Set canonical_url to the public URL of the original Astro post. Start by creating DEV drafts, verify the rendered copy, and only then choose whether to publish automatically.
How the cross-posting workflow fits together
Astro organizes and builds your site; it does not, by itself, publish a copy of a post to DEV.to. Astro content collections can define and validate your post metadata and help you query entries. A separate automation step—such as a CI job—must call DEV’s API. Collection membership alone does not create a route, so derive the source URL from your site’s configured origin and the post’s actual route or slug, not simply from its Markdown file path. DEV’s documented article endpoint is POST https://dev.to/api/articles. Its request includes an article object with fields such as title and body_markdown, and can include metadata such as tags, description, main image, and canonical_url. Consult the DEV API v0 reference for creation details and the Forem API v1 reference for canonical URLs and article updates.

Run cross-posting only after a post is ready, and choose a trigger that fits your publishing process. The official references do not prescribe a particular CI host or trigger.

- Explicit dispatch: Run the job manually when you decide a post is ready for DEV. This gives you direct control, but requires a separate action for each post.
- Publish label or commit: Trigger when a post is explicitly marked for cross-posting. Make the condition specific enough that later edits do not unintentionally create another DEV article.
- Post-deploy job: Run after the Astro site is deployed, so the original URL is live when DEV receives it. Confirm that the job runs only for intended posts.
Whichever trigger you choose, exclude drafts and consider requiring an explicit front-matter flag such as crosspost: true. A trigger can run more than once, so the job should track which source posts already have DEV article IDs.
Map Astro content to DEV fields
Read the selected post’s front matter and Markdown, then map only the fields DEV should receive. A project-specific Astro schema might include a title, publication date, description, tags, image metadata, and slug. Convert those deliberately instead of forwarding Astro-specific fields that DEV does not recognize.

Forem’s v1 reference defines canonical_url for a post originally published elsewhere “to maintain SEO integrity.” Use the original Astro article URL, not the DEV copy’s URL. The v0 reference also notes that Markdown front matter takes precedence over equivalent payload parameters, so remove or reconcile conflicting front matter before submitting the body.
Create a DEV draft with the API
Store the DEV API key in your automation platform’s secret store and expose it to the job as an environment variable. Do not commit it to the repository or print it in logs. Include the required User-Agent header. The following request shape uses placeholders; replace them with values generated from your selected Astro post.

}'Send valid JSON: a production job should serialize the Markdown and metadata rather than interpolate arbitrary post content into a hand-built JSON string. DEV’s v0 documentation says published defaults to false, but setting it explicitly makes the workflow’s intent clear. Review the created draft on DEV before changing the job to publish immediately.
Prevent duplicate articles and handle API failures
Article creation is not documented as idempotent. A retry after an uncertain timeout could create a second copy if the first request succeeded but its response did not reach your job. Keep a stable source-post identifier—such as the Astro slug plus site origin—mapped to the DEV article ID returned by creation. On later runs, update the known article rather than creating another one; the v1 API documents PUT /api/articles/{id} for updates.

- 201: creation succeeded; save the returned DEV article ID alongside the source identifier.
- 400, 401, 403, or 422: treat as a request, authentication, authorization, or validation failure. Inspect the response and correct the underlying issue before retrying.
- 429: DEV’s v0 documentation specifies a limit of 10 article-creation requests per 30 seconds. Back off before retrying a rate-limited request.
- Network timeout: do not blindly repeat creation. First determine whether the article was created, then record its ID or retry only when you can establish that no article exists.
Log useful operational details such as status codes and source identifiers, but avoid logging the API key or full private content. Check the current API documentation when implementing because endpoint behavior and limits may change.
Choose draft-first or immediate publishing

Both modes use the documented published field. Draft-first is the safer starting point while you validate formatting and duplicate handling; switch to immediate publishing only if that is the intended behavior for your workflow.
