To automate PDF generation in Make, build a scenario that starts with an event or data source, generates a document through a connected app such as Plumsail Documents, retrieves the resulting file, and sends it to storage or email. For the documented Plumsail workflow, that means preparing a process and template, connecting with an active Plumsail account and API key, mapping Make fields to template tokens, then adding a delivery step.
How the Make scenario fits together
A Make scenario begins with a trigger and passes its data through actions, which may transform or route that data between services. Make describes scenarios as workflows built from modules. For PDF creation, the core sequence is:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Trigger: detect the event that should produce a document, such as a new spreadsheet row or form submission.
- Generate: pass the trigger’s values to a document-generation action.
- Retrieve: if the action returns a file URL rather than file content, fetch the file before sending it to a module that requires a binary file.
- Deliver: upload the PDF to storage, email it, or route it to another connected app.
The trigger and destination depend on your own workflow. The documented Plumsail example uses Google Sheets as a source and Google Drive and Gmail for delivery; other structured-data apps connected to Make can follow the same general pattern.

1. Prepare the process and template
In Plumsail Documents, create a process, select its template, set the output options, and choose PDF as the output format. Put named tokens in the template wherever values from Make should appear. Use clear, distinct token names so you can match each one to its source field.

2. Connect Plumsail to Make
Add the Plumsail Documents app to your Make scenario and create a connection. The Plumsail Documents integration instructions require an active Plumsail account and an API key. Make connections and credentials vary by service, so follow the relevant app’s connection instructions and grant only the access the workflow needs.
3. Map trigger fields to template tokens
Add the Plumsail action named Start Document Generation Process, select the process you prepared, and map each token to its corresponding value from the trigger. Check that values come from the intended fields—for example, a customer name token should map to the customer name field, not a company or contact field. Plumsail notes that deeply nested tokens may not be supported in the Make action interface; if a token does not appear or cannot be mapped, simplify the token structure or check the integration’s current documentation.

- READY WHENEVER YOU ARE – The DS-640 mobile scanner is powered via an included micro USB 3. 0 cable allowing you to use it even where there is no outlet available. Plug it into you PC or laptop and you are ready to scan.
- WORKS YOUR WAY – Use the Brother free iPrint&Scan desktop app for scanning to multiple “Scan-to” destinations like PC, Network, cloud services, Email and OCR. (2) Supports Windows, Mac and Linux and TWAIN/WIA for PC/ICA for Mac/SANE drivers. (3)
- OPTIMIZE IMAGES AND TEXT – Automatic color detection/adjustment, image rotation (PC only), bleed through prevention/background removal, text enhancement, color drop to enhance scans. Software suite includes document management and OCR software. (4)
4. Retrieve the generated PDF
The generation action returns a result file reference. In Plumsail’s walkthrough, an HTTP Get a file module retrieves the generated PDF from its URL. Treat a URL and file content as different stages: a downstream email or storage action may require the actual file, so configure a retrieval step when the receiving module cannot accept a URL directly.

5. Deliver or store the result
Add the destination action after retrieval. For example, upload the file to Google Drive or attach it to a Gmail message. Choose a destination folder, filename, recipient, and any other required fields explicitly so each run places the PDF where you expect.

Choose the generation route that matches the source material
| What you need to make | Documented Make route | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Business PDFs populated from structured data | Plumsail Documents process and template generation | Template tokens, field mappings, output settings, and the retrieval step. |
| A PDF rendered from supplied HTML | Plumsail Documents HTML-to-PDF action | Whether your HTML and any referenced assets render as intended. |
| A PDF converted from an existing office file | Plumsail Documents conversion actions for DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX to PDF | That the source file is available to the action and the converted file is routed onward. |
| Document content assembled in Google Docs | Make lists Google Docs actions to create a document from HTML or copy a template and replace tags | The cited actions alone do not establish a universal Docs-to-PDF sequence. Confirm the export or conversion step for your specific scenario. |
| A service without a direct Make integration | Make’s HTTP app can connect to a service with a suitable API | API authentication, request format, response handling, and any file conversion required. HTTP is a fallback, not a guarantee that every service can be connected without extra setup. |
The choice depends on where the input data lives, whether you need a reusable template or HTML rendering, whether office-file conversion is involved, how many files you handle, how the destination accepts files, and what authentication and retention the workflow requires. The cited documentation does not establish a neutral price or performance comparison among these routes.
Test the scenario before scheduling it
- Run the scenario using representative input, including values that may be empty or unusually long.
- Open the generated PDF and inspect page breaks, formatting, token substitutions, and the output filename.
- Confirm that the retrieval step produces file content when the destination needs an attachment or upload.
- Check the destination itself: verify the file appears in the expected folder or arrives at the expected address.
- Only after those checks, configure the scenario’s schedule or activation state for routine runs.
These checks follow from the documented token-mapping, file-retrieval, and delivery steps; they are setup guidance, not a claim of a tested scenario.

Retention and reliability considerations
Generated files remain available in Plumsail process run history for 24 hours, according to its documentation. That history is not long-term storage. Add an explicit upload, email, or other persistence action if the document must remain available beyond that window.
For an event-driven workflow, also consider what should happen if generation, retrieval, or delivery fails. Review the scenario run details, identify the failing module, and decide whether the input should be corrected and rerun or handled through a separate error path. The documentation cited here does not specify a universal retry policy or guarantee delivery, so validate the behavior and recovery process in your own scenario.

Troubleshoot common PDF workflow problems
- Make cannot connect to Plumsail: confirm you have an active Plumsail account and that the connection uses a valid API key; then recreate or update the connection using the integration instructions.
- A field is missing or a token cannot be mapped: check the process selection and token names. Deeply nested tokens may not be supported by the Make action interface, so simplify the token structure if needed.
- The next module receives a link instead of an attachment: add a file-retrieval step such as HTTP Get a file, then map the retrieved content to the destination’s file input.
- The PDF has blank or incorrect fields: compare each template token with the field mapped from the trigger, and inspect the input record for empty or differently structured values.
- A file is no longer available in run history: the documented retention is 24 hours. Retrieve and store or deliver it during the workflow rather than relying on process history for later access.
- You expect a ready-made scenario template: Make provides a public scenario-template library searchable by app or action, but availability of a template for this exact PDF workflow is not established. Build the module sequence from the steps above if no suitable template appears.

If your goal is to capture a website as a PDF rather than generate a data-filled business document, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-call screenshot API that can return a PDF. This is a different job from filling a Plumsail template from Make data.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. cURL example:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Change the target URL to the page you want to capture. The example saves an image; request PDF output using the API’s documented options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the outcome identified in response headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot, page-info, and PDF-capture tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
