pressure to deposit immediately, join a private group or act on supposed privileged information.
- Paid “insider tips,” hearsay or rumors presented as a sure route to profit.
- Requests to send money or personal or financial information through an unverified account, contact or platform.
These are warning signs, not by themselves proof that a particular person has committed a crime. PSX says securities involve volatility risk and that brokers are not permitted to raise public deposits by promising fixed or guaranteed returns. Review publicly available company information and risks, and make investment decisions in line with your financial position and risk tolerance. Do not buy solely because prices are rising or other people are buying. See PSX investor protection guidance and its investor dos and don’ts.

How can I reduce the risk of unauthorized trades?
Open the account in your own name and operate it yourself where possible. Do not casually share login credentials or grant someone broad authority over your account. If another person must act for you, give the broker written, limited authorization, keep a copy and monitor the account. PSX cautions that a customer may remain responsible for trades made on an authorized person’s instructions, and that delegated authority can be misused. Its Investor Awareness Guide puts the custody rule plainly: “No PSX Broker is allowed under any circumstance to make unauthorized use of Customers’ funds and securities for their own purpose/ benefit.”
How should I monitor my cash, shares and trade records?
Keep your contact and identity details current with your broker, CDC and NCCPL so account notices can reach you. Compare each broker confirmation with the order you actually placed, and review cash balances, share positions, CDC posted reports and transaction alerts. PSX describes NCCPL’s UIN Information System as a way to view trading and settlement information. CDC Investor Account, NCCPL National Custodial Services and Direct Settlement Services are options to investigate for holding or settling assets; they are not blanket requirements or guarantees against loss.

Keep account-opening documents, written instructions, confirmations, statements, alerts and relevant messages. If a contract note is missing or differs from your order, tell the broker promptly: PSX’s guide says to raise it within one trading day. Record when and how you reported it, along with the broker’s response.

- Stop sending money or information to an unverified contact. Preserve messages, payment details, account statements, trade confirmations and screenshots relevant to the issue.
- For a trade discrepancy or broker dispute, contact the broker and retain a record of the complaint and response.
- If a missing or discrepant contract note is not rectified or answered, contact PSX Regulatory Affairs Division. The PSX guide lists [email protected]. Unresolved broker disputes may proceed through PSX’s prescribed complaint and arbitration process.
- You can also consult the SECP investor complaints process. SECP advises raising an issue with the relevant forum first and filing promptly. Complaint rules can set time limits—often two years according to SECP’s general guidance—but the applicable limit may differ, so check the current requirements for your case.
A complaint or report does not guarantee recovery. Keep the full record and act promptly rather than waiting for an informal promise to resolve the matter.

No. PSX’s Centralized Customers Protection Compensation Fund (CCPF), formerly called the Investor Protection Fund, is not insurance against falling share prices, a poor investment choice or every kind of fraud. PSX says a claimant may receive up to PKR 1,000,000 only for an admitted claim against a broker declared a defaulter, under the prescribed process and subject to available funds. The cap is conditional, not a general guarantee. Check the current CCPF terms and claim requirements before relying on it.
