Then check whether you owe the SEVIS I-901 fee, complete the DS-160, follow the U.S. embassy or consulate’s local appointment and payment instructions, and bring the required documents to your interview. The local post’s directions control: appointment order, payment methods, photo rules, possible interview exceptions, and extra documents can vary.
Apply early because interview availability varies by location, season, and visa category. A consular officer decides whether you qualify; completing the steps or bringing particular evidence does not guarantee that a visa will be issued.

Start with program acceptance and Form DS-2019
A J-1 visa application begins with a place in a qualifying U.S. exchange visitor program, not with the visa form. Apply through an organization authorized to sponsor the program. If you are accepted, the sponsor registers you in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and provides Form DS-2019, the Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status.
You need the DS-2019 to apply for the visa. Check that the personal and program information on it is accurate and keep it available while completing the DS-160. The form includes details—such as the SEVIS ID and program address—that J applicants need for that application. If information appears incorrect or your plans change, contact the sponsor rather than guessing or altering sponsor-issued information yourself.

If your category is J-1 Intern or Trainee, you also need Form DS-7002, the training or internship placement plan. Other J-1 categories do not have this additional document requirement in the State Department’s general J-visa checklist.
The sponsor is central to this first stage: it provides the program record you will use in the visa application and can clarify program-specific questions, fee exceptions, and whether a category permits dependents. Keep its contact information available. Do not try to start a J-1 application using a guessed SEVIS number or a program description in place of the sponsor-issued form.
Check whether the SEVIS I-901 fee applies
After your sponsor tells you your SEVIS registration is active, check whether you must pay the I-901 SEVIS fee. Some applicants are exempt, and the U.S. Department of State directs exchange visitors to ask their program sponsor about exceptions. The amount is not stated here because the current fee was not verified in the source information for this guide; confirm it through the official SEVIS fee service and your sponsor before paying.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep any payment confirmation or exemption information with your application records. Do not confuse the SEVIS fee with the visa application processing fee: they are separate charges with different rules. Whether you owe either charge depends on your circumstances and the applicable instructions.
Check that the SEVIS information you enter later matches the DS-2019. A fee payment, if required, is not the visa application itself and does not replace the DS-160, appointment, or interview. If you are unsure whether an exemption applies, ask your sponsor before paying rather than assuming that another applicant’s situation is the same as yours.
Complete the DS-160 accurately
Submit the Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application, Form DS-160, through the official application system. Have your passport, travel history, education and work information, and DS-2019 at hand so you can answer from your records. J applicants need the SEVIS ID and program address shown on the DS-2019.
Use the right language and check each answer
Answer the questions in English using English characters. The stated exception is your full name, which may also be entered in its native alphabet. Read each response before submitting and make sure the information is complete and consistent with your program paperwork. The State Department cautions that an incomplete or incorrect DS-160 can require correction and rescheduling of the visa interview.

As the State Department’s DS-160 FAQ puts it: “Take care to answer all questions on the DS-160 accurately and completely; otherwise, you may have to correct your application and reschedule your visa interview appointment.” Set aside enough time to complete the form carefully. If you need to check a date or a program detail, use your records or ask the sponsor rather than entering a guess.
Save the confirmation page
After submitting, save or print the DS-160 confirmation page with its barcode. You generally do not need to print the entire DS-160 application. The confirmation page is one of the documents in the general interview checklist, so make sure the barcode is legible and accessible on interview day.
Keep a copy of the information you submitted for your own reference, but distinguish that copy from the confirmation page the post asks you to bring. If a detail needs correction after submission, follow the relevant post’s instructions; a correction may affect the appointment and could mean rescheduling.
Use the applying embassy or consulate’s appointment process
Follow the instructions of the U.S. embassy or consulate where you will apply. The Department of State generally recommends applying in the country where you live. The specific post determines how to schedule an interview, when and how to pay applicable fees, which photo format to use, what additional documents to bring, and whether any interview exception is available.
Do not assume the appointment sequence or payment process used in one country applies at another post. Check the applying post’s current instructions before booking an appointment or making a payment, and check them again near the interview in case requirements have changed. Most visa applicants generally need an interview. Limited exceptions may exist, but an officer can require an interview even when an applicant might otherwise qualify for an exception.
Apply as early as your program plans allow. Interview wait times differ by location, season, and visa category, and there is no single processing-time estimate that applies to every applicant. The State Department advises applicants to check wait times and make plans accordingly; do not treat an appointment estimate as a promise of when a visa will be issued.
Use the instructions for the post where you will actually apply, not a checklist copied from another country or a friend’s earlier application. Local directions govern such practical details as whether a fee must be paid before scheduling, how the post accepts payment, whether an interview waiver process is available, and which items it wants applicants to bring. The general State Department list is a starting point, not a substitute for those directions.

| Document | Who needs it and what to check |
|---|---|
| Passport | All applicants. It must be valid for travel and generally valid for at least six months beyond the intended period of stay, unless a country agreement provides an exception. |
| DS-160 confirmation page | All applicants. Bring the confirmation page with its barcode; the complete application need not be printed. |
| Visa application fee receipt | Bring it if the fee is required before the interview under the applying post’s instructions. |
| Photo in the required format | All applicants should follow the applying post’s current photo rules. The required format is not universal across posts. |
| Form DS-2019 | All J-1 applicants. This sponsor-issued form contains the program and SEVIS information used in the application. |
| Form DS-7002 | J-1 Intern and Trainee applicants. It is an additional document for these categories. |
Read the Legal Rights and Protections pamphlet before applying, as the State Department instructs. Keep your documents organized so you can present the item requested without delay. The post may specify additional documents, so the general list is not a substitute for its local checklist.
Before leaving for the appointment, confirm that you have the right passport and that the DS-160 barcode and sponsor forms are accessible. If the post says to bring a fee receipt, make sure you have it; if its instructions say payment occurs at a different stage, follow that process. Do not assume that every applicant must bring identical photo or payment evidence regardless of location.
Prepare evidence that fits your circumstances
A consular officer interviews applicants to determine whether they qualify under U.S. law. Depending on the case, the post may ask for additional information about the exchange’s purpose, plans to depart after the program, ability to pay travel costs, or other relevant matters. Supporting evidence should answer the particular concern, rather than simply add paperwork.
- Program purpose: Be able to explain the exchange activity and how your plans relate to the information in your DS-2019 and, if applicable, DS-7002.
- Costs and funding: Know who will pay program-related and travel costs. If another person or organization will provide support, be ready to explain that arrangement and show relevant evidence if requested.
- Plans after the exchange: Be prepared to describe what you expect to do after the program and why you intend to depart the United States at its end. Employment or family ties may help document purpose and return intent, but the officer evaluates the full circumstances.
- Consistency: Compare your DS-160 answers with your sponsor documents and supporting records. Resolve discrepancies before the interview where possible; do not improvise an explanation that conflicts with the paperwork.
These are preparation areas, not a guaranteed question list. Applicants have different programs and circumstances, and no particular document or answer guarantees approval.
Bring relevant supporting material if the post requests it or if it helps explain an issue the officer may consider. For example, if a person or organization will pay costs, be prepared to identify the source of support and provide evidence of that arrangement if asked. If discussing employment or family connections as part of your plans after the program, explain them truthfully and in context. The official guidance identifies these as possible evidence areas; it does not require every applicant to produce the same bundle of documents.
Prepare for the interview without memorizing a script
Review your DS-160 and DS-2019 before the appointment so you can describe your own plans clearly and accurately. Understand your exchange program’s purpose and planned activities, know how its costs will be covered, and be ready to explain what you plan to do when the exchange ends. Answer the question asked, keep answers truthful, and ask for clarification if you do not understand a question.

Do not try to recite a universal script: the State Department does not publish one set of questions that every J-1 applicant will be asked. The interview is part of an individual eligibility determination. Even a complete application and a well-prepared interview cannot ensure that a visa will be issued; the Department states, “There is no guarantee that you will be issued a visa.”
A useful preparation check is to compare the core facts across your forms: your program and sponsor information, the SEVIS details, the planned exchange activity, and who is covering costs. Make sure you can explain your own plans in ordinary language rather than memorized phrases. If you discover a mismatch or do not understand a program detail, contact the sponsor before the appointment. Preparation means being familiar with your application, not rehearsing an answer you think an officer wants to hear.

Understand the fees before paying
Fees depend on the type of charge and, for some charges, the applicant’s program or nationality. The State Department’s 2026 fee schedule lists a $185 non-petition-based nonimmigrant visa application processing fee, which generally includes J visas. This is not a universal amount: the Department lists no application fee for applicants participating in qualifying official U.S. government-sponsored educational and cultural exchanges.
| Charge | What the available rules establish |
|---|---|
| Visa application processing fee | The State Department’s 2026 general fee is $185 for non-petition-based nonimmigrant visa applications, including J visas in general. Qualifying official U.S. government-sponsored exchange visitors are listed as exempt from the application fee. |
| Issuance fee | May depend on nationality and reciprocity. Qualifying government-sponsored applicants described by the Department, and their dependents, are exempt from applicable issuance fees. |
| SEVIS I-901 fee | Separate from the visa application processing fee. The current amount is not stated here; verify it through the official SEVIS fee service and with the program sponsor. Some applicants are not required to pay. |
For the government-sponsored exemption described on the State Department’s J-1 guidance page, the DS-2019 program serial number must begin with G-1, G-2, G-3, or G-7. Confirm that your program qualifies and check the applying post’s current payment directions before assuming a fee is waived or paying. Fees and payment rules can change.
The $185 amount is the general application processing fee listed by the Department of State for 2026, not a total estimate of every expense an applicant might face. It does not include the separate SEVIS fee where that fee applies, and it should not be treated as the amount every applicant must pay. A qualifying government-sponsored exchange can have a different fee outcome, and nationality can affect an issuance fee. Verify the fees that apply to your case and the post’s payment procedure before making a payment.

Intern and Trainee applicants
J-1 Intern and Trainee applicants need both the DS-2019 and the additional DS-7002. Check that you have the sponsor-issued placement plan as well as the general J-1 documents before attending the interview.
Qualifying government-sponsored exchange visitors
Applicants in the qualifying official U.S. government-sponsored exchanges described by the State Department may be exempt from the application fee and applicable issuance fees. The Department identifies DS-2019 program serial numbers beginning G-1, G-2, G-3, or G-7 for this exemption. Do not infer eligibility solely from a program’s description; confirm the serial number and exemption with the sponsor and follow the post’s directions.
Spouses and children
J-2 eligibility depends on the principal applicant’s program category. An eligible spouse and unmarried children under 21 need separate DS-2019 forms from the sponsor and separate visa applications. They do not pay an additional SEVIS fee, according to the State Department’s guidance. Ask the sponsor whether the category permits J-2 dependents and obtain their individual forms before they apply.
Dependents should not assume that the principal applicant’s DS-2019 or visa application covers them. Each eligible family member needs an individual DS-2019 and a separate visa application. They should check the applying post’s instructions for their own application and appointments. The fact that they do not pay an additional SEVIS fee does not remove those separate-document and application steps.
Keep the visa application separate from travel and status decisions
A J-1 visa is part of the process for seeking entry to the United States; it is not a guarantee that the visa will be issued or that every later immigration question is settled. The interview officer makes the visa eligibility decision. Avoid buying tickets or making final travel plans until the visa has been issued, and do not treat a scheduled interview or pending application as permission to travel.
If a post asks for additional documents or further action, follow the instructions it gives you. The required next steps and any timing depend on the individual case and the post; this general guide cannot establish them in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do first to apply for a J-1 visa?
Apply to a qualifying exchange visitor program through an authorized U.S. sponsor. If accepted, the sponsor registers you in SEVIS and issues Form DS-2019, which you need for the visa application.
Do all J-1 applicants need Form DS-7002?
No. The State Department’s general checklist additionally requires DS-7002 for J-1 Intern and Trainee applicants. Other J-1 categories do not have that additional document requirement in the general checklist.
How much is the J-1 visa application fee?
The Department of State’s 2026 schedule lists $185 as the general non-petition-based nonimmigrant visa application processing fee, which generally includes J visas. Qualifying official U.S. government-sponsored exchange visitors may be exempt. Issuance fees can depend on nationality and reciprocity, and the separate I-901 SEVIS fee may apply; verify current charges and payment instructions with the sponsor and applying post.

Some applicants are not required to pay. Ask your program sponsor whether an exception applies and verify the current amount through the official SEVIS fee service. The SEVIS fee is separate from the visa application processing fee.
Can I apply for a J-1 visa in a country where I do not live?
The Department of State generally recommends applying in the country where you live. Appointment procedures, fee payment, supplemental documents, and wait times vary by post, so check the instructions of the embassy or consulate where you intend to apply.
What documents should I bring to a J-1 visa interview?
The general checklist includes a travel-valid passport, DS-160 confirmation page, fee receipt if required before the interview, photo in the applying post’s required format, and Form DS-2019. Intern and Trainee applicants also need DS-7002. Follow the local post’s directions for any additional documents.
What should I say in a J-1 visa interview?
There is no universal script or guaranteed question list. Review your DS-160 and DS-2019, understand your program activities and funding, and be ready to describe your plans after the exchange. Answer truthfully and consistently with your documents; an officer decides eligibility and approval is not guaranteed.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Can my spouse or children apply with me?
J-2 eligibility depends on the principal applicant’s program category. An eligible spouse and unmarried children under 21 need their own DS-2019 forms from the sponsor and separate visa applications. They do not pay an additional SEVIS fee.
Should I buy plane tickets before my J-1 visa is issued?
Avoid buying tickets or making final travel plans until the visa has been issued. An appointment or pending application is not a visa, and issuance is not guaranteed.
The Bottom Line
The sequence is program acceptance and sponsor-issued DS-2019, SEVIS fee check, DS-160, then the applying post’s appointment and interview process. Use the local post’s current instructions for payment, photos, interviews, and additional documents; prepare to explain your program, funding, and plans after the exchange. Fees and eligibility vary, and a completed application does not guarantee issuance, so apply early and wait for the visa before making final travel plans.
