The key boundary is that a function call from the model is a structured request—not an action the model has executed. Your application must validate the request and decide whether to carry it out.
This is an architecture assembled from documented product capabilities, not a vendor-published reference design or a tested deployment. “Real-time” describes the desired workflow; the documentation cited here does not establish end-to-end latency for it.

What each part does
OpenAI function calling proposes structured work
Your application sends the model a request that includes the tools it is allowed to use and their parameter schemas. The model can return a selected tool name and schema-shaped arguments. The application receives that proposal, validates it, and runs the corresponding code if policy allows. It then sends the tool result back to the model when the interaction requires another response. The OpenAI API reference describes tool choice as configurable: it can be automatic, required, or disabled. A function call alone does not read a repository, publish a comment, or perform any other external action.
EventBridge Pipes connects one source to one target
A Pipe is a point-to-point connector: one event source routes to one target. It can filter events, transform their input, and optionally call an enrichment before delivering to the target. AWS documents those capabilities in Amazon EventBridge Pipes concepts (accessed 2026). If the design needs independent routing to multiple downstream consumers, an event bus is the more appropriate pattern than treating one Pipe as a fan-out mechanism.

A practical code-review flow
- Receive repository activity. Get a pull-request or change event into an AWS source supported by Pipes, such as an appropriate queue or stream. Choose the intake based on how your repository provider delivers events and confirm that the selected source is currently supported. The documentation cited here does not establish direct Pipes support for a particular Git provider webhook.
- Filter for review-worthy changes. Configure the Pipe to discard irrelevant event types or repository activity before invoking application logic. Keep the event envelope small and preserve stable identifiers, such as the repository and change request, that the application can use to retrieve context.
- Transform the event into a review envelope. Pass only the fields needed to identify the change and start the review. Do not place credentials or large source archives in the event. AWS documents limitations when JSON has been stringified more than once: nested fields may not be available to filters or input transformers. A Lambda enrichment can parse such content when needed, but avoiding unnecessary encoding is simpler.
- Fetch and constrain repository context. In application code, use authorized credentials to retrieve the relevant diff and only the additional files needed for review. Enforce repository and change-request scope before exposing context to the model.
- Call the OpenAI API with a narrow tool set. Define only the operations needed for the task, with explicit required fields and constrained arguments. For example, a review workflow might expose
get_changed_filesandread_filefor gathering context, then makepost_review_commentorrequest_human_reviewavailable only under appropriate policy. These are conceptual names, not built-in OpenAI tools. - Validate every proposed call and result. Check arguments against the expected schema and application rules, including repository scope, file paths, comment size, and authorization. Treat repository text as untrusted input; it must not expand the model’s permissions. Apply a separate policy check before any side effect, such as publishing a comment or changing a status.
- Record and deliver the outcome. Store the review result with identifiers that let the system correlate it to the originating change. If the application posts comments or updates statuses, make those actions idempotent so duplicate event delivery does not create duplicate effects.
This flow is an engineering design inferred from the documented primitives, not a tested integration. The exact intake, application components, target, and repository-provider setup depend on the deployment.
Choose synchronous enrichment or an asynchronous worker
Pipes invokes enrichment synchronously: it waits for the enrichment response before invoking the target. AWS’s Event enrichment in Amazon EventBridge Pipes documentation (accessed 2026) lists Lambda, API Gateway, API destinations, and Express Step Functions workflows as supported enrichment choices, and limits enrichment responses to 6 MB. Those constraints matter if the enrichment is responsible for a model review: the Pipe remains on that path while the work completes, and the response must fit the limit.

| Pattern | How it works | Design considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Synchronous inline enrichment | The Pipe filters and transforms an event, waits for enrichment, then invokes its target. | Fewer moving parts, but review duration, enrichment timeout behavior, and retry consequences affect the event-processing path. Confirm that the complete response fits the 6 MB enrichment limit. |
| Queue plus asynchronous review worker | The event is accepted for later processing; a worker performs the model review and records or delivers the result independently. | Adds components and state to operate, but separates event intake from a potentially long review. Design for retries, duplicate events, ordering needs, and visibility into pending or failed reviews. |
| Pipe versus event bus routing | A Pipe connects one source to one target; an event bus can support broader routing to multiple consumers. | Prefer a Pipe for a point-to-point path. Consider an event bus when consumers need independent routing rules or fan-out. |
No latency, throughput, cost, or review-quality comparison is established for these patterns. Choose using the expected review duration, ordering requirements, failure handling, and operational model of your workload rather than assuming one is universally faster or cheaper.
Design payloads, batches, and failure handling deliberately
Input transformation can reduce a source event to the fields the review application needs, but the event’s JSON shape affects which fields filters and transformers can access. AWS’s Amazon EventBridge Pipes input transformation documentation (accessed 2026) describes the limitation for doubly stringified JSON. If the provider’s payload arrives in that form, parse it in an application or Lambda step rather than expecting the Pipe to inspect inaccessible nested fields.

Batching is not uniform across Pipes configurations. AWS’s Amazon EventBridge Pipes batching and concurrency documentation (accessed 2026) makes behavior dependent on source and target support; for applicable services, batches may be passed as arrays even when the configured batch size is one. Partial batch failure handling also depends on the source and target combination, with support applying to certain SQS and stream-source cases. Verify the selected combination and decide how the application will distinguish a retryable failure from an event that should be recorded and moved aside.
Scope permissions and protect side effects
The Pipe’s configured IAM role is used for enrichment and target calls. AWS’s Event source permissions for Amazon EventBridge Pipes documentation (accessed 2026) describes source-specific permissions; grant only the actions and resources needed for the chosen source, enrichment, and target. If the application retrieves credentials from Secrets Manager or uses KMS, scope those permissions as well. Keep repository tokens and OpenAI API secrets in a secrets service, not in event payloads.

- Keep the model’s tool list limited to specific review tasks; do not expose arbitrary shell, repository, or network access.
- Validate model arguments and re-check repository and change-request authorization in application code.
- Require policy approval for externally visible actions, particularly posting comments or changing statuses.
- Use idempotency keys or equivalent state checks for actions that must not happen twice after a retry or duplicate event.
- Decide whether review ordering matters and how a newer change should interact with a review already in progress.
Operate and troubleshoot the whole path
Instrument each boundary so an operator can correlate the repository event, Pipe execution, application work, model request, and final target outcome. AWS’s EventBridge Pipes execution steps documentation (accessed 2026) describes execution-step logging that can help locate failures during transformation, enrichment, or target invocation. Configure Pipe logging deliberately and pair it with application and Lambda logs, model request identifiers, and downstream outcome records.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- No review starts: check that the event reaches the configured source, then inspect filtering and transformation outcomes.
- The Pipe fails before target invocation: use execution-step logs to determine whether the issue occurred during transformation or synchronous enrichment; check the Pipe role’s required permissions and the enrichment response size.
- A batch partly fails: confirm the source-target combination’s partial-failure behavior and make retries safe for events already processed.
- A review is missing context or addresses the wrong files: inspect the transformed envelope and application-side repository-scope validation, rather than trusting model-generated arguments.
- Comments are duplicated: use the event and change identifiers to check idempotency handling across retries and repeated delivery.
Before deployment, verify the current Pipes source and target support, the selected model’s tool-interface compatibility, and the repository provider’s event-delivery configuration. Those details are deployment-specific and are not established by the general product capabilities described above.
