A token can carry serious risks beyond price volatility—including weak liquidity, concentrated control, platform failure, security problems, legal uncertainty, and fraud. Due diligence can reveal unanswered questions; it cannot eliminate the possibility of losing your investment.
Start by identifying exactly what you are evaluating
Write down the token’s name, ticker, network, and contract address. Verify these details against an authoritative project or network source: names and tickers can be reused, so a match alone does not establish that you have found the right asset.

Then describe, in plain language, what the token is supposed to do and what rights it gives you, if any. Ask who can change the software or rules, and which promised functions depend on a team, company, or other third party doing future work. A token label does not answer these questions.
The SEC’s materials describe categories including digital commodities, collectibles, tools, stablecoins, and digital securities. A category is not a substitute for examining the specific token and how it was offered.

Test whether the use case is real—and whether the token matters to it
Separate what works now from what is promised
Compare the project’s current, observable functions with its roadmap. Treat future features, adoption targets, and planned partnerships as uncompleted claims until there is independent evidence that they exist and operate as described.
Look for a link between the product and demand for the token
- Is the token necessary to use the product, or is it optional?
- What alternatives can users choose instead?
- If the product succeeds, is there a clear reason that demand for the token would also increase?
- Does the explanation rely on assumptions about future users, revenue, or token value that cannot yet be checked?
A white paper, exchange listing, large social following, audit badge, or reserve attestation may provide claims or limited evidence to investigate; none is, by itself, proof that a token is safe. The SEC has specifically cautioned that proof-of-reserves reports and their underlying reviews are not equivalent to financial-statement audits.
Check who controls the supply and the rules
Find the project’s stated supply and allocation information, then note what is disclosed and what you can independently verify. Relevant details include:

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Whether there is a maximum supply or issuance is uncapped, and how new tokens are issued.
- How much is allocated to founders, insiders, investors, a treasury, or the public.
- Any lockups and scheduled unlocks that could increase the amount available to sell.
- Who can mint or freeze tokens, upgrade contracts, or otherwise change token behavior.
- Whether credible, observable information about ownership or control aligns with the disclosures.
Concentrated or opaque ownership and control can matter to investors. The SEC identifies these as risks in the context of crypto-asset securities; they are useful issues to investigate, not proof that every token has the same legal status.

Assess whether you could sell or use the token when you need to
A displayed price or reported trading volume does not establish that you can sell your own holdings at that price. Look at whether trading occurs on multiple independent venues, whether the available liquidity is sufficient for the size of transaction you expect, and whether a venue can halt trading, restrict withdrawals, or delist the token.
Consider what would happen if a venue stopped supporting it or buyers disappeared. Volatility, slippage, illiquidity, and the possibility that a market disappears are recognized crypto-asset risks in SEC investor materials. If you cannot identify a credible route to sell or use the token, treat that as a substantive uncertainty—not a minor inconvenience.
Understand the legal question in the relevant jurisdiction
Consider who issued or promoted the token, where and how it was offered, and what rights or promises accompanied the sale. Do not conclude that a token is—or is not—a security based only on its name, a project’s label, or a checklist. Legal treatment depends on the facts and jurisdiction; the cited SEC materials concern the United States and do not resolve the law elsewhere.

The SEC’s “Regulation Crypto Assets” page describes a proposed rule issued in August 2026, with comments due October 20, 2026. It is a proposal, not a final effective rule. A proposal’s status can change, so check the current SEC materials rather than treating proposed requirements as settled law.
Compare how you would hold or access the asset
Custodial platform or self-custody
| Issue | Custodial platform | Self-custody |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls access | The platform controls the keys used to access assets held for customers. | You control the private keys, directly or through wallet software. |
| Main added risk | Counterparty, operational, insolvency, lending, fraud, or withdrawal-restriction risk. | Loss, theft, or compromise of keys and backups; mistakes may be difficult to reverse. |
| What to examine | Customer agreement, legal claim to assets, whether assets may be lent or reused, withdrawal conditions, fees, and insolvency treatment. | Key control, backup and recovery procedure, device security, and what happens if access is lost. |
Crypto interest-bearing accounts do not have the same protections as bank or credit-union deposits and may expose assets to lending, insolvency, fraud, or operational failure. A wallet manages access keys; it does not itself store the crypto asset. The SEC’s December 12, 2025 custody bulletin says: “Never share your private keys, or seed phrases.” Custody choices change who bears particular access and counterparty risks; they do not establish that the token is a sound investment.
Direct ownership or an exchange-traded product
If you are comparing direct ownership with an exchange-traded product, compare the wrapper’s custody and platform exposure, fees, trading hours and liquidity, tracking and price exposure, and applicable investor protections. The SEC’s bulletin addresses bitcoin and ether exchange-traded products: it says those products remain speculative and volatile, and that an ETP may reduce some direct wallet and platform risks while adding product fees and other wrapper-specific risks. Do not assume that its coverage applies to every token or every product.
Screen for fraud and pressure tactics
Independently verify the identity and registration claims of people and entities involved. Be especially cautious when someone you did not expect to hear from introduces an investment through social media or text, builds a relationship before pitching it, impersonates an official or expert, promises guaranteed returns, creates urgency, or tells you to send crypto to an address they provide.

The SEC warns that proceeds from crypto scams can be difficult to trace and recover. Do not use contact details or verification links supplied by the person making the pitch as your only check.
Write down what would change your mind
Before making a decision, record the evidence that supports your view and the facts that remain unverified. Then write down:
- What evidence would disprove the investment thesis?
- What could make the token unusable, untradeable, or inaccessible?
- How much could you afford to lose entirely?
- Which reliable sources would alert you to changes in the project, its controls, market access, or legal position?
If a core claim cannot be checked independently, keep it marked as uncertain rather than replacing missing evidence with confidence. The SEC’s March 23, 2023 investor alert states: “The only money you should put at risk with any speculative investment is money you can afford to lose entirely.” That is a general warning, not individualized financial advice.
