How to Auto-Restart a YouTube Stream When FFmpeg Crashes on Vultr

Use a systemd service to relaunch FFmpeg after a failure on Vultr, and learn why output retries and YouTube stream-health checks cover different problems.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run FFmpeg as the main process of a systemd service on your Vultr VPS, then set Restart=on-failure and a short restart delay. That lets systemd relaunch FFmpeg after a qualifying crash. It does not fix every broken stream: a process can remain alive while YouTube receives a stalled or unhealthy feed, so combine process supervision with YouTube’s stream-health checks.

Choose the recovery layer for the failure

There are three different problems that can look like “the stream stopped.” Use the recovery method that matches what failed rather than treating every incident as an FFmpeg crash.

Failure What can detect or recover it What it does not guarantee
FFmpeg exits systemd can restart the service when its main process exits unsuccessfully. It cannot restart a process that is still running, even if its output has stalled.
Output connection has a transient error while FFmpeg stays up FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can retry certain output errors using its recovery options. It is not a substitute for a service manager if FFmpeg terminates.
FFmpeg remains alive but YouTube’s feed is frozen or unhealthy Check YouTube’s received-stream health and the live event; a purpose-built watchdog may be needed to detect and act on a silent failure. Neither exit-triggered systemd restarts nor FIFO retries promise recovery from every platform-side or silent ingest problem.

Systemd’s restart behavior is documented in its service manual; FFmpeg documents FIFO output recovery in its online manual. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and verifying the event itself in its streaming tips.

Run FFmpeg under systemd on the Vultr VPS

The example below is a system-level unit for a Linux VPS using systemd, such as an Ubuntu installation. It assumes FFmpeg is installed and that you already have a working command that sends a video feed to YouTube. The cited systemd documentation establishes the restart semantics; package installation and the exact FFmpeg command depend on your distribution and setup.

1. Find the FFmpeg executable and test your current command

On the VPS, check where FFmpeg is installed with command -v ffmpeg. Use the resulting absolute path in the unit, commonly /usr/bin/ffmpeg. First run your existing FFmpeg command manually and confirm that YouTube receives the feed. A service cannot correct a bad input path, invalid stream URL, incorrect key, or incompatible encoder settings.

2. Create a unit file

Open a new system service file, for example with sudo nano /etc/systemd/system/youtube-stream.service, and use this as a starting point:

[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube live stream
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=YOUR_LINUX_USER
WorkingDirectory=/path/to/your/video
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg YOUR_EXISTING_FFMPEG_OPTIONS_AND_INPUT_AND_OUTPUT
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Replace YOUR_LINUX_USER, the working directory, and the placeholder after ExecStart= with values for your VPS. Put the actual FFmpeg arguments directly on the ExecStart line; systemd does not interpret that line as a shell command. If your command relies on shell pipes, variable expansion, or shell redirection, redesign it for systemd or deliberately invoke a wrapper whose lifetime and exit status remain tied to FFmpeg. FFmpeg should be the service’s main process so systemd can observe when it exits.

Do not put a real YouTube stream key in a public example, shared unit file, or world-readable script. Restrict access to any file that contains the key. YouTube explains that the key is the credential/address an encoder uses to send the feed; if it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. See Manage live stream settings.

3. Load the unit, enable it at boot, and start it

  1. Ask systemd to load or reload unit files: sudo systemctl daemon-reload.
  2. Enable the service so it starts when the VPS boots: sudo systemctl enable youtube-stream.service.
  3. Start it now: sudo systemctl start youtube-stream.service.
  4. Check its state: sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.service.

For a service already running, apply changes to its unit file with sudo systemctl daemon-reload, then restart it with sudo systemctl restart youtube-stream.service. Use sudo systemctl stop youtube-stream.service when you intend to stop it; an explicit systemctl stop is not automatically undone by the restart setting.

4. Confirm that a restart actually works

Inspect recent service output with sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -n 100 --no-pager. To follow new log entries while diagnosing, use sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -f. If you deliberately test recovery, do so when a brief interruption is acceptable: cause FFmpeg to exit, then check systemctl status and the journal for a new start. Also confirm in YouTube Studio that the stream recovered; a running service alone does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.

Set restart behavior deliberately

Restart=on-failure for crash recovery

This is the appropriate starting point when the goal is to recover from a crash. Systemd documents it for nonzero exits, qualifying signals, timeouts, and watchdog expiry. RestartSec=5 above is an example five-second delay, not a universal requirement; choose a delay appropriate to your input, output, and reconnection behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restart=always only for intentional clean exits too

Use Restart=always if a clean FFmpeg exit should also start another run. That can be useful for a command designed to finish and repeat, but it can also create an unwanted restart loop when FFmpeg exits normally. An explicit stop through systemd remains a stop rather than an instruction to relaunch the service.

Use FFmpeg FIFO recovery for transient output errors

A systemd restart starts a new FFmpeg process after termination. If the process remains alive but an RTMP output encounters a transient error, FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer offers a separate in-process recovery path. The FFmpeg manual includes these options in an RTMP recovery example:

-f fifo -fifo_format flv -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1

These are output-side options, not a complete replacement command. Add them at the output portion of your existing FFmpeg command, in the correct position for your muxing setup, and keep the RTMP/RTMPS destination as that output. Exact placement and availability can depend on the command and FFmpeg build. The manual states that max_recovery_attempts defaults to 0 (unlimited); set a limit only if that behavior suits your recovery policy. Validate the revised command before relying on it in the service.

Check YouTube ingest settings and stream health

Before blaming systemd, verify that FFmpeg is sending a supported feed to the current event. In YouTube Studio, confirm the event’s ingest URL, protocol, and stream key, and compare the encoder configuration with YouTube’s current guidance in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • YouTube recommends RTMPS. Use the current ingest details shown for your stream rather than relying on an old URL or a copied key.
  • YouTube’s encoder guidance supports H.264 among its video options and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds.
  • Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends, and choose a resolution and bitrate that your source, VPS, and outbound connection can sustain.
  • Test with audio and video similar to the intended stream before an event, monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators, and confirm that the event is accessible to its intended audience.
  • Keep the stream key private. If you suspect exposure, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the service configuration.

YouTube’s streaming tips recommend upload-bandwidth headroom of 20% above the total stream bitrate and warn that connection interruptions can break a stream. Treat that headroom as YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee against network failures.

Troubleshoot restarts, dropped frames, and a live-but-stalled feed

The service exits repeatedly

  • Read the unit’s recent journal entries with sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -n 100 --no-pager. Correct the FFmpeg error shown there before changing restart policy.
  • Check that ExecStart points to the actual FFmpeg binary, uses valid arguments, and can read the configured input from the specified working directory.
  • Verify the YouTube ingest URL and key in Studio. A stale destination or invalid key will not be repaired by repeated process restarts.

Systemd reports the service active, but the YouTube feed is missing or frozen

Systemd can see that the process is still running; it cannot infer from that alone that the ingest is healthy. Check the stream-health status and the event in YouTube Studio, then inspect FFmpeg output and network connectivity. FIFO recovery may help with certain output errors, but a silent or platform-side failure may need an end-to-end monitor or a watchdog designed to detect it.

The stream restarts too quickly or loops after a clean exit

Check whether the process is exiting unsuccessfully or cleanly in the journal. Keep Restart=on-failure for crash recovery; choose Restart=always only when clean exits should also relaunch. Adjust the example RestartSec=5 delay if the destination needs more time between attempts.

Dropped frames or buffering occur before FFmpeg crashes

Check both outgoing bandwidth and VPS resource pressure. YouTube recommends bandwidth headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. Vultr’s 2025 Ubuntu streaming-server guide is for an OBS scenario rather than an FFmpeg/systemd procedure; in that scenario it warns that CPU pressure can cause dropped frames and buffering and suggests reducing resolution or moving to a plan with more vCPUs. Its below-90% CPU guidance is specific to that OBS scenario, not a universal FFmpeg threshold. See the Vultr guide.
