You can automate some Android settings on a non-Samsung phone with apps such as Tasker or LlamaLab Automate, but there is no universal switch that lets an app change every setting. What works depends on the exact action, Android version, phone maker, and permissions involved. Start by checking whether your chosen app supports the specific action; some routines need an Android permission, and others may require an ADB setup.
How do I automate Android settings without a Samsung phone?
Think of a routine as three separate parts: a trigger, an action, and the permission needed to perform that action. For example, you might want a routine to run at a certain time and change a sound or connectivity setting. An automation app can offer the trigger while the Android version or phone maker limits the action.

- Name the exact action. Check the automation app’s current action list for the setting you want to change. Do not assume that an app can control a setting just because it can open that setting’s screen.
- Choose a trigger and decide when it must run. Note whether it needs to work with the screen off or without confirmation. Those requirements can affect whether a routine is practical on your phone.
- Check the permission and device requirements. Android defines protected or role-limited permissions, so some actions need access granted in Settings or a development permission. The Android permissions reference explains the platform’s permission model.
- Build and test the routine on your phone. Confirm that the action runs as intended, then check it again after a reboot, an app update, or a permission change.
Tasker and LlamaLab Automate are examples of flexible automation apps, not guarantees of identical features on every device. Compare them by whether they expose your action, what access they request, whether they fit your Android release and phone software, and whether the routine remains reliable after changes. Also consider how easily you can disable the routine or revoke its access.

It depends on the setting and the action Tasker provides for it. Some routines can use app-level capabilities or user-granted Android access; other actions may need additional privileges or may not be available on your configuration. Do not treat “without root” as a promise that every system toggle is available.

App detection may need Usage Stats or Accessibility Service
Tasker documents app detection using Usage Stats or Accessibility Service and explains how to enable the relevant access. Android may ask you to grant that access in Settings. Tasker also notes that a small number of apps and some custom ROM configurations can interfere with detection. See Tasker’s app-detection FAQ for its documented methods and caveats.
Accessibility access is powerful, so grant it only when you understand what the specific app will do with it. Google Play policy permits deterministic, rule-based automation for a narrow, clearly understood purpose, but draws a boundary against autonomous action planning through the Accessibility API. Its guidance says, “This does not prohibit deterministic, rule-based automation, where behavior follows a static, human-defined script (for example, ‘If Trigger X occurs, perform Action Y’).” Read Google Play’s AccessibilityService policy before relying on this access.

Do I need ADB to automate Android settings?
No. ADB is only relevant when the particular action or app requires a development permission. If the app documents such a requirement, follow its current instructions rather than copying a command meant for a different app or Android version. LlamaLab Automate documents granting additional permissions through its privileged service using ADB, or by running the appropriate command from a connected computer. See Automate’s ADB help.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

ADB is a developer tool for communicating with an Android device. As Android’s documentation puts it, “Android Debug Bridge (adb) is a versatile command-line tool that lets you communicate with a device.” A computer-based setup requires enabling the relevant debugging option and authorizing that computer when the phone prompts you. The exact command and permission depend on the app’s instructions; there is no general ADB command that unlocks every Android setting.

Can I use wireless ADB instead of a cable?
On Android 11 and later, Google documents Wireless debugging as a way to pair a phone with a workstation over the same network. The pairing flow uses a pairing code or QR code. USB debugging remains another option, and the phone still requires you to authorize the workstation. Follow Google’s wireless debugging instructions for the supported pairing flow and its USB debugging instructions if you use a cable. Do not assume the Android 11-and-later wireless pairing procedure applies to older releases.
Once an ADB setup is no longer needed, revoke debugging authorizations or the app’s privileged access using the relevant Android developer settings and the app’s instructions. Automate notes that ADB access and keys can be revoked through Android developer settings. Revocation is useful if you stop using the routine or no longer trust the authorized computer.

Why can’t my automation app toggle this setting?
A failed toggle does not necessarily mean the routine is misconfigured. Android’s permission rules, the app’s implementation, the Android release, and the phone maker’s software can all affect whether an action is available. An app may be able to launch a Settings page without having permission to change the setting itself.
- The action is not supported: Check the app’s current action list and help page for the exact setting, not merely a similar feature.
- A permission is missing: Review the app’s instructions and grant only the specific access it requires. For development permissions, use the documented ADB route.
- App detection is unreliable: If the trigger depends on detecting another app, check whether the selected Usage Stats or Accessibility method is enabled. Some apps and custom ROMs may interfere.
- The phone’s software behaves differently: Confirm your Android version and manufacturer software. A feature available on one device may be blocked or implemented differently on another.
- The method depends on an undocumented interface: Avoid relying on hidden or non-SDK interfaces as if they were stable. Android restricts access to these interfaces, and availability can change. See Android’s non-SDK interface restrictions.
Because the target phone and setting determine compatibility, verify the routine on that device rather than relying on a generic list of toggles. Recheck it after a reboot, app update, or permission revocation if continued operation matters.

Are phone routines the same as Google Home automations?
No. Google Home’s Automation API is for home tasks and compatible devices, including Matter traits; it is not a general-purpose API for changing arbitrary phone settings. Use it when the routine is about supported home devices, not as a substitute for a phone automation app. See Google Home’s Automation API documentation.
