To archive a webpage in both formats, open it in a headless browser, wait for the content you need, then save a screenshot and a PDF. Chrome Headless is a direct command-line option; Playwright or Puppeteer is better suited to a repeatable job that needs loops, filenames, or page-specific controls. A screenshot records a visual rendering, while a PDF follows browser print behavior unless you change the media setting.

The two commands launch separate captures. A page can change between them; if identical page state matters, use a browser automation script to navigate once and save both outputs in the same run. The timeout only caps the wait: Chrome can capture while the page is still loading. Do not treat it as confirmation that scripts, images, or embedded content have settled.

networkidle is a practical general wait condition, not a guarantee that every site has finished its own delayed work. If a page loads important content after a user action or a known event, adapt the script to wait for that page-specific condition before saving. For example, Playwright supports waiting for a selector; avoid using a fixed delay as a substitute for identifying the content you need.
Control PDF appearance and screenshot extent
Screenshot: viewport, full page, or element
A default screenshot captures the current viewport. Use Playwright’s fullPage: true option when the complete scrollable page matters. For a focused record, select the relevant element and capture that element instead. Full-page capture can produce a very tall image, so use it when the page’s full layout is useful rather than simply because the option exists.

PDF: print styling or screen styling
Puppeteer documents that page.pdf() uses print CSS by default. Print styles can hide navigation or alter colors and layout, which may be appropriate for a document but differ from what a visitor sees onscreen. If screen media is the goal, emulate it before PDF generation:

Make the archive usable later
Use consistent filenames so the screenshot and PDF stay paired. A practical convention is a capture date, a sanitized page title, and an extension, such as 2026-10-04-example-com.png and 2026-10-04-example-com.pdf. Record the source URL and capture time alongside the files; that is an editorial workflow recommendation, not an archival standard established by the browser documentation.
These files preserve a visual rendering and a print-oriented document, not every underlying website resource or behavior. If you retain many captures, store and back up both files together with their provenance details.
Troubleshooting
- The page looks incomplete: The capture may have happened before client-side content finished loading. A timeout is only a maximum wait, and a network-idle condition is not proof every delayed widget has appeared. Wait for the specific content or selector needed before capture.
- The screenshot shows only the top of the page: The default target is the viewport. Set full-page capture explicitly, or capture the specific element required.
- The PDF looks unlike the browser page: PDF generation applies print CSS by default in Puppeteer. Emulate screen media before generating a screen-style PDF, and inspect the output for pagination and color differences.
- Background colors are missing in the PDF: Set
printBackground: truein the page PDF options. - The CLI command cannot find Chrome: Use the executable name or full path installed on your system. For Playwright, install the browser binary with
npx playwright install chromium. - A command times out or captures a page still loading: Increase the maximum wait if appropriate, but also add a meaningful readiness condition in an automation library when the page needs more than a fixed wait.
