Shadow DOM does not require a special PDF setting: its content may render on screen while remaining isolated from ordinary page-level selectors and styles, and print results vary by page and browser. For repeatable capture, Chrome Headless can print to PDF, but you still need to verify that client-rendered content has loaded.
Save the page from your browser

Open the webpage in Firefox and choose Print.

In the destination list, select Save to PDF.

Review the print preview. Check whether the web component content appears, and whether the page count, orientation, margins, and backgrounds suit the archive.

Adjust the print settings as needed, save the PDF, and open the resulting file to confirm the content and pagination.

If component content is missing or badly formatted, try the site’s own print or export feature, if available, or test printing in another browser. There is no universal Shadow DOM repair switch established by the browser documentation.
Why Shadow DOM can complicate an archive
Shadow DOM attaches a component tree to a host element and encapsulates its internals. An open root is ordinarily reachable from page JavaScript through the host’s shadowRoot property; a closed root is not exposed that way. Ordinary document selectors and styles also do not simply cross into a shadow tree. A component can therefore be visible on screen even when broad page-level scripts or CSS cannot reach it.
That distinction concerns access and styling, not a guarantee about PDF output. Shadow DOM documentation explains encapsulation, but does not promise identical printed results across browsers or sites. Check the actual preview and saved file rather than assuming that visible screen content will print correctly. See MDN’s Using shadow DOM.

Chrome’s extension API includes openOrClosedShadowRoot() for extension code. That special API is not a normal webpage capability, nor a reason to inject scripts to bypass a site’s controls: Chrome browser.dom API reference.
Automate PDF capture with Chrome Headless
For repeatable developer capture, Chrome Headless documents the --print-to-pdf option. A basic command is:
chrome --headless --print-to-pdf=page.pdf "https://example.com"Replace chrome with the executable name or path used by your installation, and replace the URL with the page to archive. The command writes a PDF; open it and verify that the expected component content and layout are present.

The Headless command-line reference documents --timeout as a maximum wait before capture. It is not confirmation that a particular page’s scripts, network requests, or client-rendered components have finished. Use the documented command options for your installed Chrome version and inspect the output: Chrome Headless command-line reference.
Check print styling and pagination
A PDF uses the browser’s print pipeline, which can apply print-specific layout rather than reproduce the screen. Print CSS and browser support can affect pagination and appearance. Chrome for Developers discusses paged media and notes that Chrome 131 supports CSS page-margin content in its article published October 30, 2024; that information concerns print layout generally, not a Shadow DOM-specific fix: Add content to the margins of web pages when printed using CSS.
Do not assume that interactive state, animations, video, lazy-loaded content, or all screen styling will be preserved. The right remedy for missing content depends on the site and browser; test the supported print paths available to you.

No source establishes one browser as universally best for printing Shadow DOM content. Choose based on whether you need a one-off file, repeatable automation, or control over the page itself.

The component appears on screen but not in the preview: Try the site’s print/export feature or another browser’s print path. Shadow DOM isolation does not establish a universal print failure or fix.

The PDF omits content that appears after a delay: In Headless capture, do not treat

Pages break awkwardly or backgrounds are missing: Review print preview and adjust orientation, margins, and background settings. Print CSS can differ from screen styling.

Page-level CSS or selectors cannot reach a component: That is consistent with Shadow DOM encapsulation. If you own the page, implement appropriate styles or print behavior inside the component and verify the output.
