How to Avoid a Gap in Utility Service When Moving

Avoid a utility gap by checking providers for both addresses, scheduling new service and old-service end dates separately, and confirming each account’s status.

To avoid a utility-service gap when you move, arrange a start date at the new address and an end date at the old address with each provider separately. Confirm both dates directly with the providers, since service areas, notice periods and transfer procedures vary. A transfer does not necessarily close the old account, and the same provider may keep service active at both homes for a short overlap.

Make a separate plan for every utility

List electricity, natural gas, water and sewer, trash, and internet or other telecommunications separately. Different companies—or a landlord, property manager, or municipality—may handle them, and responsibility can differ by service. If you rent, check the lease to see what is included and who must arrange the rest.

First find out which providers serve the destination address. Do not assume the provider at your current home also serves the new one, or that the previous occupant’s account arrangement will continue. Ask each provider what information it needs, when service can begin, and whether an appointment or access to a meter or other equipment is required.

Set the new start date and old end date explicitly

Contact each provider and give it the date you need service at the new address. Separately state when service at the old address should end. Ask whether the provider can serve both addresses temporarily, what each account will cover during any overlap, and how and when the old account will close.

Procedures and lead times are provider-specific. For example, Consumers Energy says its customers can request a move start, stop, or transfer within 30 days of the move, and notes that a transfer may leave power or gas on at both addresses. EPCOR’s Edmonton guidance asks for at least three business days’ notice; Encor customers need at least five business days. EPCOR says overlap between properties is common. These are examples for those providers and customer contexts, not universal deadlines. Ask your own providers for their current requirements.

Use this move-day sequence

  1. As soon as you know the move dates: identify the providers for both addresses and contact each one. Missouri’s Public Service Commission advises customers to notify their utility companies as soon as possible and not to rely on someone else to take service out of their name: Missouri Public Service Commission moving guidance.
  2. When arranging service: provide the old-address stop date and new-address start date separately. Ask about notice requirements, appointments, account setup, any deposit or other required step, and temporary service at both addresses. Request a confirmation number or written confirmation.
  3. On move-out day: record or photograph final meter readings where applicable, along with the date. Send the reading as the provider directs, and provide a forwarding address for the final bill. Missouri’s regulator recommends requesting final readings and keeping a record of provider contacts.
  4. When you take possession of the new home: record the meter readings there where applicable and submit them with your details as the supplier instructs. Northern Ireland’s Utility Regulator advises new occupants to contact the existing supplier with a reading and their details to reduce the risk of being billed for a previous occupant’s energy use: Utility Regulator Northern Ireland moving-home guidance.
  5. After the move: check that the new accounts are active and that the old accounts have actually closed on the agreed dates. Follow up on any missing confirmation or final bill.

Keep a simple record of each provider’s contact details, the date and time of each conversation, the representative’s name if available, the agreed dates, and confirmation numbers. This makes it easier to resolve a mismatch between the requested and recorded service dates.

Coordinate the handoff for a rental or home sale

For a rental, verify which services are included and whether the tenant or owner is responsible for each account under the lease. For a purchase or sale, coordinate with the other party and the providers, but make sure your own account instructions are confirmed directly with each provider.

There is no universal shutoff buffer for a sale. Opendoor’s May 29, 2026 help page recommends that sellers in its process schedule shutoff three days after closing so a buyer has time to set up service. That is a company-specific suggestion, not a general rule; use the dates agreed for your transaction and confirmed by the providers: Opendoor utility-transfer guidance.

If service or billing does not match the plan

  • The new home has no service: contact the provider for that address, confirm the requested start date and account status, and ask whether an appointment, access, or another setup step is outstanding.
  • The old account is still active: contact the old provider with your confirmed stop date and request an explanation and account closure. Do not assume the new occupant or property owner has taken the account out of your name.
  • You receive a bill that may cover an earlier occupant: contact the supplier, give it your move-in date and the reading you recorded, and ask it to check the account period and meter details.
  • The provider cannot meet your requested dates: ask what earliest start or stop date it can confirm and whether a temporary overlap or another arrangement is available. Procedures and eligibility depend on the provider and location.
