Answering phone calls hands-free with AirPods is usually automatic—when your AirPods are connected and the call is routed to them. When it isn’t, you need the exact button/gesture for your model and the right iOS/macOS settings.
This guide covers every modern AirPods generation (and AirPods Max) with step-by-step instructions for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. You’ll also find troubleshooting for the most common failure points: calls coming to speakers, controls not working, and audio/mic problems.

Why answering with AirPods matters
Using AirPods for calls reduces interruptions and keeps your hands free. It’s also more consistent for multi-device setups (for example, switching from iPhone to Mac) when your Apple devices are configured correctly.

Before you start: what needs to be true
- Your AirPods must be charged and paired with your iPhone/iPad/Mac.
- Bluetooth needs to be enabled on the device receiving the call.
- For the best results, update to a recent iOS, iPadOS, or macOS version (examples: iOS 17/18, macOS Sonoma/Sequoia). If you’re on older system software, some call-routing behaviors may differ.
- Know your AirPods model’s call gesture (varies by generation).
Answer a call using AirPods controls (by generation)
When a call comes in, you’ll typically hear a ring and see a call notification on your Apple device. You can answer from the AirPods directly using the model-specific gesture below.
AirPods (1st generation) and AirPods (2nd generation)
Use the double-tap gesture. For the call to answer reliably, the AirPods controls must be set to handle calls on your device.
Action: Double-tap either AirPod to answer an incoming call.
AirPods (3rd generation)
Use the press gesture on the stem. AirPods (3rd gen) are designed to mirror the “press once” behavior used by newer models.
Action: Press the stem once on either AirPod to answer an incoming call.

AirPods Pro (1st generation) and AirPods Pro (2nd generation)
Use the squeeze gesture. This is the hallmark of the Pro line.
Action: Squeeze the force sensor on either AirPod Pro to answer an incoming call.
AirPods Max
Use the Digital Crown or the earcup controls depending on how you have your headphones configured.
Action: Press the noise control button to manage call states and use the on-headset controls for answering when prompted. If you don’t get a call response, use the paired iPhone call controls first to confirm routing, then check Bluetooth and macOS/iOS headphone settings.
Answer a call using your iPhone, iPad, or Mac
If the AirPods gesture doesn’t work (for example, controls got remapped or the call isn’t routed), you can still answer from your Apple device. Once answered, your call audio usually shifts to AirPods automatically if they’re connected and selected.

iPhone and iPad
- When your iPhone/iPad rings, open the incoming call screen.
- Tap Accept (or the green phone icon).
- If audio doesn’t go to AirPods, tap the Audio button on the call screen, then choose your AirPods.
Mac
- When the call banner appears on your Mac, click Answer.
- If you don’t hear the call in AirPods, click the Audio option (or use the call controls) and select your AirPods.
Route calls to AirPods (settings you may need)
Answering controls are only half the story. Your device must route “Phone Calls” audio to AirPods, and your AirPods controls must be set to perform call actions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Confirm your AirPods are connected
- Open Settings on your iPhone/iPad.
- Tap Bluetooth.
- Find your AirPods and confirm they show Connected.
On a Mac, check the menu bar Bluetooth icon and ensure AirPods are connected, or go to System Settings → Bluetooth.
Choose which microphone to use for calls
If you’re having mic problems (people say you sound distant), confirm your microphone selection.
- Go to Settings → Bluetooth.
- Select your AirPods from the device list.
- Find the Microphone setting and pick the option you want (for most users, Automatic is best).
Set default actions for AirPods controls
If double-tap (AirPods 1/2) or squeeze/press (AirPods Pro/3) isn’t answering, your control mapping may be changed.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth.
- Tap the info (i) button next to your AirPods.
- Look for control options such as Double-Tap or Press and Hold / Press the stem.
- Set the relevant control to a call-compatible action (for example, Play/Pause for media is fine, but you want call handling to be enabled where available).
Exact labels differ slightly across iOS versions and AirPods models, but you’re looking for the gesture that handles calls or doesn’t interfere with them.

Using Siri to answer calls
If your hands are full, Siri can help. You can answer by voice on supported iOS/iPadOS/macOS setups.
- Say: Hey Siri, answer the call.
- If Siri doesn’t respond, make sure Siri is enabled in Settings and that your microphone permission is correct.
If you use multiple devices, confirm Siri is active on the same device that’s receiving the call.
When you can’t hear the call (or AirPods won’t answer)
Most call failures come from routing, control mapping, or Bluetooth audio hiccups. Work through these in order.
AirPods connected but calls still come through iPhone or speakers
- While a call is ringing, open the call screen and tap Audio, then choose AirPods.
- Confirm in Settings → Bluetooth that AirPods are Connected.
- Toggle Bluetooth off and back on (iPhone/iPad: Settings → Bluetooth).
- Re-select AirPods from the Bluetooth device list.
- Restart the iPhone/iPad and re-pair if needed.
Double-press/squeeze doesn’t answer
- Try answering directly from the iPhone call screen once to confirm the call is actually reachable.
- Check gesture mapping: Settings → Bluetooth → your AirPods → control settings.
- Make sure you’re using the correct gesture for your model (double-tap vs press vs squeeze).
- Ensure AirPods are worn/detected properly. For AirPods Pro, moisture or ear tip issues can also affect sensor reliability.
- Reset the AirPods pairing if the problem persists (hold the case button for re-pairing on AirPods with a case).
No sound in one or both AirPods
- Increase volume on the iPhone and also on any connected device volume control.
- Check if only one AirPod is working; clean the speaker mesh and mic openings gently with a dry, soft brush.
- Re-seat the AirPods and confirm connection state in Bluetooth.
- For AirPods Pro, make sure the ear tips are properly seated and form a seal.
- Try another call or music playback to validate general audio before troubleshooting call routing.
Call quality issues (mic clipping, echo, low volume)
- Move away from wind or a fan and test again.
- Check microphone selection: Settings → Bluetooth → AirPods → Microphone.
- If you’re on a call with another device nearby (for example, an iPad on the same Apple ID), confirm which device is actually connected to AirPods.
- Restart Bluetooth and re-select AirPods during the call if audio routing becomes unstable.
Putting calls on hold, ending calls, and switching to speaker
Once you know the answer gesture, you’ll want to control the rest of the call. Some actions are gesture-based; others are on-screen, depending on device and OS version.
Answer vs. end vs. reject
Use the incoming call screen on your iPhone/Mac for consistent behavior, especially for rejecting or ending calls. On-AirPods controls can work for ending depending on your model and settings, but the call screen is the most reliable fallback.

Frequently asked questions
Can I answer calls if my AirPods are in the case?
No. AirPods need to be out of the case and connected to your device for the on-ear gestures to work. Put them back in, take them out, then answer from the call screen if needed.
Why does the call not come to AirPods even though they’re connected?
Connection alone doesn’t always guarantee call routing. During an active call, use the Audio button to select AirPods, then check Bluetooth connection state in Settings.
Do AirPods work the same way with iPhone and Mac?
Yes for answering gestures, but routing depends on your device handoff and audio settings. If calls land on the wrong device, answer from the call banner and manually select AirPods under Audio.
What if I accidentally change the double-tap or press controls?
Go to Settings → Bluetooth → your AirPods → the control settings for your model, then restore the behavior you want. Use the iPhone call screen as your safety fallback while you adjust.
Is there a way to answer without touching my AirPods?
Yes. You can answer from your iPhone, iPad, or Mac call screen, or use Siri with a voice command like answer the call (if Siri is enabled).
Bottom Line
To answer phone calls with AirPods reliably, match the gesture to your model—double-tap for AirPods (1st/2nd gen), press the stem for AirPods (3rd gen), and squeeze for AirPods Pro. If anything feels off, answer from your iPhone/Mac call screen and use the Audio button to route sound back to AirPods.
With Bluetooth connected, microphone settings correct, and your control mapping verified, call answering becomes fast and consistent across iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
