Yes—you can ask questions about personal documents without uploading them by using a document-chat app with a language model running on your own device. In LM Studio’s documented workflow, document chat (also called retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG) works offline after you download a model. That keeps the document-processing path local, but it does not mean every app feature or configuration is offline.
How local document chat works
A document-chat app extracts or retrieves relevant text from files on your device and supplies that text to a model running on the same device. The model then generates an answer from the retrieved context. The file does not need to be uploaded to a cloud AI service for this workflow.

LM Studio’s documentation says its downloaded models run locally and that document chat/RAG can work offline once the model is on the machine. It states: “When you drag and drop a document into LM Studio to chat with it or perform RAG, that document stays on your machine.” This is a statement about LM Studio’s local workflow, not a guarantee covering other apps or connected features. Set up a local workflow
- Choose an app that explicitly supports local models and local document processing. LM Studio documents a built-in document-chat/RAG workflow. Other options are discussed below.
- Download a model while online. Model downloads require an internet connection; fully offline use becomes possible only after the model is on your device.
- Load the downloaded model locally. Check the selected model and provider in the app before adding private files. A cloud model is a different data path.
- Test with a non-sensitive document. Ask a question with an answer you can verify in the file. Where the app offers retrieved passages or citations, inspect them to see whether the answer is grounded in the right material.
- Review connected features before using sensitive documents. Turn off cloud-model and web-search features if you want the local-only workflow, and check the app’s current settings and privacy information.
- For stricter isolation, test offline. Disconnect from the internet and try the same workflow after the model is downloaded. This can help confirm that the chosen task works without a network connection; it does not establish that local files are protected from other users of the device.
What “not uploading” does—and does not—mean
It means the document can be processed by an on-device model without sending the document to a cloud AI service. It does not automatically mean that the app never connects to the internet. LM Studio’s June 2026 privacy policy says that messages, chat histories, and documents are not transmitted from the system when local models are run; it also identifies model searches and downloads, software update checks, and cloud services as internet-connected events. - Local model: the model runs on your device, rather than on a provider’s remote server.
- Connected features: cloud models, web search, and other integrations can send information outside the local workflow. Review each feature separately.
- Local storage: the model and any document index or related files may be stored on your device. Protect access with your operating-system account and, where appropriate, disk encryption.
- Other apps: one vendor’s privacy statement does not establish how another app, plugin, extension, or connected service handles data.
LM Studio’s offline documentation also distinguishes local use from cloud services such as web search or cloud models. Check which provider and features are active rather than relying on the word “local” alone.

Accuracy, speed, and storage expectations
Local processing does not establish how accurate or fast answers will be on your documents. Results depend on the model, the document, and the retrieval setup. The cited product information does not provide comparable benchmarks or a universal minimum hardware specification, so check the requirements for the specific model and machine rather than assuming cloud-equivalent quality.

The downloaded model and document index use local storage. An external SSD may be useful if you need more room for models and files, but the cited documentation does not make one a requirement; built-in storage may be enough for your collection.

When this approach is a good fit
- You want to query files without sending them to a cloud model.
- You are comfortable installing an app and downloading a model before working offline.
- You can verify important answers against the original document rather than treating AI output as authoritative.
If you need a formal assurance that no information leaves a device, do not infer that guarantee from a local-model label alone. Confirm the exact app configuration and connected components, and test the workflow offline. Local processing also does not replace ordinary device security.
