Before you buy, check the seller and listing together, compare the price with similar items in similar condition, request clear original photos, and confirm that any authentication service actually covers that item and checkout. Pay through the platform’s protected process, then inspect the delivery promptly and follow its dispute deadline. These steps reduce risk; they cannot guarantee authenticity.
What secondhand luxury authentication can—and cannot—tell you
Authentication is an assessment of whether a particular item is genuine, based on evidence such as its construction, materials, markings, model details, and provenance. For a secondhand purchase, you usually have only a listing, the seller’s answers, and whatever verification the marketplace or a specialist offers. That evidence may help you judge risk, but it is not always enough to establish authenticity before you pay.

There is no universal checklist that works across handbags, clothing, shoes, watches, jewelry, and accessories. Details that matter for one model or production period may not apply to another. A logo, serial marking, QR code, box, receipt, dust bag, or certificate may add context, but none should be treated as conclusive by itself. Even an authentication badge is useful only if the specific item and transaction qualify under the service’s current terms.
Brand policy can also limit what a brand will verify after resale. Hermès’ official US authentication FAQ says: “The only way to guarantee the authenticity of an Hermès product is by making your purchase through our official website Hermes.com, at an Hermès store or through an authorized distributor (corner store in a department store, authorized watch dealer, etc.).” The company further says it cannot guarantee or verify authenticity for an item bought outside an official point of sale. That is Hermès’ stated policy, not a rule that should be attributed to every luxury brand.

Check the item, seller, and price before you commit
Establish exactly what is being sold
Start with the precise brand and, where possible, the model or style, approximate period, size, material, and configuration. A description that says only “designer bag” or “luxury shoes” leaves you without enough detail to compare the listing with the item it claims to be. Ask the seller to clarify important details that are missing, and look for consistency between the description and the photographs.
The UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) advises shoppers to check whether photos show relevant labels, tags, sizes, and digital IDs or QR codes where used, and whether the description agrees with the images. These are things to inspect, not universal authentication tests: the presence of a code or label alone does not establish that an item is genuine.
Make a short list of the details that matter for the particular item before messaging the seller. Ask for the exact style or model name if known, the size and material, and an explanation of any feature that appears different from comparable examples. For a used item, also clarify what is included and what condition issues are present. The goal is to make the listing specific enough to evaluate—not to collect paperwork or codes as if one of them settles the question.
Review the seller in context
Look at buyer feedback, the seller’s history, and whether the listings and transaction details seem consistent. Consider whether the seller answers reasonable, specific questions and can provide original photographs of the item. A new account is not proof of dishonesty, just as a long history or positive feedback is not proof that every item offered is genuine. Treat seller information as one part of the evidence rather than a verdict.
Be cautious when the listing relies on generic wording, has few useful photographs, or leaves important details unexplained. A seller who will not answer a reasonable question or provide a clear close-up leaves you with less evidence to assess. Those circumstances raise uncertainty; none proves that an item is counterfeit.
Pay attention to consistency across the seller’s answers, images, description, and transaction details. If a reply does not address the question, or the seller’s explanation conflicts with the listing, ask for clarification before paying. A reasonable seller may not know every production detail, so uncertainty alone is not proof of wrongdoing; the important point is whether you can get enough coherent, item-specific information to make an informed decision.

Compare like with like
Compare the asking price with similar examples of the same or closely comparable item in similar condition. Condition, age, completeness, and the particular model can make secondhand prices differ. A low price alone does not prove that an item is fake. The UK IPO explicitly cautions that a low secondhand price is not necessarily a red flag by itself; a large outlier against comparable listings is a reason to investigate further.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If you cannot find reasonable comparisons, do not treat the lack of comparisons as evidence either way. Ask the seller for more context and consider whether a suitable specialist or marketplace verification service is available before relying on the listing.
Use comparisons to frame questions, not to set a supposed authenticity threshold. An unusually low price may have an ordinary explanation, while a price that resembles other listings cannot establish that an item is genuine. Compare like with like—including condition and completeness—and weigh the answer alongside the seller’s history, the available images, and the protection offered by the checkout route.
Request original, item-specific photos
Ask for clear photographs of the actual item, not just promotional images or pictures that do not show the details you need. What to request depends on the category and model. Useful views may include labels, logos, tags and size markings, stitching, hardware, and any relevant identifying details. Ask for enough angles to assess the claimed condition and to see whether the written description matches what is shown.
Review each image for both detail and consistency: do the photos appear to show the same item, and do visible wear or damage agree with the condition description? If a key part of the item is obscured or no close-up is available, ask for one rather than assuming the unseen detail is correct. A 10x jeweler’s loupe can help you look closely at small markings or workmanship, but it is an optional inspection aid, not an authentication test. It cannot replace a qualified specialist or a verification service that covers the listing.

An original receipt, box, dust bag, serial marking, QR code, or certificate may provide useful context, but it can be separated from the item or fail to establish the item’s identity. The UK IPO lists packaging and certificates as optional extras for sellers, not decisive proof for buyers. Do not let convincing packaging or paperwork substitute for examining the item and the listing as a whole.

Useful photos should answer specific questions: can you read the relevant label or size marking, see the stitching or hardware clearly, and compare the shown condition with the seller’s description? If you receive only distant shots or repeated images that do not show the requested detail, you still have an evidence gap. Ask once more for the missing view and decide whether the remaining uncertainty is acceptable before committing.
Decide whether a verification service covers this purchase
Professional or marketplace authentication can add a safeguard, particularly for a high-value purchase, but services differ in method and eligibility. Confirm the terms for the exact listing, category, buyer location, seller location, and checkout route before treating a badge or service as protection. Eligibility may also depend on an item’s condition or whether it has been modified.
| Route | What the cited source describes | What to verify before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase through a brand’s official point of sale | Hermès says purchases through its official website, a Hermès store, or an authorized distributor are the way to guarantee authenticity of its products. | This is Hermès’ own stated position. It does not establish the authentication policy of other brands or make every resale purchase verifiable by the brand. |
| Marketplace physical inspection | eBay says eligible items are sent to an authentication facility for a physical, multi-step inspection. | eBay’s guidance lists exclusions involving location, site, checkout, category, and modified items. Check the current terms for the specific listing and transaction; not every listing is covered. |
| Marketplace photo review | Mercari describes a third-party review of submitted photographs for selected categories, with specific photo requirements and possible “no verdict” outcomes. | Confirm that the category is selected, the required photos can be supplied, and the service applies to the listing. A no-verdict result is not a confirmation of authenticity. |
| Reseller or specialist service | FASHIONPHILE says its experts use brand-specific inspection and offers an in-person service for ultra-luxury bags and accessories at its flagship locations. The RealReal describes physical examination and technical tools in its own authentication process. | These are company-reported processes, not independent proof of a guarantee. Check current service scope, location, availability, and terms before purchase. |
When comparing routes, ask how the item is assessed: an eligible listing may receive a physical inspection, while another service may review submitted photographs. Those are not identical procedures. Also check which categories and price points qualify, where the buyer and seller must be located, whether payment must use a particular checkout flow, and whether the item’s condition or modifications affect eligibility. A service that is available for one bag listing may not cover another item or transaction on the same marketplace.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck what happens if the service cannot reach a verdict, and distinguish authentication from recourse. A verification step does not automatically explain whether you can return an item, how long you have to raise a concern, or what evidence is required for a refund or dispute. Read those terms separately before relying on a badge or assuming the platform will resolve a problem in a particular way.
The cited descriptions do not establish a universally best marketplace or service. They also do not provide a common fee schedule for comparing these routes: cost is not stated in the cited service descriptions. Check the current price, whether a service is included in the listing or charged separately, and any other terms shown at checkout before deciding. Availability, eligible categories, locations, and terms can change, so use the current terms shown for the actual listing rather than assuming that a service you have seen elsewhere applies.
The UK IPO says that, for added peace of mind when buying high-value fashion items, professional verification services provide an expert safeguard against sophisticated fakes that can be difficult to spot. That is a reason to consider suitable verification, not a promise that every service can detect every counterfeit or that every secondhand item is covered.

Keep the payment and dispute route intact
- Check the transaction terms before paying. Confirm whether the marketplace offers buyer protection for this item and what conditions apply. A verification feature and a refund or dispute policy are separate things; understand both rather than assuming one guarantees the other.
- Use the platform’s integrated checkout. Do not move payment outside the platform if doing so removes its buyer protections. If a seller asks you to pay another way, consider the protection you would lose before proceeding.
- Save the listing and messages. Keep the item description, photographs, seller answers, order details, and tracking information. This preserves the material you may need if the delivered item differs from the listing.
- Check the deadline and reporting method. Find the platform’s current process for raising a concern before the item arrives. Deadlines vary by platform and transaction; do not assume another service’s rules apply.
- Inspect as soon as the item is delivered. Compare it with the listing and the seller’s answers while you still have time to report a problem under the applicable terms.
The UK IPO’s guidance gives Vinted as a specific example: buyers have 48 hours after delivery to report concerns. That is a Vinted-specific period described in UK guidance, not a universal deadline. The same guidance recommends taking close-up photos of labels, logos, and craftsmanship as evidence.

When delivery arrives, compare the item promptly with the saved listing and seller messages; keeping the record together can help you describe a discrepancy clearly if you need to raise one.
What to do if the item looks fake after delivery
- Document what you received. Take clear photographs of relevant labels, logos, workmanship, and any differences from the listing. Preserve the listing, messages, packaging, and order details.
- Use the platform’s process promptly. Report the concern through the platform’s specified dispute or return route and follow its instructions and deadline. Explain the discrepancies you can show rather than making claims you cannot support.
- Keep communication and payment records. Use the platform’s messaging and dispute channels where possible so the relevant discussion remains attached to the transaction.
- Report a suspicious listing through the platform’s reporting tools. If you are in the UK, the IPO’s guidance also points shoppers to Trading Standards and Citizens Advice.
Do not delay while seeking informal reassurance if the platform’s deadline is approaching. The exact remedies and evidence requirements depend on the service and transaction, so follow the current process for the purchase you made.
When documenting the concern, be precise about what you observed: for example, a detail in the delivered item that differs from the listing photograph or description. Keep original images and messages rather than relying on memory or an edited summary. This does not guarantee a particular outcome, but it gives the platform a clearer record to assess under its process.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Red flags are reasons to investigate, not proof
- Price far below comparable listings: ask why and check the model and condition. Price alone does not prove a counterfeit.
- Thin or inconsistent seller information: consider feedback, listing history, responsiveness, and whether the seller can provide original details. A new account or an evasive answer alone does not establish that the item is fake.
- Missing or unclear photos: request relevant close-ups. Poor images, absent details, or a mismatch between photographs and description leave evidence gaps.
- Pressure to pay off-platform: this can remove the protections tied to integrated checkout.
- Packaging, certificates, or codes presented as the whole case: treat them as context, not standalone proof.
- An authentication badge without clear coverage: confirm category, location, checkout, condition, and other eligibility terms for this exact transaction.
One concern does not need to settle the question for you. Instead, use it to decide what to check next: request a missing close-up, ask for clarification, compare prices with genuinely similar items, or confirm whether a service applies. If important questions remain unanswered and you cannot establish a protected route to address a problem, you can choose not to proceed.
What the UK figures say about counterfeit risk
A 2026 UK IPO release reported that one in four UK buyers of pre-loved clothing unknowingly purchased counterfeits in the previous year. It also reported that nearly 60% of those buyers experienced poor quality, rapid deterioration, or refund disputes with the seller. These figures concern UK pre-loved clothing buyers, not every luxury category or resale transaction worldwide.

The same release reported that 45% of 18–24-year-olds had encountered counterfeit designer items on resale platforms, compared with 23% of people aged 55–64. It also said 63% of shoppers felt confident they could spot a fake, while one in three said they did not check authenticity before buying. The displayed release passage does not provide the underlying survey sample size or methodology, so these are reported survey findings, not precise estimates that establish causation or apply beyond their stated population.
The practical lesson is not to distrust every resale listing, but to avoid relying on confidence or one reassuring detail. Use multiple kinds of evidence, choose a verification service only when it genuinely applies, and preserve a workable route to raise concerns if the delivered item does not match the listing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I authenticate a secondhand luxury item from its serial number, QR code, receipt, or packaging?
No single one of these proves authenticity across brands and categories. Labels, tags, digital IDs or QR codes, receipts, boxes, dust bags, and certificates can provide context, but they should be assessed alongside the item, seller, listing, and any suitable verification service.
Is a very low price proof that a designer item is fake?
No. The UK IPO cautions that a low secondhand price is not necessarily a red flag by itself. Compare the item with similar examples in similar condition; a large outlier is a reason to ask questions and investigate, not a verdict.
Does an authentication badge mean every item on a marketplace has been checked?
No. Coverage can depend on category, price, location, checkout route, condition, or modifications. Check the current terms for the exact listing and transaction, and find out whether the service involves physical inspection or photo review.
Can the brand authenticate an item bought secondhand?
Brand policies differ. Hermès says it cannot guarantee or verify the authenticity of an item bought outside an official point of sale, and identifies its own official website, stores, and authorized distributors as the way to guarantee authenticity of its products. Do not assume other brands follow the same policy.
What should I do if a secondhand designer item looks fake after delivery?
Photograph the relevant details and differences from the listing, preserve the listing and messages, and raise the concern through the platform’s dispute or return process promptly. Follow that platform’s deadline; the UK IPO cites Vinted’s 48-hour reporting period as a specific example, not a general rule.

How much does secondhand luxury authentication cost?
The service descriptions covered here do not give a common fee schedule. Check the current listing and service terms for any charge, whether verification is included or separate, and whether the item is eligible before buying.
The Bottom Line
Before buying secondhand luxury, identify the specific item, compare its price with genuinely similar listings, request original close-ups, and assess the seller and evidence together. Use authentication only when the service clearly covers that listing and checkout, pay through the platform’s protected flow, and inspect delivery promptly. No single detail guarantees authenticity, so keep a clear route to raise concerns if the item does not match what was sold.
