Google says automated Search queries for rank-checking without express permission violate its policies and Terms of Service. Build reports around reproducible search context, preserve unaltered captures, and use Google Search Console separately for the client’s site-performance data—not as a screenshot tool or a complete inventory of results.
What a SERP screenshot can—and cannot—show
A screenshot is a record of what a configured browser displayed for one query at one moment. It can document visible results, result features, and page layout, but it is not proof of a stable national ranking. Location, language, and device can affect Google Search relevance, so an Indian report should specify its observation context rather than imply one screenshot represents all Indian users. Google’s Search Console overview describes a different tool: performance reporting for a verified site property.

Use screenshots for visual observations. Use Search Console to examine the client property’s measured Search performance, such as clicks, impressions, click-through rate, and average position. Those measures answer different questions from a manually observed position in a particular screenshot.
First, choose a permitted automation method
Google’s policy explicitly includes “scraping results for rank-checking purposes or other types of automated access to Google Search conducted without express permission” among machine-generated traffic that violates its spam policies and Terms of Service. See Google’s spam policies. Do not treat unattended direct requests to Google Search as the default automation method.
Before scheduling a third-party provider or API for a commercial client report, confirm its permission basis and contractual terms. Also verify that it supports the Indian locations and device classes you need, renders mobile and desktop as intended, and lets you retain or export captures and method metadata. The fact that a service exists does not establish that its collection is authorized; no specific provider’s permission or coverage is established here.
Define a repeatable India search context
Keep a keyword list with the intended Indian location, language, device class, and reporting frequency. For each capture, record enough context for another person to understand or reproduce the observation:
Rank #2
- Query: the exact search text, including spelling and punctuation.
- Location: the Indian city or area where relevant, and the provider’s location setting or method.
- Language: the language selected or otherwise applied to the search.
- Device: desktop or mobile and, where applicable, the viewport or device preset.
- Time: capture timestamp in UTC.
- Controls: any account, personalization, or localization controls applied, including relevant deviations from the normal setup.
- Collection metadata: provider or method, job identifier if available, and original artifact location.
Keep these settings consistent between reporting periods where possible. If the location, language, viewport, or other capture conditions change, record the change rather than presenting the resulting images as a like-for-like comparison.
Automate capture and preserve the evidence
- Check the collection route. Confirm authorization and commercial-use terms before enabling recurring captures. Confirm India location availability, device rendering, retention, and export.
- Schedule the defined query set. Use the same intended location, language, device class, and frequency for each keyword. Keep a record of exceptions.
- Save the original image and metadata. Store each capture unaltered with its query, location, language, device or viewport, UTC timestamp, and source or collection method.
- Annotate outside the Search interface. Add report labels, notes, or arrows in the report layout around the image; do not edit result text or manufacture a composite Google interface.
- Compare only equivalent observations. Align location, language, device, query set, observation time, and visible result features before describing a change.
- Retain method notes and source artifacts. Keep enough records for the client to audit or reproduce how the report was assembled.
Google’s Search results screenshot guidance calls for preserving the interface: do not alter it or manufacture, remove, or alter suggestions or results. Review third-party content rights before redistributing captured pages, and include Google’s requested trademark attribution where applicable.

ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API with a one-request capture flow. For a SERP report, use it only where the requested collection is authorized; an API does not grant permission to automate Google Search. Its cleanup can accept cookie or consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers identifying the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, and the free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
Example request for an authorized target URL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request parameters, response formats, and options. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo, then sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
Add Search Console as a separate performance layer
For the client’s verified property, use Search Console Search Analytics to assess site performance over a defined date window. Select dimensions such as country, device, page, and query according to the question the report needs to answer. Label these figures as the property’s observed Search performance, not a census of all Google results or a screenshot-based ranking.
Rank #4
Google’s guide recommends daily requests with a one-day date range. Data is typically available after 2–3 days, so the newest screenshot date may not yet have corresponding Search Console data. The Search Analytics API returns up to 25,000 rows per response page; Google’s guide states a maximum of 50,000 rows per day per search type. Detailed page-and-query grouping can also lose data, so state the chosen aggregation and its limits when interpreting totals. See the Search Analytics API guide and its querying guidance; check current documentation when implementing because technical limits can change.
Google’s Search Researcher Result API is not a general-purpose commercial client-report endpoint: Google’s Help page limits access to eligible researchers and non-commercial use under its program terms.

Build comparisons the client can interpret
For each comparison period, keep the observation axes consistent and make the distinctions explicit:
- Screenshot observation: what appeared in the saved image for the stated query and capture context.
- Search Console performance: the client property’s clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position for the stated dimensions and date window.
- Visible layout: notable result features and changes in what is visible within the captured viewport.
- Method changes: changes in location, language, device, personalization controls, provider, or capture timing that could affect comparability.
Do not equate the apparent location of a result in one image with Search Console average position. Report both only with their own definitions and context.

Quick Recap
Troubleshooting an automated reporting workflow
- Captures differ unexpectedly: Check whether location, language, device or viewport, query text, capture time, and personalization controls stayed consistent. Record any changes instead of calling the images directly comparable.
- Google blocks or challenges automated access: Stop unattended direct Search requests. Reassess the collection method and its express permission and contract terms; do not try to evade a challenge.
- The client asks why screenshot positions and Search Console positions disagree: Explain that one is a point-in-time visual observation and the other is a property performance metric over selected dimensions and dates. They are not interchangeable.
- Recent Search Console dates look incomplete: Allow for the typical 2–3 day data delay and state the actual date window used.
- API rows do not match an expected total: Check pagination and row limits, then review whether detailed query/page grouping may have dropped data. Describe the aggregation rather than presenting incomplete detail as exhaustive.
- A capture needs labels or callouts: Put annotations around the original image in the report, preserving the Search interface itself unchanged.
