To audit an AI agent, record not only what it did but who or what authorized it, which agent and model were involved, what inputs informed the action, and which tools or resources it used. During an incident, preserve those records and correlate them with identity, application, infrastructure, and provider logs to build a timeline. There is no settled universal audit schema for AI agents: use established audit-record practices as a baseline, then add the identity, authority, provenance, and tool-call context your deployment needs.
Why AI-agent activity needs more than an ordinary action log
An AI agent combines model output with software capabilities and can take actions that affect real systems. Its security risks therefore include familiar software vulnerabilities as well as AI-specific problems such as adversarial inputs, compromised or insecure models and data, and behavior that is misaligned with its intended purpose.

A record saying that an agent called a tool may establish that the call occurred, but not necessarily why the model chose it, what authority permitted it, or which external content influenced it. NIST’s January 2026 request for information on securing AI agent systems describes these risks and the need to constrain and monitor agent access. Its May 2026 summary reports stakeholder views; it is not a binding standard. Treat logs as evidence of recorded events, not automatic proof of intent or complete explanation.

Scope the agent, its access, and its authority
Before choosing fields to log, map the deployment. Establish whether it is enterprise-managed, locally deployed, or operated by an external provider; the organization’s ability to collect records and control access can differ substantially across those arrangements. NIST’s February 2026 concept paper on software-agent identity raises questions about identification, authorization, auditing, and non-repudiation. It proposed a project rather than finalized requirements, and its comment period ended April 2, 2026.

- Identify which system holds each relevant record: agent runtime, model or provider, identity provider, tool or API, application, network, cloud control plane, or endpoint.
What to capture in an AI-agent audit trail
Start with the baseline in NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 3 (2024): audit records should capture event type, time, place, source, outcome, and associated identities or entities. Its discussion also identifies useful context such as timestamps, source and destination addresses, process identifiers, event descriptions, file names, and invoked access or flow rules. Apply the standard in the context relevant to your system; it does not define one universal AI-agent event schema.
For agent workflows, extend that baseline so investigators can connect an action to its initiator, authority, inputs, and effects. The table is a practical design synthesis, not a list of fields mandated together by one standard.

- One Unified Security System, Powered by 1st-Gen aosuBase: 32GB of local storage comes ready to use, holding about 120 days of loop recording. No subscription required. Connect up to 4 cameras to one base with a stable wireless connection and centralized local storage. Recordings saved to aosuBase are event-based, triggered by detected activity.
- Multi-Cam Live View for All-at-Once Monitoring: Watch up to four live camera feeds simultaneously in the aosu app and monitor multiple areas on one screen without opening each camera individually. Live View is available through the aosu app only; the base does not support HDMI or TV output.
- 360° Coverage with Pan, Tilt, and Smart Auto Tracking: Pan and tilt to see all around your property. When activity is detected, the camera automatically follows people and other movement to keep the action in view while recording, giving you a more complete view of what happens around your home.
- 2K (3MP) Clarity with Full-Color Night Vision: Capture clear details in 2K and zoom in up to 6x for a closer look. Built-in spotlights enable full-color night vision, helping you see important color details like clothing and vehicles after dark. For more discreet monitoring, switch to infrared mode for black-and-white night vision without visible lighting.
- Quick Setup with a Pre-Paired System: Connect aosuBase to your router's LAN port with the included Ethernet cable. Cameras connect wirelessly to aosuBase instead of your home Wi-Fi. The system comes pre-paired, so simply power on the cameras and complete setup in the app without pairing each camera one by one. The cameras are designed to work with the included aosuBase, and add-on cameras connect through the base as well.
| Record area | Capture | Investigation question it helps answer |
|---|---|---|
| Event and time | Event type, timestamp, source, outcome, and relevant destination or target. Preserve the time source or timestamp quality where it matters to correlation. | What happened, when, where, and with what result? |
| People and agent identity | Human initiator or approver; agent identity and version; model identity, version, and provenance where available. | Which human, agent, and model were associated with this run? |
| Authority and policy | Credential used for each action, relevant permissions, delegation chain, governing policy, and approval or authorization decision. | What authority permitted the action, and was it delegated or approved? |
| Inputs and provenance | Instruction or prompt provenance and the untrusted inputs or retrieved content relevant to the action. Where applicable, retain evidence or citations supporting a material factual output or decision. | What information could have influenced the agent, and what evidence supported its output? |
| Tool and resource activity | Tool or resource invoked, action category or arguments, target, timestamp, result, and any error or denial. | What capability did the agent use, against which resource, and what happened? |
| Workflow relationships | Links connecting the parent run, child agent, tool call, and resulting system-side event. | Which later action or system change followed from this run? |
NIST’s experimental work on evaluation probes explores machine-readable trails that connect agent outputs and decisions to supporting source evidence, with checks for faithfulness, completeness, and sufficiency. That is an approach under development, not a finalized audit standard. Comments on the NCCoE concept paper also call for richer records of tools, resources, identity, delegation, provenance, and tamper-evident evidence; stakeholder comments are proposals, not adopted control requirements.
Prepare collection, retention, access, and failure handling
Logging must be designed before an incident. NIST defines log management as the process of generating, transmitting, storing, accessing, and disposing of log data, and connects it to identifying and investigating incidents. NIST SP 800-92 Rev. 1 is a draft planning guide, not a finalized revision.

- Map questions to sources. For each event you need to investigate, identify which runtime, identity, provider, tool, application, network, cloud, or endpoint system can answer it. Decide how records from those systems will be associated.
- Set retention deliberately. Align retention with organizational policy and likely detection and investigation needs. Account for records held by external providers and for the possibility that one repository retains data for less time than another.
- Protect records and limit exposure. Restrict access to audit data and collect only the detail needed for audit and investigation. Agent records may include prompts, identities, sensitive data, and security-relevant context.
- Make collection failure observable. Plan alerts and a response for collector interruption, capture errors, and storage exhaustion. NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 3 calls for notifying assigned personnel within an organization-defined time when logging fails, and selecting additional actions appropriate to the failure.
- Check the trail before relying on it. Verify that expected events arrive, timestamps can be interpreted, records can be correlated, and access and retention controls work. A missing record may reflect a collection gap rather than proof that an event did not occur.
How to investigate suspicious or harmful agent activity
- Preserve the relevant evidence. Collect agent traces, identity and authentication events, tool and API calls, application and infrastructure records, and the relevant model and configuration versions. Record the repositories and time ranges collected, along with known gaps.
- Build a common timeline. Normalize timestamps carefully and correlate records across repositories. Link the initiating run to delegated or child-agent activity, tool calls, and resulting system-side events where the records permit.
- Reconstruct the authority chain. Identify who initiated or approved the run, which identity and credential were used for each call, what permissions applied, and whether authority was delegated as expected.
- Trace inputs and decisions. Review relevant instructions, retrieved material, and external or untrusted content alongside policy decisions and approval records. Separate recorded evidence from interpretations about why the model acted.
- Trace actions and outcomes. Identify each tool or resource, the target and action, the result or denial, and subsequent system changes. Compare the observed activity with the agent’s authorized scope and applicable policy.
- Test plausible hypotheses. Look for unauthorized access, unusual privilege use, prompt injection or other adversarial content, unexpected delegation, policy bypass, or harmful behavior without an external attacker. These are investigative possibilities, not conclusions established by the presence of an agent log.
- Report confidence and limitations. Distinguish observed facts from inference. Document missing records, failed logging, uncertain timestamps, retention limits, and any unavailable provider data; do not claim a complete reconstruction when the evidence is incomplete.
Logging is only one part of deployed-agent monitoring
Audit records support retrospective review, but monitoring deployed AI systems is broader than logging. In March 2026, NIST described six categories of monitoring and identified fragmented logs as a barrier, while noting open questions about monitoring cadence and its relationship to auditing. The practical implication is to plan how teams will review and correlate signals, not merely where records will be stored. The cited material does not establish a single monitoring cadence for every deployment.

What an agent audit trail can and cannot establish
A well-designed trail can connect an event to a time, source, outcome, identities, authority, relevant inputs, and tool activity, then help investigators correlate those facts with changes elsewhere in the environment. It cannot guarantee that every event was recorded, recover data that was never retained, or by itself establish the model’s internal reasoning. The defensibility of a conclusion depends on the quality and coverage of records, the links among systems, and a clear account of uncertainty.
