Percy builds visual comparisons from those snapshots; review each change and approve the baseline only when the new appearance is intentional.
How Percy visual testing fits into an existing test suite
Percy adds visual snapshots to functional tests rather than replacing those tests. The integration has two parts: framework-specific SDK calls at the states you want to inspect, and the Percy CLI process around the test command. The token lets that process associate submitted snapshots with your Percy project. See Percy’s integrations page to check current support for your framework, application type, CI/CD provider, and review workflow.
A useful snapshot captures a meaningful user-facing state—for example, a page after navigation or a form after a successful submission—not an arbitrary moment while the interface is still changing. Give snapshots stable, descriptive names so reviewers can recognize corresponding states across builds.
Add Percy to Playwright
Install the CLI and SDK
npm install --save-dev @percy/cli @percy/playwright
Percy’s Playwright SDK repository documents the package and snapshot workflow: percy-playwright.

Capture a stable state
Import the snapshot function and call it after the test has reached the intended state. For example:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
import { percySnapshot } from '@percy/playwright';
test('home page renders', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Example Domain' })).toBeVisible();
await percySnapshot(page, 'Home page');
});
Replace the example URL and assertion with the route and functional checks for your application. The assertion makes the capture point explicit: Percy should receive the state your test intends to validate.
Set the token and run the suite
Create or select the Percy project for the application, then provide its token through the environment. For a local shell, set PERCY_TOKEN without committing the value to source control. In CI, store it as a secret/environment variable and expose it to the step that runs Percy.

export PERCY_TOKEN=your_project_token
npx percy exec -- npx playwright test
The command wraps the normal Playwright run so Percy can receive the SDK snapshots and finalize a build. Without the Percy process and a valid token available to the run, the SDK examples do not upload snapshots as a Percy build.

Install and import the integration
npm install --save-dev @percy/cli @percy/cypress
Import @percy/cypress in the Cypress support file, then add cy.percySnapshot() calls at the points where a visual check belongs. Percy’s Cypress SDK repository and its Cypress visual testing guide document this integration.
Capture and run a visual build
For example, after visiting a page and confirming it has loaded, add a named snapshot:

- Vanishing design: Only people with good color vision can see the sign. If you are colorblind you won’t see anything.
- Transformation design: Color blind people will see a different sign than people with no color vision handicap.
- Hidden digit design: Only colorblind people are able to spot the sign. If you have perfect color vision, you won’t be able to see it.
- Classification design: This is used to differentiate between red- and green-blind persons. The vanishing design is used on either side of the plate, one side for deutan defects an the other for protans.
cy.visit('https://example.com');
cy.get('h1').should('be.visible');
cy.percySnapshot('Home page');
Set PERCY_TOKEN in the local or CI environment, then wrap the Cypress command:
export PERCY_TOKEN=your_project_token
npx percy exec -- cypress run
As with Playwright, adapt the example route and readiness check to your application and keep the token out of the repository.
Review diffs and maintain the baseline
The first run needs an approved reference baseline. Later builds compare their snapshots against that reference and surface visual differences for review. A diff is evidence of a change, not automatically a defect: decide whether the new rendering is intended before approving it.

No Percy build or uploaded snapshots
Check that the test command is wrapped in percy exec, that the SDK snapshot call runs, and that PERCY_TOKEN is available to the same process. Confirm the token belongs to the intended Percy project.
Snapshots show an incomplete or transient page
Move the snapshot call until after navigation, interaction, and relevant asynchronous rendering have finished. Add a functional readiness check before capturing instead of relying on a call placed immediately after a page visit.

Reviewers cannot tell snapshots apart
Replace generic or changing names with stable labels that describe the route and state, such as Checkout — payment form. Use the same name for the corresponding state on later runs.
Package or framework instructions do not match your project
Percy’s SDK and integration details can change. Check the current package and framework support on the integrations page and the relevant Playwright or Cypress repository before changing a working test setup.

If your need is to request screenshots through an API rather than add visual diffs to an automated test suite, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request capture. For example, this cURL call saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
Quick Recap
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and setup. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free.
