Use YouTube Data API v3’s playlistItems.update method to move a video within a playlist from Bash. First find that video’s playlist-item ID—not just its video ID—then send an authorized PUT request with the playlist ID, video resource ID and a zero-based position. The playlist must use Manual ordering for an explicit position to take effect.
What the script changes—and what it does not
YouTube stores playlist membership and order as playlist-item resources. To move an existing video, update its playlist item through the YouTube Data API v3. This is separate from the YouTube Live Streaming API, whose broadcast and stream operations include creating, updating, binding and transitioning live broadcasts. Changing a live broadcast is not the endpoint for reordering playlist contents.

The steps below adapt Google’s documented HTTP API contract into Bash commands; they are not a claim of tested code. You need a Google Cloud project with the YouTube Data API v3 enabled, an OAuth access token authorized to manage the playlist, and curl plus jq on your machine.

Before you automate changes
Choose an OAuth scope
Playlist mutations require OAuth authorization. The update method documents these accepted scopes: https://www.googleapis.com/auth/youtube and https://www.googleapis.com/auth/youtube.force-ssl. Use an authorization flow for your application that requests an appropriate scope and gives the authenticated account permission to manage the playlist. Do not put a long-lived credential directly in a script or commit it to a repository.

Use the right identifiers
- Playlist ID: identifies the playlist you want to change.
- Video ID: identifies the video included in the playlist.
- Playlist-item ID: identifies that video’s particular occurrence in that playlist. The update request needs this ID as its top-level
id; a video ID is not a substitute.
If the same video appears more than once in one playlist, select the playlist-item ID for the occurrence you intend to move.
Find the target playlist item
Google’s playlist implementation guide describes retrieving playlist information before updating an item. You can list the items in a known playlist and use snippet.resourceId.videoId to find the occurrence you want. This example expects ACCESS_TOKEN, PLAYLIST_ID and VIDEO_ID to be set in your shell:

If the response has a nextPageToken, request subsequent pages using that token before concluding the item is absent; maxResults=50 does not necessarily return every item in a longer playlist. For example, add --data-urlencode "pageToken=$NEXT_PAGE_TOKEN" to the request for each next page.

Set a manual position with Bash
Check the playlist’s ordering
In YouTube Studio or the playlist’s available controls, set Ordering to Manual before requesting a specific position. If the playlist is automatically sorted, YouTube may reject an explicit position with a manual-sort error. The position index is zero-based: 0 is the first item, 1 the second, and so on.
Send the update request
Set POSITION to the desired zero-based index, then submit a PUT request. The body follows the documented structure and includes the playlist-item ID, playlist ID and video resource ID:

The example sends part=snippet, which makes the snippet fields in the request important: update requests can reset or remove mutable properties omitted from a selected part. Preserve the values the item needs to retain rather than treating a partial body as a harmless patch.

Quota and operational safeguards
Google’s current API method references document these quota costs; they can change, so recheck the official references before deployment:

Repeatedly listing and updating items can use quota quickly. If a script performs multiple moves, avoid unnecessary calls, handle HTTP errors, and do not blindly retry a failed mutation without checking the playlist’s current state.
Troubleshoot common failures
- Manual-sort error: change the playlist’s Ordering setting to Manual, then retry the position update.
- Item not found in your script: paginate through all list results, confirm the playlist ID and video ID, and check whether the video appears more than once.
- Update reports an inaccessible or invalid item: confirm that the playlist-item ID belongs to the specified playlist and video, and that the OAuth account has permission to manage that playlist.
- Authorization error: obtain a valid OAuth access token for the account and ensure the authorization includes a scope accepted by the update method.
- Unexpected fields change: review the selected
partand include the mutable values that need to remain; omitted properties in an updated part may be reset or removed. - Quota error: reduce unnecessary list and update calls, review the project’s quota status, and check Google’s current quota documentation before scheduling repeated changes.
