An Automation stores a one-shot or recurring schedule, wakes the agent in a selected session, and can send the result to a chat channel, webhook, or nowhere. To read or change a personal calendar, you also need a suitable calendar skill or integration and the required account permissions. The scheduler alone does not provide calendar access.

What OpenClaw calendar automation actually does
OpenClaw describes Automations as its built-in scheduler for recurring and one-shot work, including heartbeat monitors. The schedule determines when OpenClaw wakes up; your instruction determines what it should do. A calendar skill or connected integration supplies the calendar data and, when authorized, the ability to create or update events.

This separation is important. You can create a perfectly valid schedule that wakes the agent but cannot inspect your calendar because no calendar integration is installed. Conversely, a connected calendar does nothing on its own unless an Automation, a manual prompt, or another trigger invokes it.
| Decision | Options | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Timing | One-shot, interval, recurring schedule, or Heartbeat | When OpenClaw runs and whether the job repeats |
| Execution context | Main, current, named, or isolated session | Which conversation context and run history the task uses |
| Calendar data | Instruction only, installed skill, or OAuth integration | Whether the agent can read calendars or perform event actions |
| Action scope | Read-only summary, reminder, create, or update | The permissions and safeguards the task requires |
| Delivery | Chat channel, webhook, or nowhere | Where the result appears, if anywhere |
| Reliability | Gateway uptime, timezone, destination, and run history | Whether a scheduled result runs and reaches you |
How do I automate my calendar with OpenClaw?
Start with one concrete outcome rather than a vague request to “manage my calendar.” State the calendar to inspect, the time zone, the time or recurrence, the date range, the action to take, and the destination for the result. For example: “At 7:30 every weekday in Europe/London, read my work calendar for today, list meetings with their start times and locations, flag overlaps, and send the summary to my private chat.”

- Connect calendar data. Install an eligible calendar skill or integration if the task needs to read, create, or update events.
- Set delivery deliberately. Choose a chat channel, webhook, or an intentionally silent run.
- Verify operations. Keep the Gateway running, confirm the job time zone, check the destination and channel authentication, and inspect run history after the first execution.
Can OpenClaw check my calendar every morning?
Yes. The official decision guidance identifies calendar monitoring as an Automation use case because it has a defined schedule and a delivery policy. A morning check should specify the time zone and exactly what “check” means: today’s events, the next 24 hours, conflicts, unanswered invitations, travel time, or a concise agenda.
A dependable morning-agenda instruction
Tell the agent which calendar or account to inspect, the local time zone, the look-ahead window, and the format you want. Ask it to distinguish all-day events from timed meetings and to report an empty calendar explicitly. If you want only a warning when something needs attention, say so; otherwise the agent may deliver a routine report every day.
Choose a useful delivery policy
Send the agenda to a chat channel when you need a visible notification, or to a webhook when another system will process it. Select nowhere only when the run itself is the desired outcome, such as writing a record for later inspection. A run that returns NO_REPLY is intentionally non-deliverable; it is not evidence that the schedule failed.
How to create a one-time calendar reminder
The documented one-shot pattern creates an Automation at an absolute timestamp, wakes the selected session, supplies a system event, and deletes the job after it runs:
openclaw automations create "2027-02-01T16:00:00Z"
--name "Reminder"
--session main
--system-event "Reminder: check the automations docs draft"
--wake now
--delete-after-run
Replace the timestamp, name, session, and event text with your calendar task. The example uses UTC because the timestamp ends in Z. For a local-time reminder, make the time-zone treatment explicit in the schedule and verify the effective zone rather than assuming that the host machine’s zone is correct.
Use an event instruction that cannot be misunderstood
Include the event name, the calendar account, and the intended lead time. “Remind me about the product review” is weaker than “At 14:00 America/New_York on 1 February, inspect my work calendar and send a chat reminder for the product review beginning at 14:30.” If the event might be missing or renamed, tell OpenClaw what to do when no matching event is found.

When to keep the job
--delete-after-run is appropriate for a single reminder. Omit one-shot deletion for a recurring job, and use the documented recurring schedule options instead. Do not turn a recurring requirement into a series of manually created one-shot jobs unless you have a specific operational reason to manage each occurrence separately.
How to create recurring calendar checks
For a daily agenda, weekly planning prompt, or repeated conflict scan, create a recurring Automation and name the time zone explicitly. OpenClaw’s documentation supports recurring schedule options, but the exact flags depend on the command version and schedule type. Use the installed command’s help output to confirm the syntax rather than copying an option from an unrelated release:
openclaw automations --help
Then choose the documented recurring form that matches your requirement—an interval, a calendar-style recurrence, or another supported schedule—and specify the intended zone. A schedule of “08:00” without a zone is operationally ambiguous when the host, account, and reader are in different regions or when daylight-saving changes occur.
Write recurrence requirements as a testable rule
- Frequency: every weekday, every Monday, or another exact pattern.
- Time and zone: for example, 07:30 Europe/London.
- Inspection window: today, the next 24 hours, or the following seven days.
- Filtering: a particular calendar, event category, attendee, or location.
- Output: full agenda, conflicts only, or a reminder only when a condition is met.
- Destination: a named chat channel, webhook, or nowhere.
After creation, allow at least one scheduled run to complete and inspect its history. A successful schedule with an unsuitable instruction can look like a timing problem, so check the generated result as well as the run status.

OpenClaw separates main, current, named, and isolated sessions. They do not provide identical context or delivery behavior, so session choice is part of the calendar design rather than a cosmetic setting.
| Session choice | Use it when | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Main | The task should use the primary conversation context | Existing context can be useful, but the run is coupled to that context and its delivery behavior |
| Current | You want the Automation associated with the currently selected conversation | Confirm that the selected conversation is the one intended to receive or supply context |
| Named | You maintain a specific conversation or workflow for calendar work | Use a stable name and document the expected destination |
| Isolated | The recurring check should be self-contained with its own run history and delivery behavior | Include all calendar instructions in the Automation; do not assume unrelated conversation context is available |
For a simple recurring agenda, an isolated session is often easier to reason about because the task has a separate history. Use a main or named session when the Automation must continue an established conversation. Whichever you choose, state the intended session and output route when you create the job and test the first run.

How do I connect Google Calendar or another calendar?
An Automation can wake OpenClaw and issue instructions, but it does not automatically grant access to a personal calendar. OpenClaw’s FAQ documents native skill search and installation commands. Use those commands to find an eligible calendar skill, review its permissions, and install it in the environment where the Gateway runs.
The ClawHub integrations catalog lists Google Workspace tools, including Calendar, through direct OAuth. That listing indicates an available integration path, not universal availability for every account, region, policy, or OpenClaw deployment. Confirm that the integration is present in your catalog, complete OAuth for the intended account, and test access with a read-only request before enabling event changes.
Read-only access first
Begin with a request that lists upcoming events without modifying anything. Check that the returned calendar, time zone, titles, start times, and all-day events match what you see in the calendar’s own interface. This catches wrong-account and wrong-calendar errors before they affect reminders or event updates.
Creating and updating events
Adding or changing events requires an integration that supports those actions and account permissions that allow them. Make the desired behavior explicit: which calendar to use, whether an existing event must be matched, what fields may change, and what to do if multiple events match. Require confirmation for high-impact changes if your workflow or integration supports it. Do not assume that a calendar listing proves that event creation or modification is enabled in your deployment.
Protect credentials and scope
Authorize only the calendar account and permissions needed for the job. Keep the OAuth account consistent with the calendar named in the instruction, and remove or replace access when the account or team changes. Treat the integration’s permission screen and your organization’s account policy as authoritative for what the Automation may do.
How should calendar results be delivered?
OpenClaw Automations can deliver output to a chat channel, a webhook, or nowhere. Delivery is separate from execution: an agent may complete the calendar check successfully while the message fails to reach its destination.

Chat channel
Use a chat destination for a human-readable agenda or reminder. Confirm the channel, recipient, and authentication before relying on it for time-sensitive notifications. A private destination is appropriate for personal calendar details; avoid broadcasting sensitive event names or attendee information to a broad channel.
Webhook
Use a webhook when another service will consume structured output. Define the expected fields in the instruction and verify that the receiving endpoint accepts the request from the Gateway environment. Keep a fallback run history so a downstream outage does not erase evidence that the calendar check occurred.
Nowhere
A silent Automation can still be useful for an internal check or a workflow that writes its result elsewhere. Set this deliberately. If you expected a visible reminder and selected nowhere—or the instruction produced NO_REPLY—the absence of a message is expected behavior.
Why a calendar Automation may appear broken
Scheduled jobs execute inside the Gateway process. The Gateway must remain running for the job to fire, so a stopped process is the first infrastructure check.
The job did not run
- Confirm that the Gateway process is running continuously.
- Check the Automation’s configured time zone and compare it with the expected local time.
- Verify that the recurrence was created as recurring rather than as a one-shot job that was deleted after execution.
- Inspect the run history to determine whether the job is pending, failed, or completed.
The job ran but no message arrived
- Check whether delivery is set to a chat channel, webhook, or nowhere.
- Verify the destination identifier and channel authentication.
- Look for an intentional
NO_REPLYresult. - Review whether a webhook endpoint accepted the request.
The job ran but showed no calendar events
- Confirm that the calendar skill or OAuth integration is installed where the Gateway runs.
- Check that OAuth was completed for the intended account.
- Verify the calendar name, date range, and time zone in the instruction.
- Run a read-only calendar query manually to separate an access problem from a scheduling problem.
Use run history for evidence
The documented troubleshooting command is:
openclaw automations runs <jobId> --limit 50
Replace <jobId> with the actual job identifier. Review recent executions for timestamps, session choice, delivery results, and error messages. Run history is more useful than repeatedly changing the schedule because it shows which stage—wake-up, calendar access, agent response, or delivery—failed.
Automation versus Heartbeat for calendar monitoring
Use an explicit Automation when you authored a defined calendar schedule and want predictable timing and delivery. Heartbeat is system-owned ambient monitoring. The Automation guide distinguishes these concepts: Automations are for explicit user-authored schedules, while Heartbeat is for background monitoring controlled by the system.
Best Value
A morning agenda at a fixed local time belongs in an Automation. An ambient check that is allowed to run as part of broader system monitoring belongs to Heartbeat only when your deployment’s system policy provides that behavior. Do not rely on Heartbeat to replace a calendar schedule that must run at an exact time or deliver to a specific destination.
Useful OpenClaw calendar patterns
Morning agenda
Schedule a weekday run, specify the local time zone, read today’s calendar, separate all-day and timed events, identify overlaps, and deliver a concise chat message. Include a rule for an empty calendar so the run produces a clear result.
Pre-meeting reminder
Create a one-shot Automation for the desired lead time. Instruct it to find the matching event, include the start time and location or meeting link when available, and report that no match was found instead of silently guessing.
Recurring conflict check
Run at a fixed interval or recurring time, inspect the next defined window, and report only overlapping events or insufficient travel gaps. A narrow output keeps routine checks useful and reduces unnecessary notifications.
Post-event follow-up
Schedule a one-shot prompt after an event and direct it to the appropriate session. If the follow-up must read notes or update an event, specify the source and permitted action; the scheduler does not supply those permissions by itself.
Calendar automation checklist
- The outcome is a specific calendar task, not a vague request.
- The Automation type matches the timing: one-shot or recurring.
- The schedule includes an explicit time zone.
- The selected session is appropriate for the required context and delivery behavior.
- A calendar skill or OAuth integration is installed when data access is required.
- The account, calendar, and permissions have been verified with a read-only test.
- Event creation or updates are limited to the intended calendar and fields.
- The delivery destination and channel authentication have been tested.
- The Gateway remains running continuously.
- The first execution and subsequent failures can be inspected with run history.
Bottom line: the reliable way to automate a calendar with OpenClaw
Build the workflow in layers: define the calendar outcome, create an explicit Automation with a verified time zone, choose the session deliberately, connect a calendar skill or OAuth integration only when needed, and configure delivery separately from execution. Keep the Gateway running and use run history to diagnose timing, access, and notification failures. This approach supports morning checks, recurring reminders, conflict detection, and—where the integration and permissions allow it—calendar event creation or updates without confusing scheduling with calendar access.
