If YouTube has already applied a copyright strike to your live stream, there is no general appeal route that avoids a counter notification. Your non-counter-notification options are to ask the claimant to retract the copyright removal request or, if you qualify, complete Copyright School and wait 90 days for the strike to expire. If the removal is only scheduled and the strike is not yet active, you may have a seven-day window to act.
First, check whether the strike is active or the removal is scheduled
Open the notice and YouTube Studio and confirm the status of the affected stream. A scheduled copyright removal request is not the same as an applied strike, and the available actions differ.

- Active strike: The copyright removal has taken effect. You can ask the claimant to retract the request or, if eligible, complete Copyright School and wait for expiration. YouTube’s guidance does not offer a general non-counter-notification appeal for an already-applied strike.
- Scheduled removal: YouTube says there is a seven-day period before removal and a strike. Check the notice promptly; during this window, YouTube lists deleting the content before the deadline or seeking a retraction as possible ways to avoid the strike.
Do not assume a counter notification can be filed during the scheduled period: YouTube says that option becomes available only after removal takes effect and the strike is applied. Once a strike is active, deleting the video generally does not clear it. YouTube’s copyright-strike guidance explains the distinction.
If the copyright strike is already active
Ask the claimant to retract the removal request
- In YouTube Studio, find the affected video under Active copyright strikes.
- Review the claimant contact information shown for the removal.
- Contact the claimant and ask them to retract the copyright removal request. Explain clearly which stream and removal you mean, and keep a copy of your message and any reply.
The claimant—not YouTube—decides whether to retract. YouTube says it does not mediate copyright ownership disputes. A retraction of the removal request can clear the associated strike and restore the removed content, unless other videos are tied to it; it will not restore content you deleted yourself. YouTube distinguishes retracting the copyright removal request from retracting only a strike, so be precise about the action you are requesting. See its retraction instructions.

Complete Copyright School and wait, if eligible
YouTube says a strike expires after 90 days if you complete Copyright School and have fewer than three copyright strikes. This clears an eligible strike when it expires; it does not reinstate the removed live stream. YouTube says a channel with three copyright strikes in 90 days is subject to termination. Check your channel’s current status and follow the Copyright School instructions shown in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s strike guidance describes the expiration condition.
If YouTube says the removal is scheduled
Use the seven-day pre-strike period carefully. Confirm in the notice and YouTube Studio that the takedown is still pending, then act before the deadline shown for your case.

- If you want to avoid the strike and are willing to remove the stream, YouTube lists deleting the content before the window expires as an option.
- You can ask the claimant to retract the scheduled removal request. The claimant controls whether to agree.
- Do not rely on deleting the video after the strike is applied to resolve the strike; YouTube says that generally does not work.
Keep the notice and your communications. The timing and status shown on your own account matter; do not treat the seven-day period as a new appeal period after a strike is active. See YouTube’s instructions for copyright removals and strikes.
Do not confuse a copyright strike with other YouTube actions
A copyright strike follows a copyright removal request that results in content being removed. YouTube says an active live stream removed for copyright results in a copyright strike and a seven-day restriction on the channel’s live-streaming access. Understand copyright strikes.

- Community Guidelines strike: This is based on a different policy process. A Community Guidelines appeal is not the route for a copyright removal. See YouTube’s Community Guidelines appeal guidance.
Using the wrong appeal workflow will not address an already-applied copyright strike.
What “without a counter notification” means
A counter notification is a legal request to reinstate content removed after a copyright removal request—not a standard appeal form. YouTube describes it for cases where the uploader believes the removal was a mistake or misidentification, including a possible copyright exception such as fair use, fair dealing, or public domain. The process requires contact information, an explanation to the claimant, and direct links to the removed material. If YouTube forwards a valid counter notification, the claimant has 10 US business days to provide evidence of legal action or the content may be reinstated. Keep records and get qualified help when needed
Save the removal notice, the stream details, and copies of messages to or from the claimant. YouTube recommends keeping records in its copyright-removal tips. If the dispute is complex or you are concerned about disclosing personal information, YouTube says legal help may be useful. YouTube does not decide ownership disputes, and no outcome can be predicted from the strike notice alone.
