The safest way to automate OpenClaw configuration is to treat ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json as a managed JSON5 document and make every change through the OpenClaw CLI. Read the existing value with openclaw config get, validate a proposed value with config set --strict-json --dry-run, apply it only after validation succeeds, and read it again to verify the result. For several changes, use a batch file and its dry-run mode. Always make your own backup first, and never put the configuration path behind a symlink: OpenClaw writes atomically and can replace the symlink itself rather than updating its target.

Where OpenClaw stores configuration
By default, OpenClaw reads its configuration from ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json. The file uses JSON5, so the syntax can include JSON5 features supported by OpenClaw rather than being limited to strict JSON. If the file does not exist, OpenClaw starts with safe defaults; an automation job should therefore distinguish “missing file” from “empty or invalid file” before deciding what to change.

Set OPENCLAW_CONFIG_PATH when the configuration is stored elsewhere. The variable must be present in the environment of every CLI invocation in your script, service unit, container, or scheduled job.
export OPENCLAW_CONFIG_PATH=/srv/openclaw/openclaw.json
openclaw config get gateway.port
Alternatively, scope it to one command:
OPENCLAW_CONFIG_PATH=/srv/openclaw/openclaw.json openclaw config get gateway.port
Use the same setting for backup, validation, writing, and verification. A common automation failure is backing up the default file while the commands are operating on a path supplied through OPENCLAW_CONFIG_PATH.

Inspect a field before changing it
OpenClaw’s configuration is hierarchical. The CLI addresses fields with dot paths, so this command reads the current gateway port:
openclaw config get gateway.port
For nested arrays, bracket notation identifies an element, for example:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchopenclaw config get agents.list[0].id
Before writing an unfamiliar field, consult OpenClaw’s config.schema.lookup documentation for that exact path. It is the field-level reference for accepted types, allowed values, defaults, and related settings. Do not infer a field’s type from its name: a value that looks numeric may be defined as a string, and a setting may be valid only in a particular object or array.
Capture the current value in logs when that is appropriate, but do not publish secrets. Configuration output can contain credentials, tokens, private endpoints, or personal data. Restrict log permissions and redact sensitive paths before sending command output to a central system.
The four configuration commands
| Command | Use | Writes the file? | Automation note |
|---|---|---|---|
config get <path> |
Read one dot-path value | No | Use before and after a change |
config set <path> <value> |
Create or replace a value | Yes, unless dry-run is used | Use --strict-json when validating typed JSON values |
config unset <path> |
Remove a value | Yes, unless dry-run is used | Re-read the path and confirm the expected “missing” result |
config patch |
Apply a patch, including a patch file | Yes, unless dry-run is used | --file <path> --dry-run is useful for schema validation of a prepared patch |
Exact option names can vary with the installed OpenClaw release. Run openclaw config --help and openclaw config set --help on the machine that will execute the automation instead of copying flags from a different version.
A safe one-field automation sequence
The following sequence keeps validation, writing, and verification separate. It also avoids assuming that a successful process exit alone proves the intended value was stored.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Back up the active file. Create a timestamped copy of the path OpenClaw will actually use. Preserve the file mode and ownership where possible.
- Read the current value. Run
openclaw config get <path>and record a redacted before-state. - Validate without writing. Run
config setwith both--strict-jsonand--dry-run. - Apply the identical command without
--dry-run. Keep the path and value byte-for-byte the same as in the validation step. - Read the field again. Compare the returned value with the desired value, using type-aware comparison rather than a text comparison when the output format is not stable.
- Reload the affected service if required. The available documentation does not establish which individual keys take effect immediately and which require a Gateway restart, so follow the operational requirement for the particular subsystem and test it in a non-production instance first.
Example: changing a numeric port
With strict JSON parsing, pass a number as a JSON number, not as a quoted string:

openclaw config get gateway.port
openclaw config set gateway.port 18789 --strict-json --dry-run
openclaw config set gateway.port 18789 --strict-json
openclaw config get gateway.port
The first set checks the proposed document and does not write openclaw.json. The second performs the write. If the schema rejects the value, stop and inspect the field documentation rather than retrying with a different type at random.
Example: changing a string
Strict JSON mode expects a valid JSON string, including its quotation marks. In a POSIX shell, single quotes protect those quotation marks from the shell:
openclaw config set gateway.mode '"production"' --strict-json --dry-run
openclaw config set gateway.mode '"production"' --strict-json
openclaw config get gateway.mode
Without --strict-json, value mode may treat the argument differently and skip the full schema check during a dry run. That makes a dry run weaker than the real write. For automation, prefer strict JSON whenever the value can be represented as JSON.
Example: removing a key
openclaw config get gateway.legacyPort
openclaw config unset gateway.legacyPort --dry-run
openclaw config unset gateway.legacyPort
openclaw config get gateway.legacyPort
Use the dry run to catch an incorrect path before removal. After the real command, verify that the field is absent rather than merely checking that the command exited successfully.
Why --strict-json matters
OpenClaw supports a value mode in which the command-line argument is interpreted without strict JSON parsing. The documentation specifically warns that value-mode dry runs skip the full schema check. Consequently, a command can appear to pass validation and still be rejected, coerced, or found invalid when the real write performs stronger checks.
- Use
--strict-jsonfor numbers, booleans, arrays, objects, and quoted strings. - Keep the same value expression for the dry-run and the real write.
- For a complex object, consider a patch file and run
config patch --file <path> --dry-runso the complete structure is checked before writing. - Do not pass shell-language values such as
true,false, ornullas unquoted text unless that is the JSON value you intend.
Batching several changes
For a coordinated update, use the CLI’s batch-file support rather than issuing unrelated writes one after another. The documented limit for a batch file is 8 MiB. Keep the batch file under version control with secrets excluded, and validate it before applying it:
openclaw config set --batch-file ./openclaw-config-change.batch --dry-run
openclaw config set --batch-file ./openclaw-config-change.batch
The exact batch-file record format is release-specific; obtain it from openclaw config set --help on the installed version and test a small file first. Do not invent a format based on examples for another release. After applying a batch, read every changed path individually and fail the job if any value is unexpected.

If the batch contains a mixture of types, ensure each value is encoded as the type required by the schema. A batch that changes a port, a boolean switch, and an array should not rely on one global string-conversion rule.
Backups, atomic writes, and symlink hazards
OpenClaw-owned writes are atomic: the program writes a replacement and then swaps it into place. This protects readers from seeing a half-written JSON5 file, but it changes how symlinks behave. If ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json is a symlink, an atomic replacement can replace the symlink at that path instead of writing through it to the target. The target file may remain unchanged while the link is lost.
Use a real file at the configured path. If you need centralized storage, point OpenClaw directly at that file with OPENCLAW_CONFIG_PATH rather than creating a symlink. Check the layout before automation runs:
test -L ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json && {
echo "Refusing to edit a symlinked OpenClaw config" >&2
exit 1
}
Take a backup before every automated change, not only before upgrades. A simple POSIX-shell pattern is:
Recommended Free Tools
config_path="${OPENCLAW_CONFIG_PATH:-$HOME/.openclaw/openclaw.json}"
if [ -f "$config_path" ]; then
cp -p "$config_path" "${config_path}.$(date -u +%Y%m%dT%H%M%SZ).bak"
fi
Protect backup files because they contain the same secrets as the live configuration. Do not assume that an application-generated backup is available, recent, or retained for the period your rollback plan requires.
A reusable shell wrapper
This pattern validates one change, applies it, and verifies it. It deliberately stops on errors and refuses to operate on a symlink.
#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -euo pipefail
path="${OPENCLAW_CONFIG_PATH:-$HOME/.openclaw/openclaw.json}"
key="gateway.port"
value="18789"
if [ -L "$path" ]; then
printf 'Refusing symlinked config: %sn' "$path" >&2
exit 1
fi
if [ -f "$path" ]; then
cp -p "$path" "${path}.$(date -u +%Y%m%dT%H%M%SZ).bak"
fi
openclaw config get "$key"
openclaw config set "$key" "$value" --strict-json --dry-run
openclaw config set "$key" "$value" --strict-json
openclaw config get "$key"
For a string, set value to a shell argument containing JSON quotation marks, for example value='"production"'. For an object or array, use a patch file when quoting becomes difficult to audit. In production, add an explicit comparison of the final output with the expected value and send failures to your deployment system.

Doctor checks and repairs
openclaw doctor is the read-only health check. Run it after a configuration change when you need a broader consistency check than a single config get provides:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →openclaw doctor
openclaw doctor --fix applies repairs instead of merely reporting them; --repair is documented as an alias, and --yes skips confirmation prompts. Some third-party documentation reports that a fix run creates ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json.bak and removes unknown keys while listing each removal. Treat that backup as an additional safety net, not as a replacement for your own timestamped backup, and review the planned effect before using an automatic repair in production.
Doctor options are not described consistently across all published guides. Flags such as --deep, --non-interactive, --check, and --list-checks appear in different references, while a reliable official example for doctor --fix --dry-run is not established. Run:
openclaw doctor --help
Use only the flags shown by the installed binary. Do not assume that adding --dry-run to --fix will prevent writes.
What to do after an OpenClaw upgrade
Upgrades can change configuration shape. The built-in updater is described as running configuration migrations and restarting the Gateway; a dry-run preview has been mentioned in third-party changelog material but is not a guarantee for every release. Package-manager-managed installations must be upgraded through their package manager. Official notes for v2026.9.5 state that configuration backups were improved.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use this conservative post-upgrade sequence:
- Confirm which updater owns the installation and upgrade through that mechanism.
- Back up
openclaw.jsonbefore the upgrade. - Run
openclaw doctorand save its report. - Review any migration warnings and compare important paths with the pre-upgrade values.
- Run
openclaw doctor --fixonly after reviewing the proposed repair and confirming that your backup is usable. - Re-run the automated
config getchecks for every setting your deployment depends on.
One third-party changelog guide says that a particular xAI plugin configuration relocation required openclaw doctor --fix after an upgrade or web search could fail silently. That report is not independently confirmed by the release notes, so treat it as a symptom to investigate rather than a universal upgrade rule.
Failure modes and recovery
The command edits the wrong file
Check OPENCLAW_CONFIG_PATH in the job environment and print the resolved path before running a write. A shell launched by a scheduler may not inherit the variable from your interactive session.
Best Value
Dry run passes but the real write fails
Repeat the test with --strict-json. Value-mode dry runs do not perform the full schema check, so a passing result is not sufficient evidence for a typed or structured value.
The value has the wrong type
Look up the field with config.schema.lookup, then encode the argument as strict JSON. A quoted number is a string; an unquoted number is numeric. The same distinction applies to booleans, null, arrays, and objects.
The file appears to revert or the link disappears
Inspect whether the configured path was a symlink. Atomic replacement is expected to replace the path entry rather than follow the link. Restore the backup to a regular file and set OPENCLAW_CONFIG_PATH directly if an alternate location is required.
Doctor removes a setting
Unknown-key removal is a reported behavior of doctor --fix. Restore the pre-change backup if necessary, identify whether the key was renamed or moved by a migration, and consult the schema for the installed release before adding it again.
The configuration is valid but behavior does not change
The setting may be read only at Gateway startup or reload. The available documentation does not map restart requirements to individual keys, so check the component’s operational documentation and restart or reload the Gateway only after confirming the impact.
Operational checklist
- Resolve the active path, including
OPENCLAW_CONFIG_PATH. - Refuse symlinked configuration paths.
- Back up the file with a timestamp and restricted permissions.
- Look up the exact field schema before writing.
- Read the current value with
config get. - Validate with
--strict-json --dry-run, or use a patch file’s dry run for structured edits. - Apply the same command without
--dry-run. - Read every changed path again and compare types as well as values.
- Run the read-only doctor check after upgrades or broad edits.
- Use
doctor --fixonly with a verified backup and flags confirmed byopenclaw doctor --help. - Reload or restart the Gateway when the affected setting requires it.
Bottom line
Reliable OpenClaw configuration automation is a validate–write–verify workflow, not a blind text replacement. Use the CLI against the real JSON5 file, strict JSON validation for typed values, batch files for coordinated edits, and independent backups for rollback. Atomic writes make updates safer for readers but make symlinked layouts unsafe. After upgrades, inspect the migrated configuration with openclaw doctor before deciding whether an automatic repair is appropriate.
