After it finishes, open and check the returned archive link, then keep that link with its capture date. A Wayback capture and a screenshot are different: the archive may replay page files, while a screenshot is a visual record.
Archive one page with Save Page Now
- Open Save Page Now and enter the complete URL of the webpage, including its scheme (such as
https://). - Submit the URL and wait for the capture result. If the save succeeds, the Wayback Machine provides a permanent URL for that captured page.
- Open the archive URL. Check that the page loads and that important images and other resources are present.
- Save the exact archive URL and capture date. Share that link when you need others to view the saved version.
Save Page Now requests a one-time capture of the single URL entered. It does not save the page’s outlinks or start a crawl of the site. Internet Archive’s help page describes this scope directly: “Please note, this method only saves a single page, not the whole site.” Internet Archive Help Center: Save Pages in the Wayback Machine.

Use the browser extension if you save pages often
The official Wayback Machine browser extension provides a Save Page Now action for the page open in your browser, along with features for finding older or newer captures. It is a convenient alternative to copying a URL into the web form; it has the same single-page scope and capture limitations. The project repository lists distribution links for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari. Check the relevant current store listing for availability and compatibility: Wayback Machine browser extension.
Check what the archive actually preserved
A successful capture does not guarantee a complete replay. Internet Archive says a page is saved with its images and CSS, but resources can be missing, and JavaScript features may rely on the original server. Some images or links in a replay may resolve to live content when the archived copy is unavailable. If historical accuracy matters, inspect the capture date in the archive URL and verify important resources rather than assuming every element or click belongs to that saved capture. - Try opening the archive in a fresh tab and checking key images, styles, and links.
- If an interaction fails, it may depend on JavaScript or a server that is no longer available; a saved page is not guaranteed to preserve working functionality.
- If a resource appears current rather than historical, do not treat it as proof of what the page contained on the capture date.
What to do when a page will not save
Some pages cannot be captured or replayed as expected. Internet Archive identifies access restrictions, robots.txt rules, owner requests, missing resources, and site or SSL settings that interfere with crawling among possible causes. Password-protected or otherwise inaccessible pages may not be available to save. Using The Wayback Machine.
- The page is private or requires sign-in: Save Page Now may not be able to access it. Do not assume the archive has captured content visible only to an authenticated visitor.
- The site excludes crawlers: Robots restrictions or an owner request may prevent a capture. There is no reliable way to make an excluded page available through the ordinary one-time save.
- The capture is incomplete: Check whether images and other resources were archived. Missing files and JavaScript that depends on the original server can affect replay even when a capture exists.
- The request fails: The site may prohibit crawling, or its SSL configuration may interfere. The available help guidance does not establish a universal fix; the site’s access configuration may need to change.
Archive links and screenshots serve different purposes
A Wayback capture is useful when you want a link that can replay a saved webpage and its archived resources where available. A screenshot is a visual file of the page at capture time; it is not a replayable archive and does not preserve the page’s links or interactions. If you need both, keep the Wayback URL and a separate screenshot file.

The current Save Page Now screenshot control could not be confirmed in official documentation. Check the live form if you expect such an option, but do not rely on it being available. For a screenshot, use your browser’s screenshot function and retain the resulting file separately.

When one-page saving is not enough
Save Page Now is not a scheduled preservation service, a multi-page capture, or a whole-site backup. Internet Archive describes Archive-It as a paid subscription service with technical and web-archivist support for institutions that need recurring web crawls. It is an optional route for organizational preservation, not a requirement for an individual page save. See Archive-It.

Citing a Wayback capture
When using an archived page as a source, cite the original webpage in the usual way and add the Wayback capture URL and capture date where relevant. Internet Archive notes that there is no established MLA format specifically for Wayback Machine resources and recommends including more information. Follow the citation style required for your work and make the capture date clear: Internet Archive’s citation guidance.
