How to Automate Website Screenshots from WordPress Posts with Zapier

Use a WordPress New Post trigger, map its public permalink to a screenshot action, and route the resulting image to a destination. Here’s how to configure and test the workflow.

To capture a screenshot whenever a WordPress post is published, create a Zap with WordPress as the trigger and a website-screenshot action next. Map the post’s public URL to the screenshot action’s required Website URL field, then send the resulting image to a destination that accepts it. Zapier documents the pieces of this workflow; you’ll need to test the URL mapping, capture timing, and destination in your own account before relying on it.

Build the WordPress-to-screenshot Zap

  1. Choose the WordPress trigger

In Zapier, create a Zap and select WordPress as the trigger app. Choose New Post if you want a capture when a post is created. Zapier also lists Updated Post; use it only when edits should trigger another capture, since repeated updates may create multiple images. See Zapier’s WordPress integrations for the current trigger listing.

  2. Connect WordPress and test the trigger

Connect your WordPress account using Zapier’s current setup instructions, then test the trigger with a representative post. Zapier’s connection guide includes prerequisites and connection steps; check it directly for the requirements that apply to your site: How to get started with WordPress on Zapier.

  3. Add the screenshot action and map the URL

Add GetScreenshot and select Take Website Screenshot. Its required inputs include Website URL and Full Page Capture. Map the post’s public permalink into Website URL. This mapping follows from the documented trigger and screenshot input; verify that the value is the published page URL rather than an editor or preview link, and that the page is publicly accessible to the capture service. Zapier describes the action as taking a custom screenshot of a live website and making it available to a following action. See the WordPress–GetScreenshot integration listing.

  4. Choose capture settings

Enable full-page capture for a complete post, or use an element-capture option when you need a specific page element and know its CSS selector. The listing also exposes options such as width, PDF output, extra wait time, advanced strategy, custom CSS, and an experimental login bypass. Treat login bypass as experimental rather than a default way to capture private content.

  5. Send or store the result

Add a destination action suited to your workflow—for example, cloud storage, a review process, or social publishing. Check that the destination accepts the screenshot output supplied by the preceding action and configure its file or image fields accordingly. Connector availability and field names vary; verify them in your live Zap editor.

  6. Test the complete workflow

Run the Zap on a public post that represents your actual site, including its theme, images, consent banner, and dynamic content. Confirm that the screenshot shows the intended page and that the destination receives a usable image or file. These are validation steps to perform on your setup, not guaranteed results for every WordPress host or page.

Plan for trigger timing and Zap steps

Zapier’s WordPress integration page describes Free-plan polling as checking every 15 minutes. That timing is plan-sensitive; confirm the trigger behavior and plan details shown in your account if capture timing matters. A screenshot followed by a separate storage or publishing action may require three or more Zap steps. The GetScreenshot listing says a Starter plan is needed to create Zaps with three or more steps; verify current plan rules before building around that limit.

Troubleshoot common capture problems

  • The screenshot opens the wrong page or fails to load: inspect the mapped Website URL in the Zap test data. Use the published permalink, not an editor or preview URL, unless the screenshot service is deliberately configured for authenticated content.
  • The page is incomplete: the capture may start before final assets or scripts have loaded. Try the action’s extra wait setting and test again; additional waiting may help with slow pages but does not guarantee every dynamic element will render.
  • You only need part of the page: use element capture only when you have the correct CSS selector. If you do not know it, capture the whole page or inspect the site’s markup to identify a suitable selector.
  • The destination gets no usable image: inspect the screenshot action’s test output, then check whether the next action accepts that output and whether its file or image field is mapped correctly.
  • Edits create more captures than expected: use New Post rather than Updated Post if only new posts should trigger screenshots. If updates are intentional, decide how your destination should handle repeat images.
  • The Zap cannot be saved with all steps: check the current plan’s step limits. The GetScreenshot listing notes the Starter plan for Zaps with three or more steps, but account rules can change.

For a direct API workflow, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns a screenshot. A Zapier trigger can provide the public post URL to an HTTP/API step or another integration path in your workflow; configure that handoff and test it in your account. ScreenshotNeo’s options include PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output, and its documentation covers the API parameters at ScreenshotNeo’s API docs.
