First decide whether you need an image of your local desktop or a public webpage: the former needs access to the active desktop session, while the latter can be rendered from a URL by a screenshot service. Run a test under the same login, lock, sleep, and display conditions you expect to use.
Choose what you need to capture

A URL-rendering service captures a webpage, not the private desktop in front of you. A scheduler triggers the work; it does not itself take the screenshot.

Schedule a local desktop screenshot on Windows
Windows Task Scheduler and schtasks can start programs on recurring schedules. Microsoft documents minute-based, hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly schedules, as well as one-time, startup, logon, and idle triggers. The task needs appropriate permissions, which depend on what it runs. See Microsoft’s schtasks documentation and Task Scheduler documentation.

Confirm that it can capture the intended screen, window, or region and save an image to a chosen folder. The Windows scheduler can launch a program, but it does not provide the screenshot-capture capability.
- Make paths explicit. Use the full path to the executable and output folder. If the script depends on a working directory, set it in the task rather than relying on the directory used by an interactive terminal.
- Create the recurring task. In Task Scheduler, create a task with a time trigger and an action that starts the capture program or script. Select the recurrence interval you need and configure the task’s account and permissions for that program.
- Run it once manually. Use Task Scheduler’s Run action, then inspect the saved image. Confirm it contains the intended display and that the output path and filename are correct.
- Check the next scheduled run. Inspect Task Scheduler’s history and the resulting file rather than assuming a saved task has captured successfully.
Do not assume an interactive desktop capture will work while the computer is locked, the user is logged out, the computer is asleep, or multiple displays are configured. Microsoft’s scheduler documentation establishes that tasks can be triggered; it does not guarantee that every capture program can see the desired desktop in those states. Test the exact conditions that matter to you.

Schedule a desktop screenshot on macOS
Press Shift-Command-5 to open the built-in Screenshot panel. Apple’s guide describes capturing the whole screen, a window, or a selected area, choosing where to save the image, and setting a timer delay. That delay is for a capture that starts after a wait; Apple does not describe it as a recurring schedule. For recurring captures, you need a separate automation mechanism or software that explicitly supports repeats. Use a scheduled command for public webpages
If you want recurring images of a public URL rather than your desktop, use a webpage screenshot tool or API and have a scheduler run it. Browshot documents a Windows command-line tool, browshot-cmd.exe, that connects to its screenshot API and can be run with Windows Task Scheduler. Its documented options include the URL, page or screen size, image format, capture count, and interval between repeated captures. See Browshot’s Windows tool documentation.

A hosted alternative is to let an external scheduler—such as Windows Task Scheduler, cron, or a cloud scheduler—call a URL screenshot API on each run, then store the returned image where you want it. Make the schedule dependable
- Verify the image, not just the task. A successful scheduler trigger does not prove that a valid screenshot was produced. Check that the file exists, opens, and shows the expected content.
- Test session conditions. For desktop capture, test while logged in and under the intended locked, asleep, or multi-display conditions. Capture behavior depends on the utility and session; a scheduled launch alone does not establish desktop access.
- Use durable paths and permissions. Ensure the task’s account can run the program and write to its output folder. Prefer fully qualified paths to reduce failures caused by a different environment from your terminal.
- Account for changing webpages. A URL may load differently over time, and its banners or content can change. Check several scheduled outputs if consistency matters.
- Plan for scale and upkeep. One local task is simple, but many URLs require managing commands or API calls, credentials, output storage, and any service limits or charges.
Troubleshooting scheduled screenshots
The task runs, but no image appears
Check Task Scheduler history, the task’s account and permissions, the executable path, the working directory, and write access to the output folder. Run the same command manually under the account used by the task and compare its result.

The image is blank or shows the wrong display
For desktop captures, verify the selected screen or capture region and test with the user logged in. Repeat the test in the relevant lock, sleep, and multi-monitor states; the scheduler’s ability to start a program does not guarantee that the program can capture a desktop in every session state.
The Mac timer works only once
The Screenshot panel’s timer is a one-time delay, not a documented repeating schedule. Set up a separate recurring automation or use a tool that supports scheduled repeats.

A webpage capture fails or differs from what you see
Confirm the URL is publicly reachable from the capture environment, check network access and credentials, and inspect the returned file. A hosted URL renderer is not a way to capture pages that exist only on your private desktop.
