How to Assess Data-Center Storage Demand Before Buying Storage Stocks

Capacity shipments, revenue, facility indicators, and company financials answer different questions. Use them together to assess data-center storage demand without treating growth as a stock recommendation.

To judge whether data-center storage demand is growing, compare what storage suppliers ship with what they earn, what customers disclose, and whether data-center construction and power capacity can support deployments. Then test whether that demand becomes durable company revenue, margins, and cash flow. No single indicator establishes industry-wide demand or makes a stock a buy.

What does “storage demand” actually mean?

It can refer to several different things: buyers needing more storage capacity, suppliers shipping more drives or systems, or a vendor generating more revenue from data-center customers. Those measures are related, but they are not interchangeable.

  • Capacity shipped, often reported in exabytes, measures the amount of storage capacity a supplier delivered.
  • Units shipped counts physical drives or systems. Units can stay flat while capacity rises if customers buy higher-capacity products.
  • Revenue also reflects prices, product mix, and the supplier’s customer and product portfolio. Revenue growth alone does not isolate demand.

Seagate Technology Holdings reported 789 exabytes of HDD capacity shipped in FY2026 and described sustained demand for high-capacity nearline drives from global cloud customers. That is a company-reported annual shipment measure—not a global market total—and it does not by itself show how many drives were sold or how profitable those shipments were.

Which supplier metrics are most useful?

Read shipment, revenue, and financial measures together, and compare like with like: the same fiscal period, product category, and end market. Supplier filings and management commentary provide evidence about those companies; they are not an independent census of the storage industry.

Measure What it helps establish What to check
Exabytes shipped Capacity delivered by a supplier Fiscal period, drive category, and end market; it does not show unit volume or profit by itself.
Drive units and average capacity Whether rising capacity reflects more drives, larger drives, or both Look for unit shipments and average capacity alongside exabytes.
Cloud or data-center revenue How much business a company reports from relevant customers or markets Separate end-market revenue from client and consumer businesses; check whether growth comes from units, prices, or mix.
Average selling price and product mix How product selection and realized pricing affect revenue A higher average selling price can reflect a shift to higher-capacity products or pricing, not necessarily more underlying demand.
Gross margin, cash from operations, capital spending, and inventory Whether reported demand is translating into financial returns and what investment it requires Compare trends over time and read management’s explanation of changes.
Customer concentration and order commentary How dependent a supplier is on major buyers and whether orders appear steady Note large-customer exposure, inventory corrections, delayed deployments, cancellations, and long-term agreements where disclosed.

Use supplier examples carefully

Western Digital reported 65% growth in cloud revenue in FY2025, attributing the increase primarily to higher unit shipments of high-capacity enterprise products and higher average selling prices. Its FY2025 filing also said its ten largest customers represented 68% of net revenue. The first figure combines volume and pricing effects; the second shows why strong reported cloud demand may leave a supplier exposed to a small group of buyers.

Customer commentary can help explain what sits behind the figures. Record whether a supplier describes sustained orders, customers working through inventory, delayed installations, or cancellations. Treat those statements as management’s account of its own business, not proof that every storage vendor is seeing the same conditions.

How can data-center construction and power conditions corroborate demand?

Facility indicators help test whether customers are expanding data-center infrastructure, but they do not measure purchases of drives or storage systems. CBRE Research reported that North American primary-market data-center vacancy was 1.6% in H1 2025 and that 74.3% of capacity under construction in those markets was preleased. These figures describe a specific geography and period, not storage demand directly.

Read vacancy, net absorption, preleasing, construction, and power availability together. In its H1 2025 North American report, CBRE said power availability and infrastructure delivery timelines were decisive factors in site selection, leasing, and pricing. Tight capacity and preleasing can support the case for deployment, while limits on power or construction can delay it even when customers want infrastructure.

Do HDD, flash, and systems suppliers benefit in the same way?

No. Storage demand is shaped by workload requirements and economics. HDDs remain a mass-capacity option; flash-based products compete for some uses historically served by disk, while storage-system and broader data-center suppliers may earn revenue from a wider bundle of equipment. Demand growth for one workload does not guarantee equal growth for every vendor.

Supplier type Questions to investigate
HDD-oriented How much business depends on high-capacity nearline drives? Are capacity shipped, unit shipments, prices, and margins moving together?
SSD or all-flash Which performance-sensitive, low-latency, or other workloads are customers adopting? What are the capacity, power, and total-cost trade-offs?
Storage-system vendor How much revenue comes from data-center deployments, and what do margins, working capital, and order timing show about the quality of that growth?
Broader data-center supplier How much reported growth is specifically tied to data-center customers, and how much depends on other products, components, or a few large orders?

Compare capacity economics, access performance, power use, cooling, rack space, system architecture, and the workload being served. Pure Storage describes expanding all-flash into use cases historically served by disk and identifies cloud-native applications and AI adoption as storage trends. That is evidence of a supplier’s strategy and view of competition—not independent proof that flash will broadly displace HDDs.

How does demand translate into a stock-relevant business?

More shipments can be a positive operating signal without producing proportionate revenue growth, profit, or shareholder returns. Check whether a supplier is converting demand into realized revenue and gross margin, generating cash after investment, and adding capacity sustainably. Also assess inventory, working-capital needs, customer dependence, pricing pressure, component availability, and the timing of large orders.

Super Micro Computer reported FY2026 year-over-year net sales growth of 77.8%, attributing it primarily to fulfilling and shipping orders supporting customers’ data-center deployments. Its reported gross margin declined from 11.1% to 10.8%. The example shows why sales growth and margin should be considered together; its filing also discusses risks involving large orders, suppliers, and customers.

A business can benefit from expanding data-center spending and still face execution or bargaining-power risks. A high-capacity product shift can lift exabytes without equivalent unit growth, while a rise in average selling prices can reflect mix or pricing actions. Compare the company’s actual financial conversion with its own capacity and revenue data rather than assuming that a growing market will lift every supplier’s returns.

What sequence should you use before evaluating a storage stock?

  1. Set the comparison. Choose a geography and time period. Label fiscal and calendar years rather than treating them as equivalent.
  2. Read at least two storage suppliers’ latest filings. Record capacity shipped, units, cloud or data-center revenue, average selling price or mix, gross margin, and customer concentration where disclosed.
  3. Check management’s explanation. Note whether growth came from more units, higher-capacity products, price changes, inventory normalization, or a particular order pattern.
  4. Look for facility corroboration. Compare relevant construction, vacancy, absorption, preleasing, and power conditions, keeping the geography and reporting period attached to each figure.
  5. Map workload exposure. Identify whether each company sells HDDs, flash, storage systems, or broader infrastructure, and consider which workloads its products serve.
  6. Trace operating results. Compare demand indicators with revenue, margin, cash from operations, capital spending, inventory, and working capital.
  7. Write down what remains unknown. Separate observed company results from expectations about future demand, market share, valuation, and whether a stock suits your circumstances.

What can these indicators not tell you?

The measures above do not establish one independent, current global total for storage demand across media and systems. Nor do a supplier’s results, a facility-market report, or management commentary determine future demand, a company’s eventual market share, its valuation, or whether its stock is suitable for an individual investor.

Survey figures require the same care. Seagate’s 2025 company report said 94.5% of surveyed respondents reported increasing data-storage needs and 97% anticipated AI growth would further affect storage demand. These are company-published survey results, not independently verified industry-wide measurements; without the complete methodology and sample details, do not generalize them beyond the survey.

Seagate senior vice president of cloud marketing Jason Feist characterized the infrastructure issue this way: “Data centers are under intense scrutiny – not only because they support modern AI workloads, but because they are becoming one of the most energy-intensive sectors of the digital economy.” This is an executive’s company viewpoint, not a regulator’s or independent research body’s conclusion.
