For a dependable archive of your own 24/7 sleep sounds stream, record it locally while it is live. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you also want YouTube replays, plan separate broadcasts that end before the 12-hour mark, and keep the local recordings as your master copies. YouTube Help: Archive live streams
Choose the archive you need
A continuous broadcast, a YouTube replay, and a local recording are different things. A local recording gives you a copy under your control; YouTube’s automatic archive is a convenient replay but is not dependable for a single stream that runs beyond 12 hours. Viewer DVR controls are for navigating during a live broadcast, not preserving a complete recording.
| Route | What it provides | Limitation | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube automatic live archive | A replay associated with the broadcast | YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. | Shorter replay segments, backed up locally |
| Local recording during the stream | A creator-controlled copy that does not depend on the YouTube replay becoming available | Requires a working recording setup and enough local storage. | Primary preservation copy for a continuous stream |
| YouTube Studio creator download | A way for a signed-in creator to retrieve their uploaded video | YouTube documents an MP4 download at 720p or 360p depending on video size; it is not a download route for other users’ videos. | Secondary retrieval when the local original is unavailable |

Set up a local recording
1. Choose and check the storage destination
Save the recording to a local disk with enough free space for the planned duration and how long you intend to retain it. If the archive matters, plan a second physical drive or other separate storage for a backup copy. Required space depends on the recording’s actual encoding settings; there is no defensible universal per-hour figure for this use case. Estimate using your configured recording settings and check free space while the broadcast runs.

2. Configure your capture application
In OBS, configure local recording as well as streaming. OBS’s official help recommends Simple output mode and recording presets as a starting point, and a hardware encoder if one is available. The right settings depend on your system and source; avoid assuming a preset will work reliably for a long unattended session. Make a short test recording and play the saved file before relying on the setup. See the OBS Help Portal.
3. Start the recording and broadcast
Start local recording and then begin the YouTube broadcast using your usual workflow. Confirm OBS shows recording in progress and that the file is being written to the intended disk. Monitor remaining space and stream health. OBS notes that rising dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate.

Plan YouTube replays around the 12-hour limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If separate YouTube replays matter, end the broadcast before it reaches 12 hours, allow the replay to process, and start a new broadcast. This is a practical way to create shorter replay units based on YouTube’s stated threshold, not a guarantee that every broadcast or account will produce a replay.
- Start the local recording and the first YouTube broadcast.
- Before the broadcast reaches 12 hours, end it and verify that the local file is intact.
- Allow YouTube time to process the completed broadcast. A completed broadcast is converted into a YouTube video, but it is not available immediately; processing delay relates to the broadcast’s actual length. See the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.
- Start the next broadcast and local recording. Keep one local capture running across the transition only if your setup supports that safely; otherwise create sequential files and verify both sides of the handoff.
Understand DVR versus an archive
DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume during a live broadcast. It is not a substitute for a saved replay: on very long streams it may be limited or unavailable, and viewers cannot seek to a point before the broadcast began. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Verify and preserve the files
- After each recording segment, open the file and check that its picture and sound play through the expected duration.
- Keep the local recording as the master copy and copy it to separate storage if you need an additional backup.
- YouTube Studio’s creator download can serve as a secondary retrieval option for a video uploaded by the signed-in channel owner. Its documented MP4 is 720p or 360p depending on video size, so do not assume it matches the original local recording.
Use sleep sounds you have the right to broadcast
This workflow is for preserving your own stream. Use sleep-sounds audio you own or are licensed to use. YouTube’s creator download instructions do not establish permission to copy another person’s stream; the documented workflow is for videos uploaded by the signed-in creator and does not provide a way to download other users’ videos. No YouTube replay appears
If the broadcast ran longer than 12 hours, YouTube says it may not have been captured. Use the local recording if available; for future replay segments, end broadcasts before the threshold and allow time for processing.

The local recording stops or is incomplete
Check whether the disk ran out of space, the recording application stopped, or the computer or storage became unavailable. Confirm the destination and free space before the next broadcast, then make and play a short test recording. For a long archive, consider sequential local files and verify each one rather than depending on a single uninterrupted file.
The stream has dropped frames
OBS says rising dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a connection unable to sustain the configured bitrate. Check stream health and the network before continuing to rely on the setup; a local recording can preserve the captured source even if the live connection has problems.

The YouTube replay is still processing
A completed broadcast is converted into a video, and the API documentation says it is not available immediately. Processing delay is related to the broadcast’s actual length. Keep the local copy while you wait.
