For a browser-based web app, automate end-to-end tests by defining a few important user journeys, making each test independent, and running those same tests against a deliberate matrix of browser engines, device profiles, and environments. Playwright projects make that matrix configurable; CI runs it repeatedly and traces help explain failures. Browser testing and mobile emulation do not, by themselves, validate native iOS or Android behavior.

What “across platforms” means for end-to-end tests

First decide what the word platforms includes for your product. Playwright’s test projects can run browser tests in Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, use branded browsers, emulate tablet and mobile profiles, and target different environments such as staging and production. That is useful for web applications, including mobile web. It is not evidence that the same browser suite tests native iOS or Android applications, or native desktop software.

What you need to cover What a Playwright project can cover What still needs separate validation
Web app in different browser engines Run the same tests in configured browser projects. Only engines and versions you actually configure and execute are covered.
Responsive or mobile web Emulate a selected device profile and viewport. Emulation is not a substitute for every real-device, OS, or hardware behavior.
Native iOS or Android app The cited Playwright projects documentation does not establish native-app coverage. Select and validate a platform-specific native automation approach; real-device checks may be needed.
Native desktop software The cited Playwright projects documentation does not establish native desktop coverage. Choose a testing approach for the desktop application surface.

Playwright’s Projects documentation describes the browser and emulation configuration options. Choose combinations based on supported users and risk rather than multiplying every browser, device, environment, and journey by default.

Choose user-visible journeys and outcomes

Start from what a user needs to accomplish, such as creating an account, completing checkout, or changing a setting. For each journey, define the observable result that means it worked and the failure signals that matter. The right inventory depends on your application; there is no universal number or list of journeys.

Keep assertions focused on the user experience. Playwright’s Best Practices documentation says: “Automated tests should verify that the application code works for the end users, and avoid relying on implementation details such as things which users will not typically use, see, or even know about such as the name of a function, whether something is an array, or the CSS class of some element.” Prefer accessible roles, labels, and visible outcomes over private function names or brittle styling selectors.

Make each test independent

A test should be able to run alone and in any order. Playwright’s Best Practices documentation says: “Each test should be completely isolated from another test and should run independently with its own local storage, session storage, data, cookies etc.” Give scenarios their own data and browser state; set up and clean up what each test needs rather than relying on a preceding test to create a session or record.

  • Use unique test records or resettable fixtures when scenarios create or modify data.
  • Keep authentication and other setup explicit so the test can be rerun without manual browser preparation.
  • Do not let one failed journey invalidate later journeys by making them depend on its side effects.

Install Playwright and write a representative journey

The following example uses Playwright Test with TypeScript. It assumes your application provides a sign-up page at /signup, fields labeled “Email” and “Password,” and a success message with the role status. Change those app-specific paths and accessible names to match your actual interface.

  1. Install the test runner and browser binaries:
npm init -y
npm install --save-dev @playwright/test
npx playwright install

For Linux CI, install the browser OS dependencies as well with npx playwright install --with-deps.

Create playwright.config.ts to share the suite across selected browsers and a mobile web profile:

import { defineConfig, devices } from '@playwright/test';

export default defineConfig({
  testDir: './tests',
  retries: process.env.CI ? 1 : 0,
  reporter: process.env.CI ? [['html', { open: 'never' }]] : 'list',
  use: {
    baseURL: process.env.BASE_URL ?? 'http://127.0.0.1:3000',
    trace: 'on-first-retry',
  },
  projects: [
    { name: 'chromium', use: { ...devices['Desktop Chrome'] } },
    { name: 'firefox', use: { ...devices['Desktop Firefox'] } },
    { name: 'webkit', use: { ...devices['Desktop Safari'] } },
    { name: 'mobile-web', use: { ...devices['iPhone 13'] } },
  ],
});

This is an example matrix, not a requirement to support every listed configuration. Keep only projects that represent users and risks you intend to cover. Add an environment by setting BASE_URL to the target site; use a separate CI job or configuration when environments need different credentials or settings.

Create tests/signup.spec.ts:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

 test('a visitor can create an account', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('/signup');
  await page.getByLabel('Email').fill(`e2e-${Date.now()}@example.test`);
  await page.getByLabel('Password').fill('Example-password-42');
  await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Create account' }).click();
  await expect(page.getByRole('status')).toContainText('Account created');
});

The address and password are test data for this illustrative flow; align them with the application’s validation rules and use a test environment. The important pattern is that the test drives the interface and checks the visible outcome, not that these labels or messages match every application.

Run the suite locally with npx playwright test. To run one project, use npx playwright test --project=webkit; to run one test file, pass its path, for example npx playwright test tests/signup.spec.ts.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a clean screenshot artifact alongside functional tests, ScreenshotNeo can return a webpage screenshot or PDF from one GET request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for assertions and interactions in a functional test suite. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. For a functional test, keep using a test runner to exercise the journey and verify its outcome.

Run the suite repeatably in CI

Install the project dependencies and browser binaries in the CI job, then run the same test command on commits or pull requests. For example, a GitHub Actions workflow can use:

name: End-to-end tests

on: [push, pull_request]

jobs:
  test:
    runs-on: ubuntu-latest
    steps:
      - uses: actions/checkout@v4
      - uses: actions/setup-node@v4
        with:
          node-version: lts/*
          cache: npm
      - run: npm ci
      - run: npx playwright install --with-deps
      - run: npx playwright test

Configure BASE_URL for the environment under test and provide any test credentials through your CI secret mechanism rather than committing them in the test. Make sure the application is available before the test command starts; whether CI starts the app or targets a deployed environment depends on your pipeline.

Playwright’s Continuous Integration guide recommends one worker in CI “to prioritize stability and reproducibility.” Its guidance allows parallelism on powerful self-hosted systems and describes sharding across CI jobs for wider parallelization. Start with the stability-first setting, then increase concurrency only after checking that test data is isolated and runners have capacity. Containers can help keep browser and OS setup consistent. Microsoft also documents hosted execution through Playwright Workspaces as a scaling option; confirm service setup and availability for your needs.

Debug failures with traces, not arbitrary waits

Enable trace collection on retry or failure and inspect the trace when CI reports a failure. The Playwright trace viewer presents a timeline, DOM snapshots, and network requests, which can help distinguish a real application defect from a timing, setup, or environment problem. If an assertion fails, check the user-visible state and network activity before adding a fixed delay that may only hide the cause.

Playwright’s CI documentation notes that --only-changed is heuristic and can miss affected tests. It can help with preliminary selection, but retain a full-suite run for validation.

Choose coverage, speed, and operating cost deliberately

  • Coverage: Prioritize browser engines, device profiles, environments, and journeys that reflect your supported users and meaningful risks. Each configured project adds work; avoid a matrix made only by taking every possible combination.
  • Feedback time: A single worker favors repeatability, while additional workers or sharded CI jobs can reduce elapsed time if the pipeline has capacity and the tests remain independent. Measure this in your own runner environment; no universal speedup is established.
  • Operational overhead: Self-hosted CI means maintaining browser installation and runner capacity. A hosted browser option can shift some execution infrastructure, but requires service setup and availability checks.
  • Reliability: Keep the application environment and test data controlled, capture traces for diagnosis, and review failures rather than treating retries as proof of correctness.

Common failure causes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Browser executable is missing in CI The job installed the package but not its browser binaries or required OS dependencies. Run npx playwright install --with-deps in the Linux job and confirm the install step completed.
Tests pass locally but fail in CI The CI environment, app readiness, credentials, or data differs from local conditions. Check BASE_URL, test secrets, application startup/availability, and the failed trace before changing timing.
A test fails only when the full suite runs Tests may share browser state or mutable data, or depend on execution order. Run the test alone, then remove shared state and make its setup and data independent.
One browser project fails but others pass The interface or application behavior may differ by engine, or the selected project configuration may not represent the intended target. Inspect the project’s trace and confirm that the browser coverage is intentional; fix user-visible incompatibilities rather than weakening the assertion without cause.
Mobile emulation passes but a native app behavior is untested The suite covers mobile web in an emulated browser profile, not native application interactions. Define a separate native testing and device-validation plan for the platforms in scope.
A selective changed-files run misses a regression Changed-test selection is heuristic and may omit relevant tests. Run the full suite as a validation step.

Keep the platform boundary explicit

Playwright’s documented projects are a strong way to repeat browser-based functional journeys across configured engines, emulated devices, and environments. They do not establish universal native mobile or desktop coverage. If your requirement includes native interactions, treat that as a separate platform decision and validate it with tools and devices appropriate to that application surface. An older image-driven mobile-testing prototype reported different replay accuracy for Android and iOS in its own experiment; those results are not a current production expectation or a general benchmark. See the authors’ 2021 revision of “Layout and Image Recognition Driving Cross-Platform Automated Mobile Testing.”
