Automatically turn support conversations into tickets by choosing the simplest workflow that connects the conversation’s source to the help desk that should own the work: a native rule, a prebuilt integration, a team-chat command, or a custom API integration. Before enabling it, define which messages qualify, what ticket type and fields are needed, how much conversation history must carry over, and whether replies must sync back to the original channel.
Choose an implementation route
The right route depends on where support messages arrive and where agents should work. These are implementation patterns, not a ranking of product quality.

| Route | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Native help-desk automation | Conversations already arrive in the support platform, and rules can identify which ones should become tickets. | Supported channels, trigger scope and precedence, ticket types, and whether required fields are populated. Intercom’s email setting applies to the first inbound email; Workflows allow broader conditions. Intercom’s conversion guide. |
| Prebuilt platform integration | Messages are in one supported product, but tickets should be created in another without custom development. | Confirm the integration’s direction and what context it transfers. Intercom documents creating Freshdesk tickets from conversations; importing historical Freshdesk tickets into Intercom as Inbox Conversations through the Workspace UI is unavailable. Intercom Freshdesk app details. |
| Team-chat command | Employees discuss support in Slack, and agents should deliberately convert selected discussions into help-desk work. | Check history and file handling. Freshdesk says its Slack command can include up to 200 prior messages; files and snippets are linked from Slack. Freshdesk’s Slack integration guide. |
| Custom API and webhooks | A proprietary messaging channel or complex routing needs control over identity, data mapping, handoff, or reply synchronization. | Plan authentication, durable conversation-ID mapping, agent handoff, webhook processing, monitoring, and error recovery. Zendesk’s documented flow requires handing control to Agent Workspace to trigger ticket creation in the agent workflow. Zendesk’s receiving-messages documentation. |
Across all routes, compare the source channel, destination and ticket type, history retention, field mapping, conditional routing, bidirectional replies, human handoff, setup and maintenance effort, and visibility into failures. These are practical workflow checks, not vendor performance scores.
Prepare the ticket workflow before switching it on
Automation is only useful if the resulting ticket gives the receiving team enough information to act. Decide what qualifies as support work and what the ticket must contain before configuring a rule or integration.

- Choose qualifying conversations. Specify the channels and message conditions that should create tickets. Avoid converting every internal discussion or low-value message into agent work.
- Choose the system of record. Decide which help desk owns assignment, status, customer visibility, and resolution. A connector that creates a ticket in the wrong direction will not solve the workflow.
- Define ticket types and fields. Set the ticket type, required fields, owner or team routing, and any customer-visible settings. Check whether the chosen automation actually supplies every required value.
- Map conversation context. Identify which source values should populate the subject or title, description, contact identity, timestamps, priority or category, and attachment references. Confirm how much history transfers and whether files are copied or linked.
- Decide how replies and handoffs work. If agents need to answer from the help desk, determine whether their replies return to the original channel and how a conversation is handed to a human responder.
- Plan for duplicates and failures. Determine how repeated events should be recognized, how failed creation or handoff will be noticed, and what manual fallback agents should use. Idempotency and error handling depend on the selected platform and configuration.
Use native Intercom conversion when conversations already arrive there
Intercom documents two native approaches: an email setting for first inbound emails and a Workflow for eligible conversation types with more specific conditions. Choose based on the source and the degree of filtering required.
Convert first inbound emails with the email setting
- In Intercom, go to Settings > Channels > Email > Email Settings.
- Enable the setting to automatically convert the first inbound email in a conversation into a Customer ticket.
- Test a new inbound email and inspect the resulting ticket’s description and fields.
The email body becomes the ticket description. Replies to outbound email messages do not trigger ticket creation. Automatically created tickets do not receive attributes even when those attributes are required, and company ticket fields are not populated for customer-portal use. Intercom states: “Automatically created tickets won’t have attributes filled in, even if they are required.” Intercom Help’s conversion guide.
Use a Workflow for other eligible conversations or conditions
- Create a Workflow using the Customer sends their first message trigger.
- Add a Convert to ticket step and choose the ticket type.
- Use channel selection and conditional branches to narrow which conversations convert. For example, an email-content condition can select a ticket type.
- Test each intended channel and condition, then inspect ticket fields and routing.
If both the email toggle and Workflow conversion are enabled, the Workflow takes precedence. The conversion action cannot be used in a Workflow targeting phone calls. Intercom documents these behaviors in its auto-convert guide.
Connect Intercom conversations to Freshdesk
Intercom’s Freshdesk app can create Freshdesk tickets from Intercom conversations, show recent customer tickets in context, and provide knowledge-base access. This is the relevant prebuilt route when Intercom is where the conversation begins and Freshdesk is where the ticket should be handled.
Confirm the created Freshdesk ticket contains the context agents need, and test the actual direction of ticket creation. The app does not make historical Freshdesk ticket history available as Intercom Inbox Conversations through the Workspace UI. See Intercom’s Freshdesk app documentation.

Create a Freshdesk ticket from Slack
Freshdesk’s Slack integration supports deliberate ticket creation from a public or private channel or a direct message. An administrator must configure the integration, and agents must authorize it.
- Have a Freshdesk administrator configure the Slack integration.
- Authorize the integration as an agent in the relevant Slack workspace.
- In the Slack channel or DM containing the support discussion, use the Freshdesk slash command to create a ticket and provide a smaller history count if needed.
- Wait for the processing queue: Freshdesk says Slack sends a request notification, followed by a second notification when ticket creation completes.
- Open the ticket and check its copied conversation text and Slack-linked files or snippets.
By default, up to 200 preceding messages are included. Only conversation text is copied; files and snippets are clickable links to Slack rather than copied into the ticket. The message limit is a product behavior, not a measure of support outcomes. Details are in Freshdesk’s Slack integration guide.

Use the programmable-conversation route when a third-party messaging channel needs to create Zendesk conversations and agent replies need to travel back to that channel. Zendesk’s documented pattern is more than simply posting incoming text: it connects a messaging user and conversation to agent handling.
- Create a Zendesk messaging user and conversation for the third-party participant.
- Forward each incoming third-party message through the Conversations API and store the returned conversation ID. Reuse that ID for subsequent messages so they stay attached to the same conversation.
- Pass control to Agent Workspace using
integrationType: zd:agentWorkspacewhen Zendesk agents should handle the conversation and the Zendesk agent workflow should create the ticket. - Subscribe to the
conversation:messagewebhook and deliver agent replies back to the original messaging channel. - Test identity matching, repeated events, agent handoff, reply delivery, and failed API or webhook requests in the actual integration.
Zendesk Developer Docs explains that “to have Zendesk agents handle the conversation (and to trigger ticket creation in the Zendesk agent workflow), your integration needs to pass control of the conversation to Zendesk Agent Workspace (integrationType: zd:agentWorkspace).” Follow the Zendesk receiving-messages documentation for the programmable flow. Zendesk also supports simpler intake: email sent to a configured support address becomes tickets, and developers can create tickets through its API. Its channel documentation describes adding integrations for additional platforms.
Test and roll out safely
Test the exact account configuration rather than assuming that a successful rule or API request means the operational workflow is complete.

- Use a long conversation to inspect history limits, and check how attachments, snippets, or links appear.
- Test a missing or unknown user and a ticket with required fields to expose identity or field-mapping gaps.
- Confirm the ticket is visible to the intended agents and, where applicable, to the customer.
- Test failed authorization, configuration, handoff, or webhook delivery; identify how an agent can spot and recover the failure.
- Check duplicate creation when the same event is retried or a conversation is acted on more than once.
Platform-specific duplicate handling and error recovery are not established by the cited product guides, so treat them as implementation checks for the chosen configuration rather than assumed capabilities.

When an API is more appropriate than a built-in rule
Native automation is a good starting point when messages already live in the help desk and its triggers and fields cover the workflow. A prebuilt app or Slack command avoids custom development when it supports the required direction and context. An API becomes relevant when a proprietary channel, nonstandard routing, deliberate agent handoff, structured mapping, or synchronized replies cannot be handled by those options.
For Intercom custom conversion, the documented endpoint is POST /conversations/{conversation_id}/convert. It requires ticket_type_id, accepts optional ticket state and attributes, and uses bearer authentication plus an Intercom-Version header. At the documentation access date of October 4, 2026, the reference listed 2.16 as its default version; check the current API reference when implementing. Default title and description attributes use _default_title_ and _default_description_, and list fields expect the list-item ID. See Intercom’s conversation conversion API reference.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I automatically turn support conversations into tickets?
Use a native help-desk rule if the conversations already arrive in that platform; otherwise use a prebuilt connector, a team-chat command, or an API integration. Define qualifying messages, ticket type and fields, transferred context, routing, and reply behavior before enabling creation.
Can I create Freshdesk tickets from Slack messages?
Yes. Freshdesk’s Slack integration supports ticket creation from public or private channels and direct messages after administrator configuration and agent authorization. Its default history is up to 200 prior messages; files and snippets are linked from Slack.

Can Intercom automatically convert conversations into tickets?
Yes. Intercom documents an email setting for the first inbound email and Workflow conversion for other eligible conversation types and conditions. Automatically created tickets do not receive attributes, even if required; the Workflow takes precedence when both methods are enabled.
Can Intercom conversations create Freshdesk tickets?
Yes. Intercom’s Freshdesk app can create Freshdesk tickets from Intercom conversations. The app also shows recent customer tickets in context and provides knowledge-base access; historical Freshdesk tickets cannot be imported as Inbox Conversations through the Workspace UI.
Does creating a Zendesk conversation automatically create a ticket?
For Zendesk’s documented programmable messaging workflow, the integration must pass control to Agent Workspace using integrationType: zd:agentWorkspace for agents to handle the conversation and trigger ticket creation in the agent workflow.
Will every support integration copy the full conversation and attachments?
No universal behavior is established. For example, Freshdesk’s Slack integration includes up to 200 prior messages by default, copies conversation text, and links files and snippets from Slack. Check the specific integration’s history and attachment behavior.
