Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo archive a webpage as a PDF and check whether that saved file later changes, print the page to PDF, calculate a SHA-256 digest of the PDF, and keep the full digest with the file and capture details. A matching digest on a later check means the compared PDF bytes match the original reference; it does not prove who published the page, when it existed, or whether its contents were true.
What a PDF and checksum preserve
A browser-generated PDF is a readable, fixed rendition of a page at the time you print it. It is not a complete copy of the website: it may omit linked files, scripts, dynamic content, and interactive behavior. The Library of Congress recommends web-preservation formats and site designs that support crawlers; it notes that available tools cannot capture every kind of content. See its web archives recommendations and guidance for creating preservable websites.

SHA-256 identifies the bytes of the particular PDF you hashed. NIST describes hash digests as a way to detect whether data has changed since the digest was generated (FIPS 180-4, Secure Hash Standard). Editing, optimizing, or re-saving a PDF can change its bytes—and therefore its digest—even if the page still looks the same.
A checksum is not a digital signature or trusted timestamp. It cannot independently establish the PDF’s author, capture time, source webpage, or truthfulness. Its value for later checking depends on keeping the original digest trustworthy and unchanged.

Save the webpage as a PDF in Chrome
- Open the intended page. Wait for the content you want to preserve to appear. Record the full page URL and the capture date and time, including timezone, in a note kept with the PDF.
- Open Print. In Chrome desktop, press Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+P on Mac. Chrome’s Print from Chrome help describes the print-preview workflow; labels and interface details can vary by system and version.
- Choose Save as PDF. In the destination options, select Save as PDF. Review the page range, orientation, scale, margins, headers and footers, and background graphics according to what you need to preserve.
- Save and inspect the result. Open the PDF and check that the expected material appears and that pagination, images, and text are usable. If the page is incomplete or laid out poorly, adjust print settings and save a new copy before calculating its checksum.
Calculate and retain the SHA-256 digest
Use a trusted checksum utility available on your computer to calculate SHA-256 for the saved PDF—not for the live URL. The referenced documentation establishes what SHA-256 is and how Chrome saves a PDF, but does not specify platform-specific checksum commands, so this guide does not provide unverified commands.
- Calculate the PDF’s SHA-256 digest using your chosen local utility.
- Copy the entire digest exactly into a text record alongside the PDF. Include the filename, source URL, capture date and time with timezone, and—if useful for later interpretation—the browser and print settings.
- When checking the archive later, calculate SHA-256 over the same file and compare the complete digest with the retained original. A match indicates the bytes match that reference digest; a mismatch means the file bytes differ, so investigate whether it was changed or whether you are comparing a different file.
If your goal includes tamper evidence, do not rely only on a digest stored beside the PDF if both could be silently modified together. Keep the reference digest in a separately controlled record. The Library of Congress recommends that web archives identify the institution and capture date and time; preserving the URL and timestamp gives readers context for what the PDF represents (Web Archiving FAQ).

When a PDF is not enough: WARC and WACZ
For preservation of a website rather than a convenient page rendition, use a web-capture workflow that can collect multiple resources and capture metadata. The Library of Congress describes WARC as “a method for combining multiple digital resources into an aggregate archival file together with related information” (WARC format description). A WARC capture can provide broader context than a PDF, but does not guarantee perfect replay or capture every type of material, including some streaming, deep-web, database, or otherwise unsupported content.

The Library of Congress format description says its Data Package manifest can include SHA-256 or MD5 checks for each file in the package (WACZ format description). That package-level workflow is broader than hashing one exported PDF; neither a manifest nor a PDF checksum by itself proves authorship or capture time.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The PDF is missing content: confirm the page had finished loading and the desired content was visible before printing. Some dynamic or interactive content may not be represented in print output; a PDF is a rendition, not a full website capture.
- Pagination or appearance is poor: reopen Chrome’s print preview and review page range, orientation, scale, margins, headers and footers, and background graphics. Inspect the newly saved PDF before hashing it.
- The later checksum differs: confirm you selected the exact archived file and used SHA-256 both times. If the PDF was edited, optimized, or re-saved after the original digest, a changed digest is expected because the bytes may differ.
- The checksum matches but you need proof of provenance: a matching digest only compares bytes to a reference. It does not establish who created the file or when; preserve capture context and use a separately controlled digest record.
- You need the site’s resources or replay, not just a readable page: use a WARC-capable capture workflow and retain its metadata. Some web content may still be uncapturable or unavailable for replay.

ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents, with tools including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. This API-created PDF still needs its own SHA-256 digest if you want to check its bytes later.
Example cURL request, saving a PDF of the target URL (change url to the page you want to capture):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -d format=pdf -o page.pdf
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API parameters and setup. ScreenshotNeo offers 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.

Keep the archive interpretable
For a useful record, keep the PDF, full SHA-256 digest, original URL, capture time with timezone, and a note of the capture method together. This lets a later reader understand what was saved and check whether the saved file’s bytes still match the retained reference, without mistaking that integrity check for proof of authenticity or a complete website archive.
