Audit AI use across the full paid-media workflow—not just the final creative. Inventory the tools and assets, check claims and disclosures, verify platform rules and applicable local labeling requirements, and retain evidence of human review and approvals. An ad’s AI label may improve transparency, but it does not by itself establish legal compliance.
What an AI compliance audit should cover
A paid-media audit should follow AI use from campaign planning through post-launch monitoring. That includes generative tools used to draft copy or create images, video, audio, or synthetic people; editing tools that alter existing assets; and AI-enabled services used for audience selection or campaign optimization. It also includes vendors and services that receive campaign materials or customer data.

The question is not simply whether an ad was “made with AI.” The audit needs to establish what the system did, what consumers will see, whether the ad’s claims and disclosures are sound, which platform and local rules apply, and who approved the final version. The exact legal duties depend on the advertiser, jurisdiction, audience, industry, campaign category, and creative format; this guide is an operational framework, not a legal determination.
Step 1: Define the audit and inventory AI use
Set a scope before reviewing individual ads. Choose the campaigns, accounts, markets, platforms, and time period to include. For each campaign, create an inventory entry for every AI tool or workflow involved. A single campaign may use one system to draft text, another to generate images, platform automation to optimize delivery, and an external vendor to process inputs.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
Record enough detail to trace each use and assign an accountable owner. This inventory is a practical control, not a universal regulator-prescribed form.
- Campaign and placement: campaign or account identifier, channel, ad format, and where the asset is intended to appear.
- Tool and vendor: product or service, provider, model or tool version if known, and whether it is an external service.
- AI task: drafting, generation, editing, synthetic voice or person, targeting, audience selection, optimization, or another use.
- Assets and inputs: source brief, text, images, footage, audio, product information, and any customer or campaign data sent to a tool.
- Audience and geography: intended audience, markets, and whether children or other protected groups could be reached.
- Accountability: business owner, creative owner, reviewer, approver, and the person responsible for checking the live ad.
Do not treat “AI used” as a sufficiently precise inventory entry. Distinguish routine editing from generated or altered content that could affect a consumer’s understanding of what is real. Record the specific asset and task: for example, whether a system corrected a typo, changed a product depiction, generated a testimonial-style voice, or altered a person’s appearance.
Step 2: Review the ad’s claims and disclosures
Review the actual output, not just the prompt or creative brief. AI authorship does not remove the advertiser’s need to check whether an ad is truthful, supported, and clear. The Federal Trade Commission’s Online Advertising and Marketing guidance and its Endorsement Guides: What People Are Asking explain that truth-in-advertising principles apply across media, including social media, and that endorsement principles apply there as well.
Check each express and implied claim
List what a reasonable viewer could take away from the creative, including implications created by the image, voice, setting, or editing. Compare each material claim with reliable support available to the advertiser. Check prices, performance descriptions, product attributes, availability, offer terms, and any required qualifications. A generated visual can communicate a claim even if the accompanying copy does not state it directly.

- Is each factual statement accurate and substantiated?
- Could the image, edited footage, or synthetic voice imply a result, feature, or experience that is not supported?
- Are price, eligibility, limitations, and other material offer terms presented clearly and where viewers can notice them?
- Could the overall presentation mislead even if individual sentences are technically accurate?
Review endorsements and testimonials carefully
If an ad uses a synthetic person, voice, or testimonial-style presentation, determine whether viewers could mistake it for a real person describing a genuine experience. Check whether the claimed experience is real and whether the claims have adequate support. Also review whether any relationship between the speaker and advertiser that matters to consumers is clearly conveyed. Do not assume that a disclosure about AI, by itself, answers questions about the truth of an endorsement or the speaker’s relationship to the advertiser.
The FTC’s Endorsement Guides explain the agency’s approach to endorsements and disclosures. They are guidance for evaluating advertising practices, not a substitute for assessing the specific facts and applicable law. For campaigns where a synthetic presentation could materially affect consumer interpretation, document the reasoning and seek qualified legal review when appropriate.
Step 3: Check platform rules and labeling controls
For every channel, format, and campaign category, verify the current platform policy and the controls available in the account. Do this for the final asset and placement, not just the tool that created it. Platform policy can apply regardless of whether the content was generated by AI.
Google Ads
Google Ads states that advertising content remains subject to Ads Policy regardless of how it was created, and that generative AI content receives the same content standards, review, and enforcement. Its policy guidance also warns that generative AI may produce inaccurate or offensive material. A platform review or approval should not replace the advertiser’s own accuracy and compliance checks.

Google’s July 9, 2026 update describes text or visual labels for certain AI-generated or modified image and video ads, as well as an AI-label setting rolling out across products. The update gives the EU, India, and New York as examples of places where rules require disclosures and/or labels for certain AI-generated or edited ad assets. It does not provide a complete inventory of applicable laws, triggers, exceptions, or effective dates. Confirm the requirements for the specific campaign and location rather than treating those examples as a complete legal checklist.
Google explicitly cautions that using its AI label setting does not guarantee compliance with specific regulations. Treat the control as one part of a disclosure process, not as a legal safe harbor or proof that all required information is present.
Meta ads
Meta’s June 1, 2026 update says its “About this ad” experience is being expanded and that it will begin automatically detecting some ads created or edited with third-party AI tools through industry-standard signals. Meta says the experience may vary by region. The update does not establish that every AI use will be detected or labeled. Inspect the live ad and the relevant account controls rather than assuming an automated label will appear.

Use a platform-by-platform check
| Audit question | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Which policy applies? | Current advertising policy for the channel, format, and campaign category, including any applicable political or sensitive-category constraints. |
| Is a label or disclosure required? | Platform controls and the applicable rules for the ad’s geography, asset type, and audience. Do not infer legal requirements from a platform label alone. |
| What will viewers see? | The rendered ad and disclosure in the live placement, including how the information appears on the actual device or format. |
| Can the platform detect this use? | Whether detection or labeling is stated to cover the particular type of creation or edit. Do not assume automatic detection is comprehensive. |
| Who verifies the result? | A named person who checks the final platform state and records any required correction. |
Step 4: Decide when the creative needs an AI disclosure
Do not apply a single yes-or-no rule to every AI use. Assess the creative’s format, the extent and nature of the alteration, the audience, the applicable platform controls, and local requirements. The IAB’s January 2026 AI Transparency and Disclosure Framework is a voluntary industry framework that offers format-specific treatment and distinguishes routine production from uses it regards as disclosure-relevant. It is not binding law.

For each asset, record the decision, the reasoning, and the person responsible. If disclosure is required or appropriate, check that it is clear in the context where the ad appears and does not obscure or contradict other material terms. Where more than one rule or platform mechanism applies, identify which control addresses which requirement; do not assume one label satisfies all of them.
A useful decision record answers these questions:
- What AI-created or AI-modified element is present?
- Could that element change a viewer’s understanding of whether a person, event, product feature, or experience is real?
- Which platform rules and local requirements apply to this audience and placement?
- What disclosure or platform label is being used, and where will viewers see it?
- Who confirmed the final rendered version and documented the decision?
Step 5: Keep records that make decisions auditable
Retain evidence that lets someone reconstruct how the live creative was produced, reviewed, and approved. The IAB framework recommends provenance metadata and places responsibility for disclosure assessment and labeling with advertisers, while recognizing that platforms operate their own enforcement systems. These are industry recommendations, not a statement of binding legal recordkeeping duties.
For each material asset or workflow, preserve the relevant records:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Prompt or source brief, where appropriate, and the tool or model version used.
- Input assets and generated outputs, including significant variants considered.
- Human edits made after generation and the final approved creative.
- Substantiation for material claims and the basis for any endorsement or testimonial presentation.
- Disclosure decision, applicable platform control, and rationale for the decision.
- Reviewer and approver identities, approval time, and any escalation or legal review.
- Final live placement or a capture showing how the ad and disclosure rendered.
Keep records proportionate to risk and consistent with your organization’s retention and data-handling rules. Avoid collecting or retaining sensitive inputs merely to create an audit trail; determine separately what data the tool receives and what obligations apply to that processing. The platform sources and industry framework cited here do not decide a particular advertiser’s data-processing duties.
Best Value
Step 6: Monitor the ad after launch
Approval is a point in time; the live campaign can change. Recheck placements after launch and after material edits, including changes made by automated campaign features. Confirm the asset is still the approved version, disclosures remain visible, platform status has not changed, and targeting still matches the approved audience and geography.
Use a defined monitoring cadence appropriate to the campaign’s risk and duration. The IAB framework recommends governance, checklists, standardized labels, metadata capture, and ongoing monitoring as implementation practices. It also describes implementation milestones of 60 days, six months, and 12 months; these are roadmap recommendations in that framework, not measured outcomes or legal deadlines.
When a problem appears, record what was live, where and when it appeared, the issue identified, who made the correction, and when the correction took effect. Escalate misleading claims, missing material disclosures, unexpected synthetic depictions, or policy concerns promptly. Re-review the corrected asset rather than assuming a platform edit resolved the underlying issue.

If an organization has several campaigns, vendors, or markets, use consistent comparison factors so review effort goes to the highest-risk uses. The table is a triage aid, not a legal risk score; the sources do not establish a universal scoring formula.
| Factor | What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Jurisdiction and audience | Markets reached, audience characteristics, and whether children or other protected groups may see the ad. | Disclosure and other obligations can vary by place and audience. The sources cited here do not provide a complete jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction legal inventory. |
| Format and authenticity impact | Text, image, video, audio, synthetic people, and altered depictions; how much the change could affect a consumer’s view of what is real. | The IAB framework treats formats differently and distinguishes routine production from uses it regards as disclosure-relevant. |
| Platform and campaign category | Platform policy, available label mechanism, campaign-category restrictions, and who can verify the final state. | Policies and controls differ, and platform review does not settle all legal questions. |
| Claims and data | Factual or regulated claims, supporting evidence, sensitive inputs, and external vendor access. | Claims need advertiser review; the reviewed platform sources do not establish a specific advertiser’s data-processing obligations. |
| Control evidence | Named owner, human review, disclosure rationale, provenance record, and post-launch monitoring. | These records help demonstrate who made the decision and what was checked. |
Common audit failures and how to correct them
- Checking only the generated file: review the ad as it appears in the placement, including accompanying copy, labels, and offer terms.
- Treating an AI label as proof of compliance: separately assess claims, disclosures, platform policy, and applicable local rules.
- Assuming a platform will detect every AI asset: confirm what the platform says its detection covers and inspect the live ad yourself.
- Approving a claim because the AI produced it confidently: require evidence for material factual claims and remove or correct unsupported implications.
- Keeping no version history: preserve source inputs, meaningful edits, approvals, and the final live version so reviewers can trace the decision.
- Ignoring changes after approval: recheck assets, targeting, and disclosures after campaign or automated-feature changes.
Build a repeatable audit checklist
Use the following checklist for each campaign or material creative change. Adapt it to the relevant jurisdiction, platform, and organization rather than treating it as a legal checklist that applies identically everywhere.
- Scope: identify campaign, channel, format, geography, audience, owner, and review period.
- Inventory: document every AI tool, task, vendor, input, and affected asset.
- Creative review: inspect final text, visuals, audio, and implied claims for accuracy, substantiation, offer terms, and misleading effects.
- Endorsement review: verify that any experience presented is genuine or adequately supported and that relevant relationships are clear.
- Rules: check current platform policy and identify applicable local labeling or disclosure requirements for the campaign.
- Disclosure: document whether a disclosure is needed, what it says, where it appears, and who verified the rendered result.
- Approval: record reviewer, approver, decision time, and any escalation.
- Evidence: retain appropriate prompts or briefs, tool and version details, inputs, outputs, edits, substantiation, and final creative.
- Launch check: capture the live placement and verify status, audience, targeting, and disclosure display.
- Monitoring: schedule checks and record incidents, edits, corrections, and their completion.
When to get campaign-specific legal advice
Escalate questions that turn on local law, regulated claims, political or sensitive categories, synthetic endorsements, children or protected audiences, or the handling of personal or sensitive data. Google’s July 2026 update names the EU, India, and New York as examples related to disclosure or labeling rules, but does not enumerate every law, trigger, exception, or effective date. Meta’s description of detection and labels also notes regional variation. Confirm the current rule for the particular campaign with qualified counsel rather than extrapolating from a platform feature or a general industry framework.
Because no jurisdiction, industry, audience, or campaign is specified here, this framework cannot decide whether a particular ad is compliant. Its purpose is to make the advertiser’s review, rationale, approvals, and follow-up concrete and traceable.
