How to Automatically Set FTP File Permissions on Linux

Learn how Linux calculates FTP upload modes and configure vsftpd or ProFTPD so new files and directories receive predictable permissions, ownership, group inheritance, and secure collaboration access.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set FTP permissions at upload time by configuring the daemon’s creation mode and umask, then make the destination directory’s owner, group, setgid bit, and (when necessary) default ACL agree with that policy. In vsftpd, the main settings are file_open_mode, local_umask, and anon_umask. In ProFTPD, use Umask, optionally supplying separate file and directory masks.

A typical least-privilege policy is 0666 plus a 0027 umask: uploaded regular files become 0640, while directories created from the normal 0777 directory base become 0750. Ownership is a separate decision; use a correctly owned group, the directory setgid bit, and default ACLs for collaboration rather than making everything world-writable.

How Linux decides an FTP upload’s permissions

An FTP daemon eventually calls Linux file-creation system calls such as open() for a regular file or mkdir() for a directory. The daemon supplies a requested mode, and the process umask removes permission bits from that request. The Linux man-pages project describes the umask as the mask used by open(2), mkdir(2), and other creation calls to modify permissions placed on new objects.

For an ordinary file, the conventional requested base mode is 0666; regular files do not receive execute bits from that base. For a directory, the conventional base is 0777, because directories need execute (search/traverse) permission to be usable. The calculation is bitwise, not decimal subtraction:

Object Requested base Umask Result Meaning
Regular file 0666 0022 0644 Owner read/write; group and others read
Regular file 0666 0027 0640 Owner read/write; group read; no access for others
Directory 0777 0022 0755 Owner full access; group and others read/search
Directory 0777 0027 0750 Owner full access; group read/search; no access for others

The familiar examples, 0666 & ~0022 = 0644 and 0777 & ~0022 = 0755, are documented in Linux and ProFTPD permission guidance. A parent directory’s default ACL can replace the normal umask calculation, so the arithmetic predicts the result only when no applicable default ACL changes it.

Choose the access policy before editing the daemon

Write down who must read, modify, and delete uploads. A private drop box, a single local FTP account, and a team directory need different modes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Private uploads: use a restrictive umask such as 0077, giving the creating account exclusive access unless a separate administrator policy grants more.
  • One account uploads and a service reads: use a dedicated group and a group-readable mode such as 0640; make sure the reader can traverse every parent directory.
  • Several users collaborate: use a group-owned directory with the setgid bit, then add a default ACL if the required reader/writer set cannot be expressed with the traditional owner/group/other bits.
  • Anonymous intake: isolate the directory and account from normal users. Anonymous settings must be configured separately from local-user settings.

Do not choose a broad mode first and try to repair it later. The narrowest daemon mask that supports the workflow reduces the chance that a newly uploaded object is briefly exposed before a post-upload process runs.

Configure vsftpd for automatic permissions

vsftpd distinguishes local-user uploads from anonymous uploads. Its reference documents octal syntax, defaults, and the ownership controls for anonymous files. Edit the configuration file used by the running service, commonly /etc/vsftpd.conf, and keep a backup before changing it.

A least-privilege local-user baseline

# Regular files request 0666; the umask removes group/other write and other access.
file_open_mode=0666
local_umask=0027

# Do not allow users to change modes through SITE CHMOD unless required.
chmod_enable=NO

With file_open_mode=0666 and local_umask=0027, a normal local-user upload generally starts as 0640. A directory created through FTP normally starts from the directory base and is affected by the daemon’s directory handling, so verify it rather than assuming that a file result also describes directories. A parent default ACL or a later hook can change either result.

file_open_mode is the mode vsftpd requests for uploaded files; local_umask masks that request for authenticated local users. Neither setting changes ownership, grants access to a group that cannot traverse the path, or overrides a default ACL that applies at the parent directory.

Anonymous uploads use a different branch

# Apply only when anonymous uploads are intentionally enabled.
anon_umask=0077

Do not assume that changing local_umask changes anonymous uploads. Test each account type separately. An anonymous drop box should normally use a dedicated directory with no access from unrelated users, and the FTP service should be prevented from exposing uploaded content through directory listings or downloads unless that is an explicit requirement.

Anonymous ownership and forced mode

vsftpd also documents chown_uploads, chown_username, and chown_upload_mode. When anonymous uploads are enabled, these options can transfer ownership to a specified local account and force a mode for the uploaded object. Use them only with a dedicated, non-login account and an isolated directory. A forced mode is not a replacement for directory ownership, parent traversal permissions, or a carefully chosen anonymous umask.

Apply and test the change

  1. Record which configuration file and service unit are active. Some distributions include additional files or start more than one vsftpd instance.
  2. Save the existing configuration, then add or update the directives without creating duplicate conflicting entries.
  3. Check the configuration for syntax errors using the distribution’s service validation facilities, if provided.
  4. Restart the service with the service manager, for example sudo systemctl restart vsftpd, then check sudo systemctl status vsftpd. A reload is appropriate only when the installed unit and daemon support it.
  5. Upload one uniquely named regular file as a local user. Separately create a directory through FTP, and repeat with an anonymous account if that feature is enabled.
  6. Inspect the results on the Linux host before changing anything with a post-upload job.

Configure ProFTPD with file and directory masks

ProFTPD’s Umask directive sets the mask applied to newly created files and directories. It accepts an octal file mask and an optional directory mask and can be placed in the applicable server configuration context, such as the main server, <Global>, <VirtualHost>, <Anonymous>, or a directory scope.

# Files: 0666 & ~0027 = 0640
# Directories: 0777 & ~0027 = 0750
Umask 0027 0027

ProFTPD documents 0666 as its normal file base and 0777 as its normal directory base. Its umask HOWTO gives the corresponding examples 0644 = 0666 - 0022 and 0755 = 0777 - 0022; the operation is conventionally described as masking permission bits, not as ordinary arithmetic subtraction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The first value controls files and the second controls directories. If your team needs group-writable directories but must keep files group-read-only, use different masks and verify the resulting access policy. ProFTPD will not add execute permission to an uploaded regular file merely because the directory mask contains execute bits. If an executable upload is genuinely required, handle it in a controlled post-upload process or narrowly authorized SITE CHMOD operation.

Restrict SITE CHMOD

Changing a mode after upload can undermine the defaults. If users do not need to alter permissions, deny the FTP command in the relevant ProFTPD context:

</Limit>

If a documented workflow requires it, allow the command only to the smallest administrative set and audit the resulting files. The daemon’s umask should still produce a safe initial state.

Reload and verify ProFTPD

  1. Confirm which ProFTPD configuration and virtual host apply to the login account.
  2. Place Umask in that context, taking care not to let a more specific context override it unexpectedly.
  3. Use the distribution’s ProFTPD configuration test, when available, before reloading.
  4. Reload or restart the service using its service manager.
  5. Test a file and a directory for every relevant login class, including an anonymous context if configured.

Make ownership and group inheritance match the mode

Permission bits do not determine ownership. Linux assigns the new file’s owner to the process that creates it. The group is selected according to filesystem and parent-directory rules, including the setgid bit and, on some filesystems, mount behavior. ProFTPD states that it does not override normal Unix filesystem permissions, so the effective FTP account must own the upload directory or have the required group access and search permission.

Create a shared, setgid upload directory

The following is an example design. Substitute the actual daemon account and users on your host; ftpuser, ftpwriters, alice, and bob are illustrative names.

sudo groupadd --system ftpwriters
sudo usermod -aG ftpwriters alice
sudo usermod -aG ftpwriters bob
sudo install -d -o ftpuser -g ftpwriters -m 2770 /srv/ftp/incoming

The leading 2 in 2770 is the setgid bit. New files and directories created there inherit the directory’s group, subject to filesystem rules. Setgid does not itself grant write permission: the group mode must include write, and every relevant user must actually be a member of the group. Users may need to log in again before a new supplementary group is present.

Keep the directory’s parent components searchable. A user can have the correct mode on /srv/ftp/incoming and still receive “permission denied” if it cannot execute (traverse) /srv or another parent.

Use a default ACL when group bits are not enough

A default ACL expresses the permissions new children should receive even when one traditional group entry cannot represent all readers and writers. For example:

sudo setfacl -m g:ftpwriters:rwx /srv/ftp/incoming
sudo setfacl -m d:u::rwx,d:g::rwx,d:g:ftpwriters:rwx,d:m::rwx,d:o::--- /srv/ftp/incoming

The ACL mask entry (d:m::rwx) limits the effective permissions of named users, named groups, and the owning group. Inspect the completed ACL rather than inferring it from the mode string. A default ACL can supersede the ordinary umask calculation, which is why a file may not match the simple 0666 & ~umask prediction.

Verify mode, owner, group, and path traversal

Always test the object created by the daemon, not a file you manually chmodded afterward. On the host, use:

stat -c '%A %a %U %G %n' /srv/ftp/incoming/test-upload.bin
namei -l /srv/ftp/incoming/test-upload.bin
getfacl /srv/ftp/incoming/test-upload.bin

stat displays the symbolic mode, numeric mode, owner, group, and name. namei -l shows every parent component and its traversal permissions. getfacl reveals access and default ACL entries, including an effective-permission mask that may not be obvious from ls -l.

  1. Write down the daemon, configuration context, login account, and destination path used for the test.
  2. Upload a uniquely named regular file.
  3. Create a directory through FTP and place a second file inside it.
  4. Run the three inspection commands on all test objects.
  5. Check ownership and group membership as the intended local readers and writers, not only as root.
  6. Review service logs if the owner, mode, or destination differs from the configured policy.

Troubleshoot unexpected FTP permissions

Files are 0600 instead of the expected group-readable mode

A 0600 result usually indicates a restrictive umask such as 0077, a lower requested mode, a parent default ACL, or a post-upload process that called chmod. Confirm whether the login used the local or anonymous branch, inspect getfacl, and check service logs and scheduled jobs.

Files are 0644 when you configured 0027

The active context may still use the common 0022 umask, or the edited file may not be the one read by the running service. Verify the service unit, included configuration files, virtual-host or anonymous scope, and the daemon’s effective process. A default ACL can also produce a result different from the expected mask arithmetic.

Directories are not writable by the collaboration group

Setgid controls inherited group ownership, not group write permission. Use a directory mode whose group field includes write, ensure the FTP account belongs to the group, and check every parent directory for traversal. If different groups need different access, use a carefully designed default ACL instead of chmod 777.

The owner is an unexpected system account

Ownership follows the creating process unless vsftpd’s anonymous-upload ownership options deliberately change it. Confirm which account actually performed the upload, whether chown_uploads is enabled, and whether a post-upload hook runs chown. Remember that chown changes ownership; it does not repair an unsuitable creation mask.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FTP can list a directory but cannot create a file

Listing and creation require different permissions. The account needs write and execute permission on the destination directory, plus execute permission on each parent. Examine the complete path with namei -l and the ACL with getfacl.

SITE CHMOD is rejected or changes are too broad

vsftpd rejects the command when chmod_enable=NO. ProFTPD may deny it through a <Limit SITE_CHMOD> policy. That is normally safer: use daemon defaults, group ownership, setgid, and ACLs for routine access rather than allowing every FTP user to rewrite modes.

Uploaded files unexpectedly have execute bits

Do not set file_open_mode=0777 to make directories accessible; that requests execute bits for regular files and creates an unsafe baseline. Regular-file creation normally starts at 0666. Find any post-upload chmod or deployment process that adds execute permission, and reserve executability for a controlled, separately authorized step.

Compare the available control layers

Control layer What it controls Best use What it does not solve
vsftpd file_open_mode Requested mode for local uploaded files Set a safe file baseline Ownership, parent traversal, ACL overrides, or anonymous users
vsftpd local_umask Bits removed for local-user creation Limit group and other access Anonymous uploads or inherited group membership
vsftpd anon_umask Bits removed for anonymous creation Isolate anonymous intake Local-user uploads and directory ownership
ProFTPD Umask Separate masks for files and directories Use one policy in the applicable server context Adding execute bits, ownership, or path traversal
Owner and group Who the kernel identifies as owner and group Define the principals that can access objects Changing mode bits at creation
Setgid directory Inherited group on new children Keep shared uploads in one collaboration group Granting write access by itself
Default ACL Inherited per-user and per-group permissions Policies more precise than one Unix group Correcting an inaccessible parent or unsafe daemon context
Post-upload chmod/chown Changes an object after creation Exceptional, controlled workflows Preventing a risky initial state or replacing a coherent directory design

Security rules that prevent common permission mistakes

  • Use the narrowest umask that supports the stated workflow.
  • Keep anonymous uploads in a separate directory and account, and do not expose them for download unless required.
  • Leave regular uploaded files non-executable by default.
  • Use group ownership, setgid, and ACLs for collaboration; do not use chmod 777 as a shortcut.
  • Disable or tightly restrict SITE CHMOD unless there is a documented administrative need.
  • Treat FTP chroot, upload, and anonymous settings as security-sensitive and review the daemon’s filesystem permissions alongside its configuration.
  • After every policy change, test local and anonymous branches separately and inspect the actual owner, group, mode, ACL, and full path.

What chmod and chown can—and cannot—do

chmod changes permission bits after an object exists. chown changes its user and group ownership. They are useful for repairing an individual object or implementing a deliberately controlled post-upload workflow, but neither replaces the daemon’s creation policy. Correct automatic behavior comes from combining the daemon’s requested mode and umask with a directory whose ownership, setgid state, ACL, and parent traversal permissions support the intended users.
