Before you buy clothing online, check the size chart for that exact item and find out whether it lists body measurements or finished-garment measurements. For color, treat the product photos as an estimate: photography, screens, and lighting can all affect what you see. If a mismatch would be costly or inconvenient, read the return terms before checkout.
How do I choose the right size online?
Start with the chart on the exact product page, in the style you plan to order. A size label such as S or M is not a consistent measurement across every product: design, fit, and fabric can affect the finished dimensions. UNIQLO’s US and Singapore customer guidance both describe product-specific measurement information; those conventions are useful examples, not universal rules for all retailers.

Check what the chart measures before comparing numbers. A body-size chart describes the shopper; a finished-product chart describes the garment. Use your body measurements with a body-size chart. If the listing gives finished-garment measurements, compare them with a similar item you own—not directly with your body circumference.
Take and compare measurements
- Open the exact item’s size chart and read its measurement notes. Check whether the numbers refer to your body or to the garment.
- If the chart uses body measurements, measure the relevant parts of your body and compare those values with the chart. A flexible measuring tape can help.
- If it gives garment measurements, lay a similar piece of clothing flat and compare like with like—for example, chest width with chest width, body length with body length, or inseam with inseam where listed.
- Review the stated fit, such as slim, regular, or oversized, along with any relevant design or fabric notes. Focus on the dimensions that matter for that item rather than assuming the same letter size will fit the same across brands or styles.
- If the chart or listing leaves an important question unresolved, contact the seller before ordering. Measurements can help you make a more informed choice, but they cannot guarantee fit.

Why can the color look different in person?
A product photo is not a guarantee of the item’s exact real-world shade. Photography and lighting affect the image, while display settings and the light in which you view the screen can affect how that image appears. Different devices may render the same photo differently. T-Shirt.ca describes these factors in its seller support article, How accurate are the garment colours on your website?
Check the listing’s available product views and color description, and ask the seller about the shade if a close match matters—for example, when coordinating an item with something you already own. A seller may offer a sample, but that option is not practical or available for every product. Changing your screen settings cannot reliably reveal the exact color the item will have in person.

What should I check before checkout?
Returns are a fallback, not a way to ensure a size or color will match. Before placing the order, check the delivery estimate and the return and refund terms for that seller and item. Deadlines, return-shipping costs, and restocking fees can vary. The FTC advises online shoppers to know when an item will ship and what to do if they want to return it in What to know before you buy something online.
