To have Word save changes to OneDrive automatically, save the document in OneDrive first, then turn on AutoSave in desktop Word. In Word for the web, documents save to OneDrive automatically as you work. AutoSave keeps current changes in the cloud; it is not the same as an offline backup, so use Version History if you need to recover an earlier version.
Set up automatic saving in desktop Word
- Save the document to OneDrive. Open it in Word and choose File > Save As or File > Save a Copy, depending on your Word version and context. Choose OneDrive, select a folder, enter a file name, and save. If the document is already stored in OneDrive or SharePoint, continue to the next step. Microsoft says that storing the document in OneDrive lets Word save changes automatically: Save a document.
- Turn on AutoSave. Find the AutoSave switch in Word’s title bar or Quick Access Toolbar and switch it on. If Word asks where to save the file, choose OneDrive or SharePoint.
- Confirm it is on. Make a small change and check that AutoSave remains enabled. For a cloud document, you can open it through Word’s File > Open cloud location to work with the online copy and its AutoSave behavior.
Make AutoSave the default for online files in Windows
In Word for Windows, go to File > Options > Save and select AutoSave OneDrive and SharePoint Online files by default. This changes the default for eligible online files; it does not move a document stored only on your computer into OneDrive. The setting is documented by Microsoft Support’s AutoSave help.

Save automatically in Word for the web
Open the document in Word for the web and work on it there. Microsoft says documents save automatically to OneDrive while you work: Save a copy of a Word for the web doc in the cloud. This is a browser-based option; desktop Word is the installed-app option. Which is suitable depends on how you prefer to edit, whether the file is in OneDrive or SharePoint, and your account, subscription, and file-format eligibility.

AutoSave writes current changes to the cloud. If you need an earlier state of the document, use Version History. In Word for the web, open File > Version history; you can also use the file’s Version history menu in OneDrive. Microsoft’s instructions are in Restore a previous version of a file in OneDrive.

Version availability is not a universal retention promise. Microsoft’s Word for the web help says a personal Microsoft account can retrieve the last 25 versions; for work or school accounts, the number depends on the library configuration. See Microsoft’s version-history instructions.
- AutoRecover is a separate Word feature with its own save interval and file location; it is not the same as cloud AutoSave. See Recover your Word files and documents.
- Deleted-file recovery and whole-OneDrive restoration are separate OneDrive recovery options. Microsoft describes restoration availability for subscribers in Restore your OneDrive.
If the goal is simply to keep edits to a cloud document current, AutoSave is the relevant feature. If the goal is to undo an unwanted edit, check Version History; if the file was deleted or many files were affected, use the relevant OneDrive recovery option.
