To pass Core Web Vitals on mobile, a representative page must meet all three Google “good” thresholds in real-user field data at the 75th percentile: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) of 2.5 seconds or less, Interaction to Next Paint (INP) of 200 milliseconds or less, and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) of 0.1 or less. Check mobile data separately from desktop, then use lab diagnostics to investigate the failing metric. A Lighthouse score alone is not a pass for every visitor.
What “passing” mobile Core Web Vitals means
Google’s recommended thresholds are the same for mobile and desktop. The practical point of a mobile audit is to inspect mobile field data on its own, rather than let stronger desktop results obscure problems experienced by phone users. Google evaluates whether all three metrics are good at the 75th percentile of page loads—not whether one test run looks fast.

| Metric | Good | Poor | What it describes |
|---|---|---|---|
| LCP | ≤ 2,500 ms | > 4,000 ms | How quickly the largest visible content appears |
| INP | ≤ 200 ms | > 500 ms | How promptly the page responds to qualifying interactions |
| CLS | ≤ 0.1 | > 0.25 | Unexpected movement of visible page content |
The thresholds are Google’s current Core Web Vitals guidance, accessed in 2026: Core Web Vitals and Defining the Core Web Vitals thresholds. A pass describes these metrics in the relevant field data; it does not guarantee a search ranking, conversion rate, or identical experience for every person.

1. Check representative URLs in PageSpeed Insights
Choose important pages that reflect different templates or functions on the site—for example, a post, a category page, and a page with interactive features. In PageSpeed Insights, inspect the mobile view and record LCP, INP, and CLS field status separately from the Lighthouse results. Note whether Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) data is specific to the URL or falls back to origin-level data. Origin-level data describes the site more broadly and is less specific to the page being investigated.

2. Use field data to judge visitor experience
Field data aggregates experience from real users. Lighthouse is a controlled lab test, useful for repeatable diagnostics and regression checks, but a simulated page load does not include user interactions and cannot measure INP. Total Blocking Time (TBT) is a lab clue about blocking work on the main thread; it is not an INP score. Lab CLS can also miss shifts that happen later in a real session. Google explains the distinction in its guide to measuring Web Vitals.
3. Change one thing at a time
Begin with the metric that fails and examine the diagnostic information tied to it. Make one targeted change, then repeat the same audit conditions so you can compare results. Check the lab effect first and allow for later field data to show whether real-user experience changed. Avoid toggling several optimization settings at once: if the result improves or worsens, you will not know which change caused it.
If URL-level field data is missing, an origin aggregate can still provide context, but it cannot establish that a particular page passes. A single Lighthouse run also cannot establish a field-data pass.

LCP: the main content appears late
LCP marks when the largest visible image, text block, or video is rendered. Its time can include connection setup and server response, as well as loading and rendering the resource itself. In PageSpeed Insights, inspect the identified LCP element and its timing breakdown before choosing a fix.

- Slow server response: Check hosting resources, server load, and caching configuration.
- Large or inefficient hero image: Check image dimensions and format; optimize the image and serve an appropriate size.
- Theme or plugin overhead: Investigate whether theme features or plugin code are contributing work or delaying the resource.
Image optimization, suitable caching, or more appropriate hosting resources may help when the diagnostic points to them. The WordPress Developer Resources handbook identifies hosting environment, server load, software versions, configuration, themes, plugins, and image sizes as performance factors: Optimization – Advanced Administration Handbook. No one intervention fits every page.
INP: interactions feel delayed
INP measures responsiveness across qualifying interactions during a visit. A page-load lab run cannot provide an INP measurement, so use real-user field data to identify the problem. Browser profiling and TBT can help reveal main-thread blocking, but they are supporting clues rather than substitutes for INP.
Rank #4
On WordPress, investigate complex theme behavior and plugins, then isolate the code associated with a delayed interaction. Avoid deactivating or replacing components blindly: first identify what is involved and consider the effect on site features. Google’s measurement guidance distinguishes field INP from lab proxies, while the WordPress handbook describes themes and plugins among the factors that can affect performance.

CLS: content moves unexpectedly
Look for images, embeds, advertisements, or injected content that appears without space reserved for it. Compare the live experience with lab observations, including after the initial render. A clean first-load screenshot does not prove good field CLS: shifts may happen later or during real use, and a lab test can miss them.

Choose WordPress fixes that match the evidence
WordPress’s handbook recommends considering unnecessary plugins, image optimization and formats such as WebP, file minimization where appropriate, caching, and content offloading. These are investigation options, not guaranteed improvements. Removing a plugin is not automatically beneficial if a replacement performs heavier work. A CDN or cache can also cause correctness problems on dynamic or personalized pages if its behavior is not configured for the site.
Page caching serves static copies of eligible pages to reduce repeated server processing. WordPress documentation notes that managed hosts may already provide server-side caching and that caching can make changes appear stale. Before adding another cache layer, check the host’s current setup and existing plugins; dynamic content makes configuration more involved. Persistent object caching also depends on suitable cache-server support from the host. See WordPress performance optimization guidance and the handbook’s caching guidance.
The handbook offers this practical recommendation: “If you need a quick fix now, go straight to the Caching section, you’ll get the biggest benefit for the smallest hassle there.” That is the handbook’s general guidance, not a guarantee that caching will fix a particular metric or page.

Compare competing fixes before changing the site
When several options might address a failure, compare them against the diagnosed problem rather than their marketing claims. For each proposed change, consider:
- Which field metric and diagnostic it is intended to address.
- Whether it affects mobile users and the representative URLs under review.
- Compatibility with the host, theme, existing plugins, and dynamic or personalized behavior.
- Whether the change is reversible and can be measured before and after under the same conditions.
- Any ongoing cost and operational burden, if software or hosting is involved.
The cited guidance does not establish a universal percentage improvement for a WordPress optimization or a current WordPress-specific share of sites passing mobile Core Web Vitals. Treat improvement as site-specific; report a before-and-after figure only when it has actually been measured, identifying the tool, device mode, URL, date, and whether it is lab or field data.
