If you spot a problem later, keep the receipt and contact the store promptly. Whether you qualify for a free item, a discount, or another remedy depends on your location, the kind of error, and sometimes the retailer’s own policy.
How to catch an error while scanning
Keep unscanned items separate from scanned ones so you can track what has entered the cart. After each scan, check that the screen shows the intended product, a sensible price, and the right quantity. Self-checkout machines do not all work the same way, and you should not assume a machine will detect a duplicate scan.
- For produce or items without a standard barcode, follow the on-screen instructions and check that you selected the right product and quantity.
- Pay particular attention to sale items, multi-buy offers, and expensive products. A promotion may not be reflected in the register; compare the displayed price with the store’s advertisement. The Federal Trade Commission’s 1998 Price Check II report recommends watching prices as they appear and asking for an adjustment before paying.
- If the display is unclear or an item will not scan, pause and ask an attendant for help rather than guessing or scanning it again.
What to check before paying
Before completing payment, compare the on-screen list and quantities with the items you intend to buy. Look for duplicate lines, missing items, unfamiliar products, unexpected prices, and prompts that affect the total. Ask an attendant to review a suspected error before paying; the available correction options depend on the store and its checkout system.
Not every prompt means something has gone wrong. Some systems ask shoppers to weigh certain produce, confirm an age-restricted purchase, or enter the number of bags used. For example, Walmart’s Mobile Scan & Go terms tell users who cannot scan an item to consult an associate so it appears in the cart or on the receipt, and describe weighing some produce. Those are Walmart-specific instructions, not universal self-checkout rules.

What to do if an item scans twice or the price is wrong
If you notice a duplicate scan, wrong item, or unexpected price before payment, stop and ask the attendant to correct the transaction. Check the updated screen before paying. If the issue is a sale-price mismatch, show the attendant the advertisement or shelf price if it is available.
If you discover the error after paying, keep the receipt and contact the store’s customer-service desk or manager promptly. Identify the item, the price charged, the price you expected, and the transaction date. The FTC advises checking receipts even after leaving the checkout line; correcting an error later may still be possible, though it can take more effort.
For a price dispute, preserve the receipt and, if practical, a record of the advertised or shelf price while it is still accessible. These details can help explain the discrepancy, but keeping evidence does not guarantee a particular remedy.

Does a store have to give you the item free?
There is no universal rule that a scan error entitles a shopper to a free item or a bonus. The answer depends on the jurisdiction, the error type, and whether the retailer has a voluntary price-guarantee policy. A duplicate quantity, a wrong barcode, and a price higher than an advertised price may be treated differently.

Florida
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says a business has no general legal obligation in Florida to provide an item free or at a discount when it scans incorrectly. Some businesses do have voluntary policies that reward customers for scanning errors. Check the retailer’s policy rather than assuming a particular outcome.
Michigan
Michigan’s Scanner Law describes a possible remedy when a qualifying transaction is complete and the shopper has a receipt identifying the item and the price charged. The shopper must notify the seller within 30 days of the transaction. The state Attorney General’s current Scanner Error Bill of Rights says the seller may owe a refund of the difference plus a bonus of ten times that difference, subject to a $1 minimum and $5 maximum, within two days of notice. The page also describes potential court remedies if the seller does not provide the specified refund and bonus. These terms are Michigan-specific; check the current state guidance for eligibility and details.

Québec
Québec’s Office de la protection du consommateur says its Price Accuracy Policy applies at self-serve checkouts. For a qualifying item advertised at $15 or less, the merchant gives it free; if it is advertised above $15, the merchant sells it at the advertised price with an additional $15 discount. The policy includes exclusions and distinguishes some cases, including certain barcode errors. See the Office’s Price Accuracy Policy for its scope and complaint options.

An unfamiliar charge or prompt is not automatically an error. For instance, in England, retailers must charge at least 10 pence including VAT for qualifying single-use plastic carrier bags. Government guidance says self-checkouts should collect the charge, for example by asking how many bags were used. The rule has scope limits and exemptions and should not be assumed to apply elsewhere in the UK or in other countries; check the England carrier bag charge guidance.

If the store will not correct a charge, begin with its customer-service desk or manager and keep a record of the response. For a recurring or apparently systematic scanner issue, the next step depends on where you live. The FTC’s report points shoppers toward state or local consumer-protection and weights-and-measures officials; Québec shoppers can complain to the Office de la protection du consommateur. Check your relevant official consumer-protection agency for the right local route.
