Review each app and switch off access to any listed location it does not need. Then check Full Disk Access separately: it is a much broader permission, not just another folder toggle.
How do I see which apps have access to my files on Mac?
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security in the sidebar. Scroll down if necessary.
- Select Files & Folders to see apps with location-specific access.
- Review the locations shown for each app, and turn off any access the app does not need. The controls let you change access by location rather than only switching all file access on or off. See Apple’s Control access to files and folders on Mac.
Apple says apps request permission when they first want to access a protected resource, and you can later change what you share in Privacy & Security. A permission prompt is a decision about a specific kind of access, so consider what the app does and whether the requested location makes sense for that purpose.

What does Files & Folders cover?
Files & Folders controls app access to locations such as Desktop, Documents, Downloads, iCloud Drive, network volumes, and removable volumes. This is an app privacy control, not the same as Finder’s Sharing & Permissions settings. Finder permissions govern file-level rights for user accounts and groups; Privacy & Security governs whether an app is authorized to access protected resources.

What is Full Disk Access on Mac?
Full Disk Access is a separate, broader category in System Settings > Privacy & Security. Apple describes it as access to all files, including data from other apps such as Mail, Messages, Safari, and Home, Time Machine backups, and certain administrative settings for all users. Review this list independently of Files & Folders and leave access enabled only when it fits the app’s purpose. Apple explains the category in Control access to files and folders on Mac.
How do I revoke file access for an app on macOS?
In Privacy & Security > Files & Folders, turn off the specific location the app no longer needs. For broader access, open Full Disk Access and switch off the app there. If a feature stops working afterward, the app may rely on the permission you removed. If you trust the app and the feature justifies the access, restore only the needed permission rather than granting broader access by default.

Can opening one file give an app access without a folder permission?
Yes. Apple’s developer documentation says a user implicitly grants an app access to a file by selecting it in an Open or Save panel, dragging it to the app, or opening it in Finder. That file-specific grant is not necessarily shown as a broad folder authorization in Files & Folders. It does not by itself justify granting Full Disk Access. Which macOS settings path should I use?

Apple documents the version distinction in its macOS security guide. Look for the file-access controls within the Privacy area on older versions; names and organization can differ.

Should I use Terminal to reset an app’s permission?
Usually not for routine auditing. Apple documents tccutil reset mainly for development and testing: it resets a remembered authorization so macOS can ask again. A reset is different from simply turning access off in Settings, and can affect more authorization state than intended.

tccutil reset SystemPolicyDocumentsFolder <bundleID>
Replace <bundleID> with the app’s actual bundle identifier; do not guess it. The command applies to the current user by default. Apple notes that adding sudo can apply a reset to all user accounts. Its developer documentation also identifies SystemPolicyAllFiles for Full Disk Access. Avoid using tccutil reset All as a general cleanup because it resets approvals for all listed protected-resource categories. See Apple’s Inside the Privacy Preferences Database.

- Ask which feature needs the access and whether that need matches the app’s expected purpose.
- Prefer the narrowest useful permission, such as a selected file or a specific location, over Full Disk Access.
- Review the developer’s privacy explanation and practices. Apple notes that third-party apps’ handling of collected information is governed by each provider’s terms and privacy policy. See Control what you share on Mac.
Apple’s documentation describes how to manage these controls but does not provide a statistic on how commonly apps receive file access or how much revoking it reduces risk.
